Inland Sea with Overnight Camping

Alumnar
By Alumnar

Hi everybody!

I thought that creating a topic with a more appealing title for the non-walkers would be a good idea!

We are planning a trip to the Inland Sea with overnight stay on Eid Al-Adha (exact date not set yet). Drive there (along the Sealine or not, whatever is arranged throughout the development of this topic), BBQ's, dunebashing (or not), overnight stay with campfire.

These are the members of QL already signed up for the event. Please help us set this event up (as I am new to BIG event organization) and let's make this a get-together to remember!!!

1.kanaway
2.perfectStranger(1 More person with me)
3.Alumnar
4.Jackmohan2007
5.Bluemountain

Please copy those names and add your own if you are interested in participating.

Thanks everybody! :)))

Hi Babu John,

I've seen your post on this site and read a couple of articles that mention you in connection with camping at the Inland Sea. We have a group (8 adults, 1 child) that are hoping to visit the Inland Sea this Thursday in three 4WD vehicles to camp overnight and return on Friday. None of us know the track in, although I have seen it on Google Maps and GPS maps. I am looking at getting a GPS unit and loading a Garmin map from the internet to find the route and in case of emergency. Can you recommend a GPS unit or do you have any other advice for getting there safely? I appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

Regards Vince.

no need to worry guys, this time i'll pass. i'm just learning how to swim. it won't take an hour for me to drown.hahahah we're in for the next trip.

Once we have the topic with the photos up and running (from this trip) we will start a new one as soon as PerfectStranger has the details of costs involved.

I volunteer to ride the jetski around to make sure kanaway doesn't run out of air/water ;)

So thanks perfectStranger for the great spot too!(u r not stranger any more : )

u guys gonna have to start a new topic 4 this new Dhow /Island trip, and QL have to feature it too :p (and another topic for swimmers to the island with canaway!but this time they have to leave 1 day before us! J. kidding : )

As far as I know they rent dhows on the Bandar sea (near the pearl Statue on the cornish).. and every one will pay an amount equals the cost of rent divided on the group number.

... went to the Inland Sea Camping Trip! Just shows how many good friendships emerged from this event.

Once again THANK YOU to the ones who registered for the event and showed up too :)

This Dhow Trip won't be for free, we will arrange a meeting point to collect the money for this trip beforehand and the occupation will be on a first pay - first serve basis. Do not worry because we will make sure that there will be more than one place and time for you to pay the organizers the amount for the event.

Looking forward to this next event already! :)))

PerfectStranger, will it be an organized camp? I mean... with conditions? Just wondering because my back doesn't seem to want to recover from this camping trip!

I have just emailed the photos to QL, so it should only be a matter of time now til they are up. If any of you want the photos emailed directly to your email address, please send me your email via pm and I will send them on.

Have a lovely day everybody!

Hey!

It was a memorable trip and one of those memories that get stuck in humans mind 4 ever!

Organizing was very good and the place DonMeister found above the hill was awesome! It felt like Hawai!

From the moment we arrived to sealine, Alumnar was like a mother to all of us.

The kids also added a cool taste to our trip.

Trekkers what u did was powerful! wish someday will be as fit as u and do it with u! You amazed Every one I told about how far your trekking was!

The only con in this trip was the lack of group activities during our staying there in the camp and around the fire. The interaction happened in small groups in the camp rather than in one big group.

It could have been even more fun if we had someone organizing some group activities..

Now the Dhow Trip looks very cool. Maybe we can do it after 2 - 3 weeks from now!

Sounds like a fab idea PerfectStranger!!! So how do we go about starting to organize that?

Next time I want to sleep out under the stars just like you did mate... I cannot believe the sky at 3,30 a.m., millions of stars, what a sight!!! - I was awake in the car whilst Tony was snoring away under a collapsed tent!

You and Don did so well hunting kanaway down. People like you guys are hard to find and we are so happy to have had you with us - not only due to your experience but mainly because of your great personalities :)))

Tony sends regards back Feazi and he says you know how to contact him if you want to - we are always only a phone call away :) maybe a coffee at the souq soon? ;)

Thanks Alumnar you did well everything was systematically set, and it was a good experience, I hope Tony will be better now, say my regards to him and please arrange this kind of gathering frequently.

Perfect stranger (RAJ) cool dude; feel sad for your car hope u already took out of your car from there, if u still need any help let me know. It was great time with you.

for this great day and night. It was a wonderful experience and memory for us. We met a wonderful group of people. All of you were really nice and ready to help out.

We really felt very safe during the trip. We were very sure of that. I think that is the most amazing side of being a group.

