Traffic signal

Hi,
For pedestrain crossing at most of the signals, there is a box fitted to the pole. When person wants to cross the signal they press the button and wait for the signal to go green for pedestrain crossing. I wanted to know what is the purpose of this as the signal changes even without pressing the button. How does it help if we press the button?
Regards,

Depends on which Traffic signal you are talking about. If you press the button you will the Green man a little longer when crossing.
