A female student in Doha

Zaria
By Zaria

Hello to everyone.

I am a 20 years old female student from Bosnia, planning to continue studying in Doha. Now, I read quite a lot of threads, but I still need answers directed to me :).

My questions would be:

How safe it is for a girl to go there alone (accommodation in the student dorms) ?

What about clothes? I know it's hot over there, and im not really used to cover parts of body (i do wear skirts, shorts, tank tops, sleeveless dresses etc.), could that be a problem?

What are the men like? I really have lot of men coming up to me wherever I go, and I'm not sure how those things run in Qatar. How do men behave with women?

What is the amount of money I could live with there considering I don't pay for the accommodation, food and electricity?

And the last question, what are the prices of cosmetic services :)?

I would really appreciate any answers, I'm really interested in this matter. Thank you.

P.S. I dont expose my meat. I simply cool down when its hot by wearing tanktops/skirts/shorts etc. So, men, cut down the "its all your fault" comments.

I forgot about this thread. Anyways, i gave up on the scholarship long time ago. Too many restrictions, I'm not sure how long I would handle it. Someone tried to give me lessons in Islam, I saw it somewhere above. I know my religion, quite well, I may say. And its my personal issue if I will follow it or not. But thanks for the time you spent trying to get me to the right path.

And thank you for all the answers and the welcomings, but I'll rather stick to Europe :)

Are you muslim from Bosinia, if so any muslim from any country has to follow principles of Islam. What religion teaches in regard to dress, lifestyle, drinking, or sex. A good mulim fears Allah, not autority, laws or people. No fear of Allah no body can stop youfrom indulgence you are questioning about. For that matter no other relgion teachings allow such. If you are muslim, spare your free time to know about Islam and insha Allah you will be guided. May Allah guide you not the people.

Below standart = those you don't look at all and even turn around immediately :)

Standart= you look at and maybe stare a little bit :)

Above standart= you stare and look at them constantly :))

There are 3 kinds:

I believe Doha is 100 times safer than any major city in Europe (esp. Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Madrid, Milan,...) and America.

Crimes against women are unbelievably high in these places. So just because some guys offer friendship or stare at you doesn't mean Doha is not safe. Where in the world men don't approach girls, or don't stare? :)

Women population is less in Doha then other places, and this is why even the below standard girls get a little bit attention, but this shouldn't give them any right to talk about men as flesh eaters.

Sure no one was approaching you in your home country, since there were plenty of other beauties people were looking at :) Doha has spoiled you girls :))))

About safety: It is very safe generally but it is safer for big fat girls with clubs or guns!

Other wise you may face deadly(I will eat you alive) stares. After talking to a lot of women I came to know that too much exposure to these kind of deadly stares(especially from Asian labors) are extremely fatal. It will lead to erosion of the skin and make your skin vulnerable to ultraviolet rays............CANCER!

It's in my week routine. Bosnia and Balkan generally are part of the world where people enjoy going out, wasting time, hanging together, having fun :)

We have something called coffee culture, that means that everyone has coffee with friends every single day, sometimes more times a day :D.

I do it too, it's in my blood. No matter how busy I was that day, and how tired I am, I can't miss the coffee. Foreigners who come to Sarajevo usually say it's the only place where they've seen all cafes full in the middle of the day.

Bosnians usually party on weekends, mostly fridays and saturdays, but many of us don't have a specific day. I go partying whenever I have time, no matter if it's tuesday, monday or saturday. For example, last night I had a blast in a local pub till 5 am :)

Hey guys, keep it at down low :)

I'm ok with the rules, obviously I don't like some of them, but I never expected things to be perfect in the first place. I'm simply asking all these questions because I wanna know where I'm going. Maybe it's gonna be a bit easier for me to adapt since I'm a Muslim, so I do understand the culture. I'm turning 21 in december, so night-life-isolation won't last for too long :).

What usually happens is that someone reports you. If they find out you stayed for x amount of time with someone you aren't related or married to, and someone has complained about that, then it's assumed you were having illicit relations and you are deported and in the most extreme cases lashed.