Yesterday all I could do was to sleep. Besides, I ll always remember that wind noise through night, although that was the reason I couldnt sleep all night, after Tony s scary ghost stories ;)

Alumnar so sorry to hear your husband s got flu. Hope he recovers soon. Btw my daughter is still talking about your delicious pasta salad.

Finally, thanks to you all,

Great event Alumnar! Thanks a lot for organizing it!

crazy_fish never showed up, but I met an amazing co-pilot!

Kanaway, was glad to be able to help out. It was a wild ride trying to find you, across the dunes, into the bushes, both our cars nearly got stuck once but we managed to push on. It must've been quite a sight for you guys when we saw you and all that was visible were two headlights thundering towards you haha ;)

Sadly, I didn't find the time to go fishing, will make up for that today at the Corniche, despite the weather. I'm looking forward to the next event so go ahead and count me in!! =D

To my lovely tent neighbour - for treating me to the best food I had in YEARS! THANK YOU! :)))

Trekkers - we admire your strength and you did so well. We never gave up in finding you after dark when you lost your way and look forward to seing you soon.

For the team effort in keeping everybody warm with wood supplied for our HUGE campfire - thank you for the supplies, they sure lasted til bedtime!

For those whose contact I do not have - I am in the process of uploading the photos and will send them tomorrow to QL for them to be uploaded. Please give me your email address via private message and I will make sure to email you all the photos I have.

If any of you want to organize a team to go at 3 it is up to you guys. Our departure time has been set for weeks now and we are sticking to it. We have many people travelling with children and want to make it to the campsite well before sundown to set up camp.

The coordinates for the camp are mentioned above in this topic under camp1.

Glad to hear about the weather - but rain and storm predicted for saturday. We just have to take it as it comes - and pack up if it starts raining on saturday as the conditions to drive on wet sand are much worse for non-experienced drivers.

We have been let down by the others who said they would come with us so it's just car +2 now. If anyone is still looking for a lift let me know as I have space. You'll need your own gear obviously. I would like to get down there well before 12 so am thinking of leaving Doha around 09.30 (First come ...first served).

If anyone's interested I'm going to bring down a couple of power kites if anyone fancies a go.

I for one do not want to share my number with people I have not met, and specially not post it on a public forum. Once we meet up in Sealine, all the involved people in the camping trip will receive my phone number. Groups are not arranged yet, they will depend on the number of cars showing.

Observer, do you have a free space in your car? If yes... Please keep one seat free for crazyfish's friend as he needs a lift. They both showed up at the meet yesterday, so I insist in them having first priority in getting a lift from somebody from Sealine to the Inland Sea.

... bring your own first aid. We need enough tow ropes, sand shovels, one tyre pressure gauge PER VEHICLE.

BE AT Sealine at 12 noon!!! DEPARTURE FROM SEALINE WILL NOT BE DELAYED - IF YOU TURN UP AT 1,15 WHICH IS DEPARTURE TIME WE WILL NOT WAIT TO ACCOMODATE YOU IN THE CONVOY!!!! You will need to sort tyre pressure out and get ready to depart, joining the convoy you will be in and getting your car numbered for the team leader to know his group is complete.

I have so far nominated 4 team leaders - you will all follow us (our car) in groups of 10. The intermediate leaders are there to keep an eye on their smaller groups.

Team leaders:

Alumnar - ahead of the convoy

Perfect Stranger - team leader

DonMeister - team leader

Feazi - team leader

Are you all comfortable with being team leaders?

I now need the tail vehicles for these 4 leaders. Who has enough experience and knows how to keep in line to be at the end of these groups in case somebody gets stuck - to allert everybody to stop and help?

Please make sure that we keep space in some vehicles to accomodate kanaways trekking teams' backpacks and necessary items. They will trek easier and we have agreed we will transport their things for them.

Water - can somebody accomodate in their vehicles kanaways groups' water? Please inform.

freakysaf... ANYBODY can join. You need your own transport, tent and all what you need for the camping trip in order to join us.

Well if anyone has any last minute spots available pm me asap id love to go into the dessert + I can bring.. Supplies.. I have 6 bags of skittles, perhaps we can empty the packets and split them among ourselves incase all our vehicles get stuck,we can use them as emergency food to survive on till help comes, so lemme know once again

By Alumnar• 25 Nov 2009 22:55

... at the moment and after the turnout for the meeting tonight there are no lifts available. DonMeister is giving crazyfish a lift, we are trying to get crazyfish's mate a lift as they came to the meeting tonight. That is the least that was expected from people who did need a lift and are so eager to attend our desert weekend.

