Post-dated cheques are to lose their legal cover in Qatar from May 13, according to a report on Sunday.

Up until May 12, any cheque presented to a bank in Qatar could not be cashed until the date specified. However, from May 13, any cheque will be cashed by the bank on the date it is deposited, according to a report in the Qatari daily newspaper The Peninsula.

Some lawyers, such as Mohamed Ahmed Al Ansari, said the country was not ready for do away with post-dated cheques and have called for an extension to the original law.

There's no way I'll have 6 months worth of rent in the bank by May 13th. I'll have 1 month and that's all he can have.

Make sure only the right amount is there in your bank at the time and nothing extra. But then, bounced cheques also end up costing you money....

Well then I guess he'll be kicking us out. Cause he won't be getting the money. :P

i guess the bank in Qatar will start to get more 'civilized' and introduce direct debit ?

By deepb• 21 Mar 2010 12:56

Post-dated cheques are not used in the US as well I think. You could always set up an automatic debit system with the bank. But the way business dealings happen in Qatar, this is going to become a big mess.

no, but really, i am wondering, what's the problem? they don't know how to handle post-dated cheques? or what's their issue? and really, how tenants will be paying the rent? any clue?

One of the worst law I ever saw in my life, really illogic, it is possible only a country like Qatar where there is no human rights.?!! You will not get legal protection also anymore for this issue.

The stupidity of this law shows how stupid the law-makers are.

By qatarisun• 21 Mar 2010 12:35

and why is this nonsense?

what will happen to post-dated cheques given for rent 1 year in advance? how people in the future will rent their accommodation? NO post-dated cheques are required? Just pay monthly? Or landlord will deposit all 12 cheques at once?

i have a cheque with the date section empty.. it was basically left upto me to fill whenever i wanted.

will it be accepted if i write the date on it.. will a different hand-writing or colour of the ink matter?

By Raana• 21 Mar 2010 11:40

Yeh, this has been passed last year and the date was 13 May or April '10 to enforce.

What will happen to Car Loan, Home deposit etc.
