Remarks about National Day irk citizens
Source ::: The Peninsula /By Abdullah Abdulrahman
DOHA: Disparaging remarks about National Day celebrations on a popular local website have upset many in the local community, says a young national.
Some remarks against the festivities and the people of Qatar as well as Asian expatriates were in bad taste and smack of racism, said Mohamed Al Jufairi, a civil engineer.
“We are quite upset and writing to some major corporations which advertise on this website to withdraw their patronage,” he told this newspaper in a brief interview yesterday.
Al Jufairi said he has received American education right from school to university levels and know what constructive criticism is. “But the comments about Qatari nationals and National Day are really humiliating.”
“We are all for freedom of expression but that does not mean you cross boundaries and heap insults on us,” he said.
Remarks that all Qataris are arrogant and egoists are not correct since a large number of them are simple-minded and good people. “Some of us may be bad but to say that all of us are arrogant cannot be true.”
The people who made derogatory remarks about Qatar and its people should look back at their own countries and see what happens there during New Year festivities, for instance. “Worst things happen in the West,” said Al Jufairi, insisting that nothing short of an apology from the website would calm tempers.
Other nationals this newspaper spoke to yesterday also expressed disappointment on the humiliating comments posted by several expatriates on this popular website.
Fahad Al Marri said, “The National Day was an opportunity for celebrating and if some faulty acts occurred during the celebration, it might be committed by handful of minors. Generalising individual behaviour over all Qataris was absolutely a fatal mistake. The people of Qatar respect celebrations of other people and the least thing they deserve is a mutual respect.”
Radhi Al Hajeri said, “I do not agree with the comments posted by visitors of that website as Qatar is known for its capability of organising leading events. Expatriate who complained of congestions and overcrowding had the facility of alternative routes. Why didn’t they use it?”
Mohamed Al Mullah said, “This is our National Day and it is our basic right to celebrate. It true, some youth due to their age had exaggerated in showing their happiness”.
Abduhamid Al Riyahi said, “I wonder why those bloggers have commented this way. All I noticed that expatriates including westerners had shared the happiness with their Qatari counterparts. Such comments were absolutely baseless”.

and it depends on them that how they celebrate it.. but i ask 1 question that they says that" people of Qatar respect the national days of other countries..if this is true then why they fine & (hajiz cars) dozens of pakistani (on 14 of august 2009) at corniche just because of putting pakistani flags on their cars while they celebrating their ND..??

Well, stereotyping has been there & will be there. It is easier in cyberspace to throw racial remarks as your identity is masked. If anything, people should stop paying unnecessary attention to such remarks. Its up to an individual how he/she wants to be perceived. If his/her behavior in public is courteous & well-mannered , I don't understand why people will have a bad impression about that individual.
I'am not surprised. The way qlers are behaving leaves a lot to be desired. They should get into fruitful discussions rather than getting into insults.
Life is Beautiful...Indeed!
When Mel Gibson went on his drunken anti-Jewish tirade that night, he might have been offensive to some people, but he wasn't doing anything illegal.
Any consequences he suffered -- becoming a bit of a social pariah, losing work -- were purely because people chose to not associate with him because they found him offensive.
It would be like if nobody wanted to hire me here because I told lots of off-color jokes about Muslims and Arabs.
Freedom of speech laws in the US involve many issues like libel (spoken), slander (written), malice (intent to cause harm), whether the person expressed something as a fact or his opinion (the latter is okay).
You certainly can't use hate speech to incite violence (tell someone to go out and shoot all the gays, or riot in front of synagogue), and employers can be held accountable if their workplace allows a pattern of harrassment to exist (so you can't tell the chick in the cubicle next to you that she has a nice rack and expect nothing to happen).
But if some random person calls you a whore/nigger/faggot/kike/towelhead/wetback other offensive word, that's pretty much considered protected speech in the USA.
You don't like it, walk away.

HalaWala.. That exactly what I am trying to say. In the west they have Race Discrimination Acts. That if you offend someone based on their Race or Religion there are consequences.
Again I think that healthy debates and understanding each other rather than critising each other are the way forward.