As for the get-together tonight to discuss the event and any advise - to be honest, don't put your name down if you can't be asked to make some team effort! Less than 10% of the registered people for the event turned up??? Come on guys, give me a bloody break! I was involved in a car accident today and I was there!!!

All I can say for now is THANK YOU to kanaway and his lovely wife, perfect_stranger, crazyfish and friend, DonMeister and a special THANKS to Feazi who has been my right hand man in getting this event into the final phase. I appreciate who could not make it and pm'd me about it - no problem :).

BUT the rest of you??? Just bear in mind - be self-sufficient on this camping trip. This is the main advise. Wood for the camp fire - we have 4 vehicles with some wood so far, more wood needed. Bring your own first aid kit, tow rope, tyre pressure gauge (VERY IMPORTANT!!!) and if you find it in your hearts to be kind enough to bring some bottles of water for our trekkers - we would appreciate that and I will even pay you from my pocket for the water if needed! Don't expect things to be done for you - this IS a team effort and it will reflect on how the next event will be planned and executed.

We have done many times the same as you - camping is a first for us. Thank you for volunteering to be a group leader - we sure would like you to be. We have attempted many fishing trips but caught nothing except for a sunburn and half the desert in sand back home :)

My husband has been bringing the wood back from work. I have lots of it here outside the house under covered area, all cut up and ready to fire. Let me know when you can come around, I will happily give you instructions on how to get to my place and exchange phone numbers with you on private message.

Irhans, as I posted earlier, if you need a lift you will need to attend our meeting tomorrow and check if anybody attending has any free space in their vehicle.

Good night everybody, will catch up tomorrow :)

Alumnar

I just finished reading all of the comments. My wife and I can collect some wood if we know the address. I have a saw and can cut it to fit in the vehicle. If you need a volunteer for the lead or the back of a group we can do that. We have had many exciting trips to the dunes.

We have a tow strap, compressor, short shovel, battery cables, a tyre plug kit and a home made BBQ.

We very much look forward to making new friends.

Alumnar all excellant advice, it sounds like you have made many successful trips to the dunes. I am a certified Red seal automechaic from Canada and the only thing I can add is that you check all your vehicle fluids. Make sure your engine oil is fresh, clean and to the correct level. Check the coolant level, and master cylinder brake fluid. Let the engine get to operating temperture and check automatic trans fluid.

Happy duning................

By Alumnar• 24 Nov 2009 19:52
Alumnar

... are you coming tomorrow evening? If yes we can load our car with wood and bring it over to the Souq and transfer it there into your car. If not needed at Sealine we can easily get rid of it.

For those who do NOT have a 4x4 - if you want to join us and need a lift, you better turn up tomorrow evening to make sure you can get a lift because the vehicles are gonna be pretty full soon.

FEAZI read this especially the bold one

SAFETY measures: Distance between vehicles! One vehicle going up hill, the other waits until the 1st is over the hill .Careful on top in case the vehicle in front is stuck on the way down. ANY danger situations caused by idiotic driving and ignorance of rules results in being drowned at camp upon arrival!!! (Consider the punishment to be as bad as drowning - I do have a strong latin temper!!!!) ;)

ALUMNAR..!! make sure FEAZi follow this rule coz he is kind of difficult to handle when it comes to dune driving.

By Alumnar• 24 Nov 2009 17:16
Alumnar

Thanks for coming forward with what you can help us with. Getting stuck is always fun, gives us time to get out of the car and have a cigarette break ;) (I nearly overdosed on smoking the first time we went last year with so many stops!)

Guys, are you sure we need gasoline? We normally use those BBQ lighting cubes and newspaper to light big fires and it works every time. What do you think?

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"

*IMPORTANT*

Bring jackets and long jeans/pants. You WILL need them, I was just reading through the new comments and realized myself that when I was there last weekend, we were all huddled around a dying fire trying to stay warm throughout the night.

I might be able to bring some wood, my car isn't made for transport mind you, and the usual supplies to keep me going. I'll help out anyone in need, but at best, I'll only be able to pull them out of the sand since I really have no space in my car. I do have a GPS and a proper tow-rope in case Alumnar wants to add me to the rescue group :P

I'll have a 20L supply of water with me, tap water, and I'll bring along 10L of gasoline just in case. Looking forward to the Souqs tomorrow! =)

U can see the satellite image of the camp location here:

(I tried to put them here as images using [img] code but didn't work I wonder why!)

Regarding the road I'm pretty sure at least 4 cars will get stuck but its part of the experience and fun anyway!

