Lower fine proposed for running a red light
The Advisory Council seeks a review of the traffic law
By Nour Abuzant
Staff Reporter
The Advisory Council has proposed a review of the traffic law with a stress on reducing the current fine of QR6,000 for jumping the red signal, a member of the council said yesterday.
According to him, the draft proposal recommended a significant cut in the fine and suggested that the penalty be structured around a more practical model based on the circumstances of the violation and the number of times a motorist committed the same offence.

Alfa lolz.......driving in the wrong directions?
Are they serious in running red light areas?
Instead of working on the improvement of the law enforcement by the police (speed, seat belts, dangerous driving), they work on alleviating the penalties of the worse aggressors and transgressors!
I was not being judgmental either.....that's why I asked you, my friend :-)
btw...normally one expects replies in response/relevance to the other comments made earlier in the thread.

KHATTAK, i am not referring to those people who commented here... do not conclude my friend..

chadqa....have you really read all the comments on this thread before posting?

Why alot of people are worrying about the traffic light penalties? jumping red light etc... just abide the rules & that's it! period!

Do you honestly think that people here drive the way they do because the fines are so affordable? No. That's like saying people don't murder because they are afraid of prison.
Have you got any idea of a driver's salary in Qatar ??? It doesn't exceed more than Qr 2,250 . And they do send majority of their salary to their native. And do you think they are gonna let go Qr 2000 off their salary ??
NO.... DO NOT REDUCE the penalty charges for jumping red lights... In fact, increase the charges from Qrs. 6000/- to Qrs. 12,000/-.......
Xray...No it wont be unfair. I see people from everywhere over speeding, changing lanes without using indicators, honking for no reason at times, not wearing seat belts, talking on mobile, parking at a 'NO Parking" place etc... but its just around QR 500 for these violations, so most dont bother much about it.
But when it comes to jumping over the red signal (Of course, mainly in Round Abouts or Intersections where there is no Camera/Radar)..... its only "Them" in 95% cases. Rest of 5% include other pals from the same region or those who were born & brought up here.
Just my observations... can be wrong though. :-)

LP good one... lol
Last day I saw a guy having to pay a fine of QR.18000. I guess that would be for jumping three red lights? I will not mention nationalities, but he was driving a Land cruiser ;-)
I personally feel it should not be reduced. 6,000 is a big amount for most people here. But 1500 to 2000 may not be..
P.S:- no prizes for guessing the nationality
JJ
I clearly said "usual habit"......
as this change is for WHOM?.....
isn't that a discrimination too!
Only Qatari Landcruiser driver will be happy they will have more encourage to break the red light? I wanted to suggest they have to increse the fine to 50000 and every two kilometers cameras to be installed to reduce accident/killing.
ISn't it seems a bit unfair saying only 'Qataris' have the habit of jumping red light..
these move is to appease Qataris, those have usual habit of jumping traffic signals :)
Reconfirmation are welcome!
Good News for the Red Light Jumpers..... "THEY" were complaining of the higher penalties since long. Infact, "They" have indirectly helped the poor drivers having low salaries.

intentionally or unintentionally (because theyhave the recording of such incident). If it is obvious that it was done intentionally, then fine to have a stiff penalty. But what about honest mistake?

Good initiative and worth consideration.....
Few people so much scared (fines) from SIGNALS they slow down their cars almost a kilometer away from traffic lights :)
in my life long experience of driving, how come i have never ever jumped a red light??
they have to learn to be more careful and it can only happen with more strict penalties..

I know many expats who are working in different companies as Driver. All the day, their job is to go here and there as per job description. Usually net pay at the end of month is in a range of 3000 - 6000Qr. Although expecting to be careful all the time but once in a while because of any unseen reason, if jumps a red light, then all his salary will go to penalty...
LP really more deaths so considerate of you!

a pickup tried to run a red light at the corniche/grand hamad signals and in the process rear-ended the car beside me.
All this has been happening despite the QR6,000 fine. How much more if they lower the fine?
Be careful!

They should remove the red lights then there will be no violations. Just a few more dead people. But that's okay. They'll die anyway.
do u call tat LOW ? :(
atleast 1-5 Qrs would hav been better.
It should not be more than QR500. The amount of QR 6000 or the suggested QR1500-QR2000 is not reasonable.

insane... then, people will think it's okay to jump a red light since the fine is not that significant.. :/