In Democracy at least you can debate and make people understand each other. As I stated in the start of my earlier post. It has to do with educating the Expats abouts the do's and Don'ts as well as reminding the Citizens of this country that they have invited people from all of the world with different beleifs, cultures and ways of life. So both parties have to understand and mutually respect each other.
Where as democracy has directly nothing to do with but atleast in a democracy someone will have to carry the can, when things go wrong?

While people are pointing out against democracy in this country and democracy in another, people are neglecting to point out that freedom of speech has loopholes in both the US and Europe.
In Europe, a person cannot openly deny the exisitance of the Holocaust, something which I applaude since it is obviously exisitant, and a lot of innocent people died in that time. Other tragic consequences of loopholes include banning the construction of new Minerates were in Switzerland because they "ruin democracic points of views", and in some cases, headscarves are also banned in Education institutions. All of these things are loopholes in freedom of speech and expression.
In the US, if a person says offensive remarks against certain people, lets say Jews, they could be forced to resign or be shunned from his job (ie Mel Gibson).
So, how on earth do these democratic nations get away with it? Its basically what the people in Europe and the US want.
Those are just things I can come up on the top of my head, Im sure there are others.
Website removes unsavoury remarks

DOHA: Qatar Living, a locally popular website, yesterday withdrew some disparaging remarks people had posted on it earlier about the National Day celebrations and the people of Qatar as well as Asian expatriates after some nationals lashed out at the site in a report The Peninsula carried in yesterday’s edition.
The site even carried an apology written by one Ahmed who said: “We just want to point out that Qatar Living is not for or against anyone. It is a website dedicated to helping people make the most out of living in Qatar.
He went on: “There are bound to be a small number of people who make comments that are offensive. It is unfair for these comments to generalise and stereotype people.
“We use our community guidelines to clearly indicate what is acceptable on our website. We do apologise if any users have fallen short of these guidelines,” said Ahmed commenting on the website.
Websites chip in for traffic awareness drive
DOHA: The Traffic Department, with the support of several social networking websites, is set to launch an intensive traffic awareness campaign.
As a precursor to it, the department held a meeting with the moderators of more than 20 websites here the other day.
Brigadier Saad Al Kharji, Director, Traffic Department, said the meeting discussed how the websites can be used as an effective tool to convey the department’s day-to-day information and messages to the public.
These websites are one of the best medium through which the department can reach out to the public. The department officials discussed with them how they can help us to reach out to the public more effectively, Al Kharji said.
The meeting also discussed about a possible coordination between various websites and how to send out mobile text messages to the public through these websites.

What’s democracy got to do with it?
Do criticism have to be associated with ethnic profiling & name calling?
I think more information needs to be given to the Expats arriving and even for those living in Qatar for a long time about do's and don'ts of this country.
Qatar is a very peaceful, pleasant and rich country. But still is not a democracy. So yes we have to sensible with our words about the host country and its citizens.

Penisnula is at it again today. Check out todays edition...
And the hard talk sometimes have bad taste. I like the Qatar Debate on TV and do realise everything that are to be said have been screened to fit the taste of everyone.
yes- we are entitled to the so-called freedom of expression yet- we are responsible for it... again and again, DO NOT GENERALISE ALL... shortcomings of others should not be blamed to the others... and again and again, we should still know how to respect after all this is their own country...
very simple "show respect for u to receive same respect". its very sad to say that many childish people dont understand the importance of national day. just hoping that every mistake happened here in QL will leave now and no more discrimination.
DON'T LET FANTASY ROB YOU OF YOUR REAL LIFE BEAUTY
I would suggest that people get used to an open press and free speech. If some Qatari's did things that were wrong, then it should be OK to talk about it, criticize it, etc. If people don't want to hear that some people did things that were not right, then they should be dealing with the people that did the wrong things, not try to silence anyone that was not happy about the actions.
When a Qatari makes a mistake, it is OK to point that out, it is OK to tell the world what happened, it is Ok to say it was not right.
There have been other mistakes made by Qatar officials, look at some of the problems at the International sporting events. If you think that they have all been handled to world class standards, you haven't been anywhere else to see how things should work.
And I thought this happens only in BOLLYWOOD....
no more bobcorn n Bebsi in Qatar.. Gotta Import from somewhere ....
On serious notes - I have nothing to say... the topic doesn deserve it.