Observer, driving from Sealine to the camp site, if nobody gets stuck and we get there at a reasonably slow pace for everybody to feel comfortable, it will take well over 1 hour.

Yes it will get very cold. That's why we need lots of wood to keep the campfire going all night - that means 12 hours!

Looking forward to meeting you tonight Feazi :)

One more thing, Be careful the desert is cold these days at night! I was there last weekend and it was pretty cold (13 degrees)! so make sure to bring a blanket or some long sleeve T-shirts unless of course u r from Canada!!

Almunar I will answer you regarding the wood: I and my friend will bring some (gonna stuff the back of my pathfinder with piles of wood!) but guys and don't forget to bring some petrol to light the wood easily!

Whoever can turn up at 12, we WILL be at Sealine at noon! We will start preparing and numbering vehicles.

DEPARTURE TIME IS 1,15 PM - whether you are there or NOT!!! We have a camp to set up and I have a child with me, so we need a couple of hours daylight after arriving at destination to set up the cars, tents and everything that is necessary.

There will be NO allowances on departure time - unless you are experienced and have a GPS and can make your way yourself to camp1 (coordinates posted earlier by kanaway, thanks mate!).

SAFETY measures: Distance between vehicles! One vehicle going up hill, the other waits until the 1st is over the hill. Careful on top in case the vehicle in front is stuck on the way down. ANY danger situations caused by idiotic driving and ignorance of rules results in being drowned at camp upon arrival!!! (Consider the punishment to be as bad as drowning - I do have a strong latin temper!!!!) ;)

... but I will not deny that I am nervous! :) ;) It is a BIG scale event, yes, but I am confident that all rules followed we will have a magnificent time!!!

The wood is concerning me though. We have to have it as we need to keep the fire going all night til daylight comes. So folks - what is happening about wood? Have some of you got your own wood supply or do you need some?

WILL SOMEBODY ANSWER ME PLEASE?????

I've been watching this thread since it was created... Alumnar has been doing a great job organizing this so I didn't see the need to criticize anything hehe.

Some thoughts:

* Fishing is illegal in the Inland Sea, but since this is Qatar, most people still do it >:)

* Due to such a large number of people, our timings will be delayed by quite a bit.

* Can't wait for the coffee meet at the Souqs tomorrow to discuss the details! =D

Camping chairs, yes! Carpets - yes! Whatever you like or tickles your fancy! Anything goes as long as there is RESPECT and UNDERSTANDING amongst everybody. You will have to remember there are children going too and I want to feel that our daughter will be safe with everybody who is attending - only a natural mothers' concern, right? :)))

We will give a brief explanation on how to drive the 4x4's up and down a dune to avoid being stuck in the sand. 4x4's will be numbered to make sure nobody is missing or burried in the sand somewhere ;)

I just got disposable BBQ's from Carrefour (excellent and easy) and what looks like the last 2 sleeping bags! Unless they stock up in Villaggio Carrefour it won't be worth going there for camping gear, so I have the feeling that some of you have been before me today, right???

I am still stuck with all the wood hubby is bringing back from work... and no pm's to collect any by anybody, so not very happy at the moment. This wood is for FREE and we all need to contribute in transporting some. Unless you can get hold of some please contact me for collection folks (Feazi, rearranged my plans expecting your call.... where the heck are you???)

Oh we are almost 50 persons in total! thats almost a village!

Alumnar will have a lot of organizing to do! but as I found out after reading the complete topic (took me more than 1 hour at work!!)i found the she has previous experience on this except that this time its a bigger event!

As I understood Camp 1 will be on Khoor alodeed a bit far from sealine correct? we tried to go there once in a group of five 4x4 and the sand there is thick in some places of the route so drivers should have at least a bit knowledge in driving on desert as we will have to pass over small dunes on our way to camp if its located on Khoor Alodaeed otherwise we will spend the time pulling cars stuck in sand and may not arrive before 4!

* For the BBQ we will need 1 grill for every 5 people so we need at least 7 BBQ grills.

* I have 2 hoki toki and it will be better if every group have one to use it to communicate between the front and the rear drivers 4 free and directly (better than mobile especially if we are in areas with low mobile signal!)

so if any one else has one it will be very helpful in our camp even when we arrive there the organizers can use it to speak with each other.

And what about chairs? will we need to bring chairs or we will set on the sand or carpet?

for the guy who said we should not harm the animals there are almost no animals there!

I recommend that you also should organize some games/competitions we can play on the camp. u can talk about them in the meeting on wednesday and the guys here can suggest some games, like rope pulling, acting ( we can film a short movie there!) or other light games u know!

