Running in Qatar - Doha Bay Running Club

By karlstreet

I have formed a running group that meet every Friday morning at 6am on the Corniche next to the Sheraton Hotel by the circular coffee shop. There are 8 of us, 2 running the dubai marathon, 2 running the RAK half marathon, I just ran the dubai half marathon this morning. We run 8 to 12KM+ up to 25km. No running events in Doha, many in UAE and Dubai. Join us if you are interested.

Search for the Facebook page - request to join the group, you will be sent a message that you need to reply to otherwise you will not be accepted. We have over 800 Facebook members at the last count. Though around 40 60 active runners taking part in one or more training sessions.

The group has now grown to 150 Facebook members and 20 to 35 runners on a Friday morning. We continue to run from the 0 marker on the Corniche next to the Sheraton Hotel. We run different routes with pre-arranged water stops. Post-run social at Verge Nano coffee bar near the Tennis Stadium. The majority of active members ran in the Doha College 10km race last week.

We now meet at 5.30am - we no longer just run along the Corniche as it is a bad surface to run on. We prefer to meet and run different routes each week from the Corniche, usually around the West Bay area. We will run less distance during the Summer and we have pre-arranged water stops. We have also created a Facebook page that you can also join = www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=136365333049726

We intend to use this for week to week discussions and route options and social events.

Would definitely love to join you guys once i get my own transport as i live at the other end of corniche atm.

pindal, have a look at their website here http://dohabayrunningclub.webs.com/

It says that they run 10km (5km to and fro). 10KM at the moment is definitely too much for me. Guess i'll use this time to start on the routine.

Not sure where to get a good pair of running shoes as i am also looking around. Saw the usual addidas, nike brands in city centre and villagio. Am also looking for a sports armband for my mobile. If anybody can advise where to find one, that would be helpful.

hi ! good to here that there are other runners out in Doha :) Are you guys still running every friday ? How long / far do you all usually run ? Would like to join when im back on land - aiming for to complete a half marathon at the end of the year, it would be great to be able to get some running done on outdoors again.

Off topic, do you know where i can get good running shoes ? I have only recently moved here.

cheers

ps @nvanhattem: where do you go for yoga ?

I'm a walker and wanna-be-runner. I plan to be running 10ks at the Dubai Marathon's in Jan next year. Is anyone interested in coaching me to success?

I will be following some of the training basics of this website:

http://www.runforthekids.com.au/r4k/training01-1.asp

plus adding yoga 4 times a week

Thanks. Does anyone know of a beginner running group? Not Hash, been there, did not enjoy that!

All are welcome to join our group and the group could probably offer some good advice, but currently I am not aware of any beginners training with the group. Again anyone with an interest is welcome, it is a good group.

Hello,

I am not a professional runner, but I would like to start training and getting back in shape. Would it be ok if I join or is this only for people who have experience running? I would actually like to start training for a 10km run. Are there other beginners training?

Let me know!

As chadt74 said we meet at 5.30am at the moment as it is so hot. We will change it back to 6am in October some time. Only 4 of us ran last week, but I expect more will join us after Eid. Towards the end of October those that are interested can join me in running longer distances. 10km plus 12km to InterCon and back to the Sheraton in preparation for the Half & Full Dubai Marathons. I have contacted Losail race track organizers about the possibility of running a 10km race at their track over the Winter. We would also need sponsors for this event.

Yes we still run on Friday mornings, but due to the heat we meet at 5.30. The location is on the Corniche at he 0KM marker (not on the Sheraton property but next to it). Due to the heat and vacations there are fewer of us right now but we are there and you can pretty much tell the runners down there.

Been in Doha for the last 5 years, predominantly running on my own. Done a couple of Dubai marathons and am now prepping for the Athens Classic in October. Would be interested in helping to develop a Mirdif Milers type club here. Is anyone still running from the Sheraton?

Hello runners,

There are quite a few marathon in the ME / Asia region.

I am trying to form a regular travel group with whom I would like to travel for marathons (mostly over the weekends).

Following are some of the races I have in mind..in case someone is interested.

Oct 2nd - Kathmandu Marathon, Nepal.

Oct 16th - Amman International Marathon, Jordan

Nov 7th - Beirut Marathon, Lebanon

Jan 21st - Dubai Marathon, UAE

Jan 26th - Luxor Marathon, Egypt

Feb ?? - Abu Dhabi Marathon, UAE (Full Marathon next yr)

Most of these places are quite cheap to fly to (under QAR 1,000). I usually fly out on Thurday and return on Sunday or Monday.

It'll be nice to have a Doha contigent at these races just like DCS & Mirdiff Milers in UAE.

Look forward to hearing from you.

See you all at the coffee shop on the corniche beside the sheraton, recovering from plantar fasciitis so I will just call down to meet the group and perhaps log 20 - 30 minutes

Last week we ony ran 10km -recovering from running the marathon in Dubai - will run further this weekend, though if you want to stop at 10km as some do that is not a problem.

As for the race - I am thinking November this year because unless someone has organized such an event in Qatar before I think that there will many barriers to anything organized. I certainly won't be able to do it by myself

Might even consider 10 miles or 16.6km instead.

Been teaching here since August running on my own everyday, would love to come along or here of any runners interested in forming a more regular group also, I train most evenings in Aspire Park or somewhere on the campus of aspire anyway, plantar fasciitis at the moment means I run exclusively on grass for a little while. Is the 6am run still on?? Peter from Ireland 7154991

A 10km race would be a good starting point, probably later in the year would be better to give people a chance to train.

Your biggest issue would probably be contacting the police and authorities in order to get the roads closed down. Would you need public liability insurance out here?

I'm sure that there would be a bit of interest, there's not much competition for events!

I would like to organize a running event in Doha. However, I was thinking of starting small scale and going for a 10km ace instead first to guage interest and then step up to a half marathon the following year if there is a good turn-out. I was thinking a good plac to run the evnt would b from the Hyatt hotel - the race could be around the Pearl and back. The problem with the Marathon is that you will not get as many people entering. The Dubai Creek Striders Half Marathon is a local event with no money and attracted 1000 entrants this year the Dubai Marathon with all of its money, advertising and status only attractd 1500 last year.

When would you like to organize the event? The arliest would be mid November through early March. It would b better if we could find a Friday that did not clash with any other major running event in the region.

I'd be interested as am taking part in the Dubai Marathon as well.

How about if we arrange a marathon in Doha? Please call me at 355.0210 to discuss (if interested).