Mr. Q's Blog - A Qatari's view on Qatar.
1. About someone justifying the acts coz it happens in the west too.(Talking about that, from when on did the west become a benchmark for Qataris?)
Just coz it happens in other western nations doesnt mean its fine. Its wrong there and its wrong here. There has to be ppl who criticise it there and someone here too criticised it coz this is a forum about qatar. Big deal. If you really want to emulate western nations, why not start with something good? Why copy their worst? Their hooliganism?
2. You will find 'hate sites' for everything in the world including Mickey Mouse. Such is the net. Get over it. Listen to it if it has merit. Ignore and move on with life if it hasnt. Whining on it will only make you look ridiculous and its not gonna stop it in future. Being level headed in the face of criticism will only make you more respected. ("These are arrows shot at my heart but have fallen at my feet. I refuse to bend over, pick them up and stab myself in teh heart with it" -buddha)
3. If whoever got enraged by those comments had jus ignored the racist comments as beneath deserving a response, the whole thing wouldnt have gained this much coverage. Newspapers really need to understand the difference between journalism and sensationalism. If they think journalism means going around asking ppl about all those umpteen sites that criticise qatar then more power to them. lets have more space wasted.

Well, its just another news item. But, why they didn't report the lovely posts of many expatriates who defended the local people on their best day of the year with equal force...
"He who angers you, controls you".
In every country there is criticism, of the government, of the people, some beyond the point of being racist. Its how we respond to criticism that differentiates "us" from "them".
Even if we "control" what happens on QL, do you think these "haters" will stop. Its the virtual world, the world wide web. They will find another outlet to vent their opinions.
And by giving in to their hatred, we are letting them affect us. That's not the way. Criticism should be allowed, but below the belt opinions can be edited out.
they really dont find anything to fill their pages so they visit different blogs and take articles from that to fill their pages..
This is not the first time they did so. Even in past they COPY PASTED topics from Qatar living and published it on their pages. Just to get some fame they will even try to reach down a gutter hole.
And shame on Peninsula high official who is watching all this being a member of QL.
Gulf TImes has been a bit more circumspect in doing this.
This is not the first time it happened when a topic gets sensationalized by the newspaper...Gulf Times or Peninsula.
1. Journalist needs to go back to school so he can learn about citing sources - did he actually graduate from somewhere??? Cos he just failed high school journalism 101
2. I get fed up with some of the Qatar bashing and other here too so don't post as much as I did.
Well, I did come across couple of articles that I did not really like but that does not mean the Web Site is responsible for it and I think that most of the members on this post are agreeing.
I along with my wife and daughter started my drive from TV roundabout and it took me more 3 hours to reach Cornice, but to be frank I enjoyed every single second that I spent on the road and was really happy to see both Qataris and Non-Qataris enjoying the event equally.
Thanks to few Qataris families who were not only kind to us but also greeted us with a big smile and wished us for National day and presented my daughter with Qatari Flags.
Every evet has good and bad experience irrespective of which country it is organized in, we simply can't blame everything on Qatari Youths just because its Qatar National Day. Everyone creating trouble on the road is not Qatari and everyone who is good is not an expat.
Always remember, when you point one finger at someone, three of your own fingers are point to yourself.
I personally think, it was a great even and I really thank both Qatar Government and the local residents of Qatar for making my day the most memorable.
The wise person has long ears and a short tongue.
Peninsula reporters are the worst of the lot. Most of the local news that they report is a copy paste from QL discussion forums.
lol...this can go on with an anti-anti-QatarLiving on Facebook... and on, and on... :)
this issue has simply been blown out of proportion and is getting publicity for all the wrong reason, the harm being caused by this is going to be irreversible.
As far as the real instigation to this uproar is concerned, the commentors who blew the lid are just happily watching the drama unfold piece by piece.
Those users who are respobnsible for this should be punished, They made all the QLers look like racists.
"QL is the safe haven for Islam and Qatar haters"
I don't agree with that. But, what can say, is just my opinion...And that the POSITIVE thing in QL: we can spoke our minds! With crap, no crap, hate, love, sins, stupidity, smartness, diversity!!! Don't blame QL, blame yourselves, your ego's and lack of understanding. It's just my opinion.
...QL is no different. Remarks on this website cannot be construed as the representation of the websites' opinion. It can only be personal experiences and observations of people.