Lets also hope it will not rain on us as it will be partially cloudy in friday.

Thats it every thing is clearly explained by Alumnar... lets join us on wednesday,Tables already booked, Cafe is infront of BASKIN ROBIN in souq please try to be there on time at 8.30 SHARP, i already booked 20 seats but if it will increase they will provide more and please as we mentioned before everyone has to pay for his own(FYI), and its essential for everyone to buy some thing even one can of softdrink will work. so guys be prepare for this great event and show your interest who dont have 4x4 please try to join us or post your information here so we will get some idea and will try to adjust you.

I am giving my email and mobile no if you need any informaion please contact me:)

... come and join us at the souq. I suppose we will be there until around 10 at least to get all last minute details sorted.

Sujith, as mentioned before in this topic, we don't see the need in spending all that money to camp in the desert for a night. We take our own stuff and sure will have lots of fun! Thanks for the suggestion though, maybe one day we can do an organized one, but for now I am sure we will all enjoy our DIY overnight camping experience :)

Crazyfish, make sure you can come and meet us wednesday evening. Mohammed Adnan, who posted above, has space in his vehicle, so why not contact him to see if he can accomodate you? If not, I am sure somebody will, as long as you turn up at the meeting and your need of a lift with somebody is brought up.

You will need: camping tent, sleeping bag, lots of water and whatever you eat/drink, rubbish bags (I must insist we leave the site as clean as we found it, so all rubbish needs to be taken back to Sealine and disposed there in the big rubbish containers), change of clothes, swimming stuff and towels for the ones who want to swim, warm clothing for sitting out at night, Energizer rechargable lamps or torches to make your way to wherever you need away from the camp (toilet subject!), TYRE PRESSURE GAUGE for EACH VEHICLE, as well as TOWROPE!!! A few shovels are necessary too - Carrefour sells those nice little foldy-up ones :)

Can anybody think of anything else? I think my mind has gone blank!!!

Did somebody mention they will bring a BBQ? How about those disposable BBQ trays you can buy in Carrefour? Those do for a night in the desert, you will be able to BBQ whatever you take unless you want to eat ready-made food taken with you. One of those trays per person (the larger size) should do to BBQ a meal :)

FOR THOSE WHO ARE DOING TREKKING!!! It is important you attend this meeting. We will need to coordinate with you guys what time you will set off from Sealine and want you guys to have some kind of recognition item on you (a cloth or towel of some sort of colour? I don't know, you guys tell me what is the best to use). We will need to exchange numbers to make sure you are all ok on the way to Camp1.

tht's impressive.. i can collect some wood from your place & bring it till sealine. as i dont have a 4*4.. please try to accomadate both of us in to one of your vehicles.

By Alumnar• 22 Nov 2009 18:16

... the meeting time will have to be at 12 lunchtime. Let me explain to you what happens... all of us need to let the tire pressure down. Then we will divide the travel groups into groups of 10 cars, each car will be allocated a number (A1-A10, B1-B10 and so on) so it is easy to track if your group is complete. There will be a 'leader' in each group and a 'back help' who are the most experienced in the desert. They will make sure everybody is ok. We will set off in groups close to each other BUT each leader and back car will need to make sure their group is ok. We will be in touch with each other throughout the journey through the desert if needed, when somebody gets stuck we will ALL stop and help when required. We need to get to the camp latest at 2,30 to set up for the night before it gets dark.

I am sure that once we are ready to set off it will be close to 1 pm anyway, but 1,15 pm for final departure time from Sealine is the deadline. We have to expect that we will need to stop to get cars out who got stuck AND we will need to regroup. I will print those papers for the cars out and bring blue tak so you can put one inside each vehicle.

I will need to know who has experience in the desert and who doesn't. I will also ask whoever can't get hold of wood to pm me their number and I will be in touch so you can collect the wood from my house as my husband has been bringing a load of it back every day for the last few days.

Feazi, I am gonna pm you my number, if you can give me a call this evening before 10 pm so we can have a talk about the meeting on wednesday. I thank you for your help and the cafe meeting point in the souq that you are arranging is absolutely fine. 8,30 my husband and I will be there.

By Alumnar• 21 Nov 2009 22:15
Alumnar

On the post before you I have posted the last update on meeting point and time for next friday (12 noon - just off road at Sealine). As for wednesday, please give us the name of the place Feazi and book it for us - also please a quick explanation of the location inside the Souq. Maybe book it initially for 20 people and we see how it goes? We can always add more chairs to our tables :)

What I will do is maybe meet you either during the week or wednesday evening to transfer a load of wood into your car. We want to gather more as what we have might look like lots but won't keep the fire going for more then 2 hours - not enough!