And no, it doesn't just apply to Muslims.

zaria, i never been to any uni in doha, but i spent my life here the last 10 yrs.

i live with my parents so i dont know the safety and the environment in college, so i cant say anything about tht.

about the DOHA DRESS CODE, its hot over here during summer....u can go tank tops but at least u have to hv something to cover so its not widely open. beside u can choose any cotton materials tht suitable during tht season and its available in doha.

The problem is not coming from wht u wear here, the problem here is the peoples minds, the stare and the treatment tht u will get from ppl around you.

my big concern is tht theres alot of workers here who are far from their wifes and sure they have need tht r not fulfilled.....the only thing im afraid if u wear these kind of dress tht u just mentioned "(i do wear skirts, shorts, tank tops, sleeveless dresses etc.)" it will motivates peoples do bad things to you. but all i can say try to minimize the "openess" in way of ur dressing for ur own safety, but at the end its up to u.

since u told us tht theres alot of men coming up to u wherever u go + with the dress code u used to wear, lets say the number of men who will follow you increase to more 50% and maybe half or most of these peoples mind are bad. since u know, most of gurls and womans here are cover their body, so it will b something new if they see gurls who open.....some of them considered tht as SHOWS for them to see. and the gurls and womans here will staring at you and talking bad stuff about u.

SIMPLY...i consider tht as part of jealousy cos they cant do the same like u did. but for me, whtever ur choice, you will take the risks.

men behave differently based on their education level and how OPEN their mind can go. open minded men can understand tht but wht about the none educated and close minded one? but dont worry, theres alot of foreigners here also, they adjusted their dress code well and can blend with people here. but the last thing i heard about the rules to enter the mall in doha, i dont think they will let u enter the mall or maybe they will gv u fine for NOT DRESS PROPERLY .......but i duno if the rules change or not. you will know it by urself soon as u come here.

for everything here u have to pay except for breathing,...free air available. if u want to stay in dorms, i think they already include tht in ur expenses when u pay the money for the tuition fee and all.

things getting bit expensive here than before. but still affordable.......but i dont know the difference in the bosnia currency to qatar currency so i cant say its very expensive or cheaper here.

for ur last Q, u can say doha is heaven for cosmetic. everywehre u go u can see cosmetics shops with different brand available in doha. start from the expensive one till the cheap one. so dont b afraid ......... u WILL STAY PREETY when u stay in doha. ;)

I work at QU and I have been to Bosnia! beautiful country :) so pm me if i can help you.

qu is a segregated uni and so is the accommodation so within that framework you will not be mixing with boys.

there are minority of female students who are uncovered on campus.

don't use your photo as your avatar

Olive i'm flagging you as offensive! I for one pm'ed her already...no, not asking for friendsheep but telling her to take her pic out due to obvious reasons you've mentioned. i am offended though for your whole hungry "cat" staring at a piece of meat comment. :p

Zaria whatever you do don't email any of the men who respond to this thread. They're just looking for sex. While Qatar is very safe in regards to theft & crime it is not so safe in regards to sexual harassment of women. The fact of the matter is that this country as a 20 to 1 ratio of men to women and there are A LOT of guys out there (especially the one's who will PM you from this site) who are a bunch of desperate losers. I'm sure there will be people who disagree with me, but you need to keep your wits about you, don't talk to strange men who approach at malls or when out and about, be careful when taking cabs if you've had a bit to drink (I recommend you always go with someone) and do dress modestly. By modestly I mean no tanks tops, no skirts or shorts above the knees, no skimpy dresses. Even then they're still going to stare at you like a hungry cat stares at a piece of meat.

QU is a sexually segregated Uni so you won't be interacting with men to much, but just be aware when you're outside the Uni.

H_M_H thank you so much for your answer, you have been very helpful! And I will write that e-mail address down for the case I have more questions.

Yes, I know Qatar differs Bosnia in many ways (climate, society, life standard, religion complexity etc..), but this is a great opportunity to become a part of a normal settled society, plus, Qatar university is a great university and the scholarship offer is great.

The only thing I was really concerned about is the safety of me as an alone uncovered female over there, but I feel much better about it now.

Do you know anything about the life in campus, cos I couldn't get too many information about that on the uni site. Are students allowed to leave campus anytime? Are men and women in the campus allowed to hang out and are there any like common places in the campus where men and women are allowed to mix ?

Thank you both for your answers once more.