You control how you respond and react to what other people do, but you cannot control their words or behaviors.
This all goes back to the central belief that a lot of folks here have that they are entitled to NOT be offended by what other people say/do.
Most of the offensive posters on QL do and say the things they do to get a rise out of people. It thrills them to be able to bother people so much. You guys are simply feeding that behavior by inflaming this issue and not letting it die.
Ignore them and they will lose interest in pushing your buttons.

Not quite true Veris, seems that PM has been banned....
Genesis is the voice of reason here. Its been blown out of all proportion. In most other countries QL would just be another site that is ignored most of the time and the people's comments as irrelevant. However if it happens on QL its big news in the wider community!
If they ban QL what next? Secret police listening at coffee shops to make sure people are not saying anything bad...
"QL is the safe haven for Islam and Qatar haters"
I agree with AbuAmerican 100%..
The irony is that in spite of the very disparaging remarks that were made on Qataris, all the users who indulged in the mud slinging have got away with it...
they haven't been banned... and haven't heard anything close to a real apology from any of them...
again the pen is more powerful than guns, as the saying goes. if real names, real identities of every QLrs will be written and available everyone will be more responsible.
though i have this question in my heart, if real names will be there and available, is the nation ready, matured and responsible enough in dealing with comments, suggestions, complaints and even criticism?
progress
the rock, you were asking about the honking. it is called noise barrage. in my country, we use this to protest gas price hikes. in this region, i guess it is used to celebrate national day, or a football game win.
Now, on the street that day, I did feel that all the energy could be channeled into something more constructive. I think the youth needed an avenue to display their love for the country and do not have many avenues to exhibit this other than just honking on the streets. On the other hand, i also noticed the emiratis doing the same on their national day (on youtube). So what is it with the honking? some background to it? I don't understand.
Anyways, bottomline, people were trying to be creative. So, if there is a competition of sorts organized somewhere
e.g.,
-for the best decorated car,
-daring stunts - with safety measures inplace (referring to the guys sitting on roof tops :)
-dancing
-horn music :)
i don't know, just thinking out loud, but something like this could be organized to channel the energy into something more constructive.

Just one more thing... GROW UP!!!! What country is not criticized? What goverment is not criticized? What people or race is not criticized???
If you want to host games, to become a real country and be taken serious by everyone... GROW UP!
Kids run away crying or get mad when someone laught at them or tell them off... not a grown up person!!!
I wonder why xxxx id is still valid in spite all the controversial threads she posted got locked/deleted!!
Freedom of speech??? HAHAHAHA.... it was a joke, wasnt it???
Well... to be honest, I wont even start commenting on this... it is like a little spoiled child when being critized or told something is not right....
Really... it is almost funny this kind of reaction.
done it. He shouldnt be in QATAR forget about QL
Whatever... people may or may not like about libertarianism, it is the opposite of racism, often making itself very unpopular by taking a pro open borders stance.... A core value of liberty is to take each person as you find them.. regardless of religion, race, creed or color... It would be unfortunate for anyone reading such member’s comments to reject/ban QL on their basis.
What idiots??? who?
why dont you name them?
Qatar Living is accountable for everything so long as they keep these idiots posting here without banning them.
how some of the young locals behaved during their national day.
I think the criticisms on that thread now deleted were out of order. I for one, enjoyed the festive atmosphere on the streets but had i said so on the thread, some members in their infinite wisdom would have deemed fit to call me names!
Yes, there are always lessons learned and some of the incidents reported should be avoided in future. However in my humble opinion, the language used in the criticism was demeaning and vengeful rather than constructive. Anyways, all in all i trust that lessons would have been learned, both from on the street activities as well as controversy resulting from the criticism.
And ofcourse, QL is a blogging site, an excellant platform for everyone to voice their opinions and simply due to the nature of blogging, the site cannot be held entirely responsible for all content on it.
all the best to everyone.