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"

By anonymous• 21 Nov 2009 20:58

Well i can take that budden in my car, when ever u want u can transfer it to my car, and one more request as you know this post is on the front page of Qatarliving so please if u get the time update some information like the date and final place of the event:)

and friends as Alumnar said read the whole topic and the people who dont have 4x4 and they are also not able to join us coming meeting please try to give your names now so we will try to adjust them with other people.

Alumnar whats your comments about this...?

By Alumnar• 21 Nov 2009 18:40
Alumnar

Feazi, thanks for your input :)

Once again, read through the whole topic. We will meet at Sealine just off road past the Sealine Resort on Friday at 12 noon. Read the advise about what to purchase for your 4x4's. Today my husband brought back from work a big load of wood, I will need to coordinate with some of you to pick the wood up from our house OR to transfer some into your vehicles when we meet on wednesday. We sure will need more though, so let's keep gathering and remember - one big bag per vehicle, we have to keep the fire going!

Alumnar

ya sure why should you pay for anyone, every one will pay for his own, i am going daily there so i will book the table and our get-together on wednesday so we will get the place, by the end of this week we will know how many people are going to join us. it is infront of Coffee Beanery, shop name written in Arabic its in the corner. i will post location and cafe picture if its required.

By Alumnar• 19 Nov 2009 23:40
Alumnar

... on a order and pay straight away system. There is no way I am paying for anybody. Just clarifying :) Decide the place between you all, whichever suits, but make sure we can get coffee, soft drinks etc.

Who can book the place for our big group? Feazi, if it is somebody you know maybe you can book and let us know which one it is? I don't want dinner - just coffee or softdrink.

i used to go to souq waqif with QLSG when Da still active. Most cafe in souq waqif would be packed in that time of the night especially in the weekend.

And certain cafe have some silly rules that people who go their cafe MUST buy main course. So if you guys coming in a big group, one of you have to order the table.

And also, if you go to one of the cafe, very often they dont do separate billing. And also they dont take any advance reservation.

I am not sure if Alumnar have think that further down the line. DaRuDe with QLSG sometimes ended up have to pay for people who left early and forgot to pay. I dont want her to end up with this headache in the gathering.

i've got the campsites location. there are two temp camp sites on the map shown to me by feazi.

temp camp 2 : 24deg39'18.00"N 51deg20'01.62"E

temp camp 1 : 24deg38'27.12"N 51deg25'06.50"E

temp camp 2 is a little bit farther(8km) to the west of temp camp 1. i would suggest temp cam 1. i've been there before, the view is great. around temp camp 1 there are bunches of sand dunes where we can pick our choice.

Hi All,

I have been doing this for many years and every winter I set up a camp at the Inland Sea overlooking Saudi Border(About 50KMs from Sealine). The camp has 4 tents including a Shamiana / gazebo. We normally go on a thursday evening / friday and camp overnite. The camp has a generator,Hot Plate,Kettle,BBQ grill etc and is generally self sufficient for a small group. We normally carry BBQ meat, breakfast items and drinks. You are most welcome to join us on weekends.Regards. BJ

"leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures, kill nothing but time"

1.Pack out what you pack in. you can pick up litter left by others.

2. For cooking, consider using a camp stove instead of a campfire if possible.Camp stoves leave less of an impact on the sand.

3.Observe all fire restrictions. If you must build a fire—use existing fire rings, build a mound fire, or use a fire pan.

4.Respect the rights of others, all recreational trail users, campers and others so they can enjoy their recreational activities undisturbed.

5.In areas without toilets, use a portable latrine if possible and pack out your waste, otherwise it’s necessary to bury your waste. Human waste should be disposed of in a shallow hole (6”-8” deep), away from campsites, or trails. Pack out your toilet paper.

6. do not harm animals.

have a safe and fun camping to everyone!

We will check who has space in the vehicles to accomodate others who have no 4x4.

One tyre gauge for each 4x4 is a MUST to check the tyre pressure we need to drop every tyre to. To pump them back up we can easily use the little place outside Sealine Resort as we will get back at a good time (daytime) before dark.

Tow Rope - yes. We will need more then one in case one snaps - as we will need backup if that happens.

For all of you who have space in the vehicle, or for the ones who are registered to attend without having transport, please clarify the situation so we can start making calculations :)

Alumnar - 4x4 is full.

REMEMBER the WOOD and plenty of WATER!!! We want to make a big fire! :)

Alumnar I have question..? like do you know the exact no of people and vehicles. Because if anyone who don’t have 4x4 and they want to join us, we can adjust them also. Don’t you think it’s better to finalize this before?

