Tradition or Religion

Why does this world get mixed up between local traditions and religious practices?

For example, Female genital Mutilation ( FGM ) has nothing to do with either the Holy Quran or has any other justtification with regard to health and cleanliness. On the other hand, it may be harmful to the child.
Despite the above, it's still followed in many muslim countries of Asia and Africa.

Why? Why? Why?

It can't be part of religion as that would be the same as saying god made a mistake when he made us

circumcision in males and genital mutilation in females have their origin much before the holy quran and it was a local tradition in africa. it was probably based on the concept of sacrificing a part of the body to god to please him..

i have read that the prophet (mpbuh) was also circumcised and thus, this cannot be a part of the holy quran.

this was not prohibited by any religion and thus it carried on from there..

I don't think this happens in Qatar though.

There is nothing in Islam which states that the Female Genital Mutilnation should be done. However, this tradition is still followed in many islamic communities and it is totally wrong.