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur.
Genesis,
In any part of the world, no matter who can go on line and insult others... it’s the reaction to those insults that may or not attribute importance to the issue.
Reactions like the ones we saw tend to be driven by insecurity... If you don't value the source, why give it any attention. By doing so, you are just giving it credit!
The Americans, often make fun of us. Do we care or even give that any credit?! No, we joke about it and we can even joke about ourselves and them too…lol
well, we do realize that QL doesn't just offer insults but insights, it's just a matter of exaggeration and being exaggerated about it.
just like seasons, it comes and go...
^_^
yes I agree with him celebration is a celebration and if the people chose to celebrate this way and the authority allows it ,no one should complain. but if it did hurt or harm someone they should have the freedom to talk about it !
"Superwoman to the rescue"
The site has nothing to do with the hatred and abuses posted by some of the users. Its a public forum and there wil be people with different views in that. Both the threads were blocked too by the admin.
Those Users who posted those filthy comments are the culprits and ofcourse the Mods who let them pass.
Instead of hyping such incidents , please appreciate many positive and great contributions of QL to the country.

QL is o socializing site and is a BONUS POINT for Qatar culture and social life and should be understand as a port-parole of the expat community. If some opinions offended Qatari citizens they should act like mature people and try to understand what cause that opinion, if it's objective or just emotional one, if we can communicate, understand and avoid such problems in the future. Banning the site, deporting the expatriates with a radical opinion, intimidating the members of this site it's a step back for international image of Qatar.
Progress is coming due to a clash of different opinion, different ways to see the future and more important, progress is sign of an smart peoples creating a smart social system. Let's use our minds to create not to destroy!
u're right,s_isale.i have actually seen the transformation.this was a fun place with loads of info and people looking for some good friends to talk to.by and by,the bashing threads started to gain popularity and then religious fanatics took over.it's sad....

QL became famous earlier for its helpfulness to the newcomers on Qatar.
QL has become now (in)famous for its insults...
Way to go................
Nic said Genesis, These things, both the mob's behavior and harsh criticism on line, happen all the time at any given place on planet earth!
Not really! Not even in Canada. Criticism is one thing, calling an entire nation as savages & barbarians is blunt racism
As I wrote in my first post this got blown out of proportion.
no wonder my Pa never buys this newspaper.Gulf Times rocks!they are atleast more mature not to publish some immature stuff like this.this is just like the 3rd grade newspapers back home that publish some scandal for their newspaper to get a boost in sales....duh!

Genesis,
These things, both the mob's behavior and harsh criticism on line, happen all the time at any given place on planet earth!
People complain with or without reason and the www is nowadays a free and unlimited way to do so. People should be aware of the bad and the good resulting from this freedom and should be equipped to value and/or filter as per their ability to digest the material.
That is why it's called world-wide web!
The way this article reacts to it, it's childish and patronizes and downgrades Qataris. It almost portraits them as the child, victim of the naughty playground mate, who complains to the teacher, instead of engaging or ignoring the naughtiness.
you think mods are doing their work.
They are eager to delete posts which is written in languages other than english.
when insults fly thick and fast they are nowhere to be seen.
i know that only too well, hun'!and i am careful never to speak anything against the nation or the govt. here.it sure does get the creeps out of me when i see people posting harsh comments so openly!used to wonder if they have their bags packed to go home already! :-S and anyway, there are so many other things to talk about other than just pointless bashing around....whatsay?
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
svelte_saggi, anything you write here are being noticed and monitored. A friend of mine who worked for the local school, few years ago she wrote something about the school that involve certain people. Few days later she is sacked and sent home ... So always becareful with what you write on QL :D
Oppps! i knew this would happen...
on the brighter side,i'm pleasantly surprised that what we say on QL is being noticed....so in spite of all the banter, people have begun to sit up and notice what i call call as the 'International Voice of Qatar' :-D YO! \m/
Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car. ~ Garrison Keillor
"some of us may be bad"...???...correction my friend, some of you,JUST LIKE some of ALL the rest of us ARE in fact bad,for starters, accept that as a fact..."worst (sic!) things happen in the West"...this isn't about East vs. West, why the hell does everything have to come down to "western culture"???...this guy says he's had an "American education" all along & yet he chooses to go down the easiest "you western infidels" road,so much for quality education eh? *wink*!..."it might be committed by a handful of minors"...??? & again,it WAS committed by,a little more than a "handful" & not ALL minors, had this "American educated all my life" guy accepted that fact,i'd have real respect for him,"may have been by a handful of minors" is pretty much trying to sweep most of it under the carpet, that hardly serves any purpose now does it?...
it's really unfair to blame the site for the individual opinions of a few of its members.and we know that the MODS are doing a great deal to keep this place clean. To quote the official QL disclaimer "Qatar Living is an online community for everyone living in or interested in the State of Qatar. i hope more people understood that.
and regarding revelry....yes,it was true that some young boys did take matters out of hands but like someone mentioned,it would be helpful to think of what happens in our own countries on new years' eve and other such festivals.this was nothing compared to that.so before piling abuses on an entire nation due to the misdeeds of a bunch of people,QLers who post derogatory comments ought to think a bit,IMHO.