And friends please try to buy one tyre gauge to check the tyre air pressure. So need to wait for others, you can get it from car decoration shops or lulu and carefore. I will try to bring Tow Rope also.

Make sure to read all the text in this topic, it will tell you what you need to bring TO SHARE (only a big bag of wood, charcoal and barbeque lighting cubes).

Any questions, feel free to ask them :)

Even if you dont have duning experience, dont worry we will have some expert who will help you,(you can count me also, lol) come for sure you will enjoy your trip.

Well i would like to thanks Alumar to arrange such a good event.

Waiting for exact date of the event.

Good Day.

... when the event is still 2 weeks away? What is there else to add? Everybody takes their own food and drinks, wood for the campfire, tents and lots of water (read guidelines further up in this topic), blankets and changes of clothes, rechargable Energizer lamps... whatever every person needs for a night out in the desert.

We will meet at Sealine just past the Sealine Resort as soon as you go off-road at 12 noon and depart from there after all the tyres are let down (correct tyrepressure for the desert drive) and last explanations are given about safety procedures to follow when following a convoy of 4x4's. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them and I will happily reply.

Please read the guidelines I posted further above in this topic. The rest we will discuss on the day - it is very easy and straight forward and we will make sure you all know what to do. In the end we are all there to pull each other out of the sand if necessary :)

...tubs, our 6 year old daughter is going, so kids are not a problem at all :)

... sabrang, unless you have camping gear and access to a 4x4 I can't see how you can go. You need camping gear for overnight stay and a 4x4 to get where we are going (Inland Sea).

... azilana, details for meet-up will be confirmed soon - it is still early to do so. But it will be outside Sealine Resort, just off road before the desert starts. Probably around 12 - 12.30 lunchtime. Return - next day at lunchtime too :)

I (along with 2 other family members) would really-really like to join.

However as a newcomer, I would not have any camping gears (Left them all back home) and will definitely not have access to a 4x4.

Will that be an impediment to join in?

Cheers

Having someone else organize the trip takes away half the fun. Secondly, the tour operators are rude people;going by what I hear.

I have to be honest and say that for me this is probably a bit to ambitious at this stage. I haven't been in Qatar that long and I don't have any of the required items especially a 4x4, and I'm one of these people that prefers to be self sufficient as much as possible. I would hire a 4x4 but having priced it, it would be cheaper for me to go on a safari. So I think I will wait for Mrs. Bandit to return next year, and we will go together then.

You guys who are equipped are going to have a ball, and I look forward to reading all about it ;)

I Totally agreed with Alumnar.................................

By Alumnar• 3 Nov 2009 14:35
Alumnar

... to have anybody:

- do the catering,

- help us get there (can't we all drive?)

- do anything for us.

The plan of this trip is a self-sufficient overnight fun camp with campfire. We don't need more than 2 or 3 BBQ's, then we take a bag of charcoal each and get a coolbox each (with fresh ice inside) that lasts til next day to keep drinks and food cold. Also a bag of wood per registered car/family - that is not asking too much, is it?

Instead of paying a company to do it why not hire a 4x4 between a group of you, for those who don't have a 4x4?

I know how to organize events - as long as people stick to what we all arrange. We will give detailed instructions and check every 4x4 personally before setting off. We have done it before many times and I for one will not pay a rip-off price for a few bits of meat to throw on a BBQ and a few soft drinks.

By timebandit• 3 Nov 2009 12:47
timebandit

Sorry... you guys know best... I will keep quiet now

By Mirage• 3 Nov 2009 12:39

The safari companies charge and insane amount per person per night and they do all the driving, which takes the whole fun out of the trip. BBQ and food is never a problem, get a small grill, some frozen hot dogs, and badum badabing, you have a bbq.

By timebandit• 3 Nov 2009 12:20

Good call qatarpro. If we use the help of one of the safari operators perhaps they can help those of us without 4x4's as well. It would certainly be worth a phone call or two.

... reach destination latest 1,30 to 2 pm to set up camp as it will be dark by around 4,30pm. Quadbikes are fine if people know that kids have the right to play as well - my daughter will be playing by the sea and joining in with the group. I can't see anybody being an ass and decide to ride quadbikes through the middle of the set up camp - do you? But I will have somebody to supervise her 24x7 - I won't take any chances as I want to mingle and get to know people too.

By anonymous• 2 Nov 2009 20:17

...:)

Alumnar - It will require a few precautions if kids are coming. I wouldn't recommend quadbikes in that case, incase, anyone is planning for bringing theirs. It's better to reach at the venue early on to do the set up and also to ensure that we have plenty of time at hand.

