Ravi Shankar awarded honorary doctorate
World renowned sitar player, composer, teacher and writer, Ravi Shankar, receives the University of Melbourne’s highest honour, the degree of Doctor of Laws, from the university’s Chancellor and chairman of the Australia India Institute, Alex Chernov (right) at a special conferring ceremony in Melbourne yesterday.
The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws is awarded by the university to recognise people who are distinguished by eminent public service or outstanding cultural achievement. Other recipients include the Dalai Lama, Aung San Suu Kyi, Mary Robinson and Germaine Greer.