“We are all for freedom of expression but that does not mean you cross boundaries and heap insults on us,” he said.
^^^ A nice oxymoron.
Freedom of expression without much freedom ..
But I thought the celebrations were great. If you didn't want to be a part of the celebrations, if possible, you should have avoided roads leading up to the corniche.
There were similar "celebrations" on the corniche road between 12 and 3 am to mark the start of the Doha Asian Games 2006.
As it is there aren't a whole lot of things to do in Qatar (relatively speaking), so I think 1 day of unrestricted celebrations is fine.
People in this part of the world trust internet forums as a prime source of local news. QL have gained the popularity among locals & expatriates in the past few years. QL in some way have helped to spread the racy stereotype of locals being ignorant, arrogant, bad drivers & lazy. Which have developed prejudice even among new comers.
To many Qataris, They have not ask for all this nor do they have any hand in the influx of foreigners. To them their beliefs, culture, & way of life have changed in less than a decade only to adjust for new comers. And in return all they get is racial sarcastic criticism, off course there would be a backlash
"Understanding is not bashing and insulting. Constructive Critisim is allowed, but harsh language and behaivor is NOT. QL is full of Qatar-haters who just do there best to insult the people here for no apparent reason!
We should just allow these people to keep on insulting us and DO NOTHING ABOUT IT?
I wont."
"The website should at least apologize and ban those members who were responsible!!
There should be moderators who immediately delete the posts which insult and spread hatred.
Nothing wrong? well see about that. hahaha"
----> Halawala, you should hunt down everyone who talks bad about the country and dare to criticize the national day ... After you find them, you can send them back to wherever they come from.
High time most people realised that the cyber space is not real life...
For some, its a place to express their true views
For some, its a place for split personalities
For some, its a place to seek attention
For some, its just too real that they take everything so seriously!!
it's not QL's fault, as any country having their own handful of minors who do exaggeration on national day, well it would also be the same as QL having handful of idiots who exaggerates back.
its just a few of those, not the whole QL though, and its not even backed up by the community, but then again, you still have the right to be angry.
^_^ imho
This article is caused by a complex of inferiority, insecurity, immaturity and short sighted vision.
Where on earth a newspaper would publish an article about a child complaining to their parents about another child's naughtiness?
The article is pretty much the same!
This is hilarious and ridiculous!
Halawala: Any posts on QL have hundreds of people put their comment. If you find more people who support such post, there is obviously something wrong with it...& yeah, not all or even most of them are Qatar-haters,, just search over on the top right box & go thru the various posts u'l find the same people praising Qatar & overwhelmed with their love to this country.

The 'website' has done nothing wrong - idiot!
Understanding is not bashing and insulting. Constructive Critisim is allowed, but harsh language and behaivor is NOT. QL is full of Qatar-haters who just do there best to insult the people here for no apparent reason!
We should just allow these people to keep on insulting us and DO NOTHING ABOUT IT?
I wont.
well said genesis..
I think this is blown out of proportion .This is not about Qatarlivning!
QL is a site where both locals & expatriates share useful information about Qatar. In addition to organizing many community services throughout the years.
The ND thread was deleted by MODs, Many have expressed their nonacceptance on what's written already
In Local internet forums like Qatarshares , many locals also criticized the unfortunate behavior of many during the night parade. I do agree with you that many comments by posters were racial , but it only shows complete ignorance of certain individuals
Demand to block the site & then what? People will always find a way or another to vent.
Only with understanding of one another can we overcome this clash of cultures