First Advice – DO NOT PANIC!!!!!

Equipment:

A good 4x4!

Spade/Shovel comes in handy.

A tow rope is also very useful at times, get the strongest you can, the flat fibre woven ones are available in Carrefour.

Tyre Pressure gauge to drop the pressure of the tyres to 1 to 1.2 Barg. (Get one with a little stub fitted which allows you to push the tyre valve in to let the pressure out.)

You can pump the tyres back up at a small shop just outside of Sea Line Resort, cost 5 Riyals, queue depends on the day…

Elastic luggage cords, lots of them, to tie everything securely down in the car or your stuff could end up all over the car. Carrefour sells them at 5 Riyals per pack!

Don’t take glass bottles of anything fizzy because they can explode with the bumping about (very bad experience!), take cans. When you fill your coolbox try to put a towel or similar on top before you close the lid to keep everything tightly packed.

Flashlights, we also take a light that can recharge or run directly from the car cigarrette lighter.

Tent, sleeping bags, pillows, swimming gear, towels, wet wipes come in handy, sun hat and sun block, change of clothes. I don’t know but it might get cold at night, who knows? So perhaps some warmish clothing would be a good idea just in case - and an extra blanket.

Rubbish bags to take all the litter away as we’re all responsible citizens, aren’t we???

Mobile Phone:

GPS is very very handy but not strictly necessary if it’s a big group and two or three cars in the group have one.

Fishing rods and reels etc., bait is prawns or fish pieces, I have never caught anything but I know folks who have (at least that’s what they say…)!!!

Wood so we can make a collective bonfire that will last more than 5 minutes and will keep us singing for a few hours!

As a round person I always take lots of food… oh! and lots and lots of water.

And wouldn’t it be lovely to have a telescope to view those lovely twinkling stars that rumour has it can be seen so clearly as there’s very little light pollution.

Driving

Turn the VCD (traction control) off, put to 4 wheel drive high, lock the differential (if you have one of those fancy expensive cars)

Normally driving is in a line as it’s easy to meet another vehicle coming towards you over the same dune, as long as the first car makes it over okay then the rest are safe. So do you see what kind of responsibility the 'leading 4x4' has?

Going up dunes: WAIT (!!!) for the car in front to finish the climb as if he gets stuck he will have to reverse down to try again (as may you) and you don’t want to have to stop half way up the hill as you will also get stuck. Always try to go straight up, it’s not always possible but in general it’s the best way.

Keep the revs high, you don’t need to be going terribly fast but keeping the revs high and so keeping your momentum is important. I have an automatic car and on the hills put it into second and even first sometimes. Typical trip to the Inland Sea will see me use half a tank of petrol round trip. I always fill up at the garage halfway up the Messaeid Road so when I get to Sea Line I have a full tank to start.

Going down the dunes the rule is the same, allow the person in front to get down before you start down the hill, take it slowly as gravity really helps (I don’t know of anybody getting stuck going down!) Always go straight down the hill as you don’t want to be facing sideways down a steep dune, this is when cars can roll over.

If the car behind disappears from you rear view mirror he or she is probably stuck, please stop when you can and if they don’t reappear see if you can go back to help.

We should try to arrange things so that experienced and inexperienced drivers are mixed together to be able to help out the novices. But getting stuck is part of the experience and happens to old and new alike.

A good tip if you are stuck is to try to reduce the tyre pressure a little more. I have found that 0.9 barg. has saved me much digging, sweating and towing many times. If you do go down to this pressure take it easy on the flat sandless sections to prevent tyres overheating.

We need a list of car numbers, make, colour and phone numbers of occupants so we can check everybody arrives safely, both at the destination and back at sea line. We don’t want to leave anyone behind.

So guys... now all we need is the day to come and off we go! :)))

Was this helpful? Anything else you need please just ask freely - we are here to make it as easy as possible for any of you. And trust me folks - it is amazing fun! :)))

Alumnar, whatever you do, please don't let Timebandit near any quad bikes! We had quite an adventure with them at Sealine last week.....thought we'd be stuck in the dunes forever!

... don't worry, it will be an easy route. The tyre pressure will need to be adjusted anyway whatever the route is through the desert. As I posted above, I will get the essential guidelines posted here tonight :)

but we're taking only 1 so the other +1 will be riding with us. Sorry i couldn't commit if i could have someone ride with us as it's not my vehicle and I'm not driving.

One question though, could we go pass a route that we won't get stuck in the sand as my companion's first time to the INLAND SEA...
