Happened like this at Mangalore air crash?
A very close shave for a B737-300 at Toncontin Honduras Feb 2009. You can see the plane is fine at the final approach but it takes forever to touch down.
The pilot overshoots the touch down point. Finally it touches down towards the three fourth mark of the runway. A plume of smoke as brakes are hit hard with full reverse thrust. You can see the planes tail almost upright as it screams to a stop at the very end of the runway.
Did something like this happen this morning at Mangalore??
Maybe the tyre burst and it went out of control?

They were vectored on an ILS approach for runway 24, landing distance available was 2450m they landed almost halfway down the runway, they tried to initiate the go around procedure but it was too late as the aircraft skidded off the runway down into a wooded valley. Aquaplaning has been ruled out since the runway was not contaminated, passenger list showed 169 people though 9 people failed to board the aircraft. This accident reminds me of the airfrance A340 accident at toronto's pearson international, high approach speed and a late touchdown almost halfway down the runway. The pilot in command was serbian with over 13000hrs of flight time, started his flying career in 1979, the co pilot was indian based in Mangalore and knew this route very well. whatever the cause i hope they find it soon so that we can learn from it and make flying safer.

Some news out on the crash. The cockpit voice recorder had been found this morning and the inside story is that the Air Traffic controller gave the go ahead to land 5 minutes before the crash.
But ATC is heard advising the pilot to abort this landing just seconds before it did and the last words of the captain were---" overshoot---overshoot"

tone down a little on the speculations, it doesn't give respect to the dead pilots (actually, even if they are not dead). Verbal speculation is okay but written speculation do injustice to all victims including the pilots. Right or wrong, it will never return the lost lives!

But thats first class. can't afford that!
But imagine a passenger from economy asking for free champagne after being served other liquor very generously!
i remember my only flight with the etihad...official trip in the first class ( only once in life )
man, had a time of my life drinking champagne for some three hours served by a cute indian hostess..
Not all. I have seen a few generous ones too. They gave some people sitting infront one too many and and they didn't stop blabbering for the rest of the journey. One of them even wanted champagne for free!
Only flew by Emirates once, was waiting at Dubai airport for 3 hours and I spent them very judiciously so had no problem in the flight ;)

WK, i have seen the Emirates flight attendents are so mean while serving liquor..they just dont want to give the second helping...you have to literally irritate them before they reluctantly serve you the second time...
I make it a point not to drink inflight.
That way I will be alert incase of some emergency,and not mistake the airhostess for a lifejacket or the blanket as a parachute!

rishi, there are special earplugs available that will make the pain during take off and landing go away. You can find them at BOOTS in Villaggio.
Yes rishi, swallowing action opens the tube connecting middle ear with throat and thus equalizes the pressure inside and outside the eardrum and thus no/less pain. If no water, just swallowing own saliva helps a lot.

No but you need to check it out. I have heard having a small hole in the eardrum too causes this.
rishi, little sips of water or sucking on a candy and swallowing action should help.make sure you have no ear infection before travelling by air.

edifis, if you dive straight, keep your feet together touching each other..
Check for minor cold blockages in the ear. These are immensely painful when landing. You might be having a minor infection in the ear.
drmana, give me some medical tips of how to avoid the ear pain while landing..somehow, i cant stand the pressure changes..
I got hurt down there, when I was careless while diving into the pool last Friday.
Normally me dive smooth into the water with minimum splash!
Low cost airlines tend to have lesser experienced pilots who become better by scaring the wits out of passengers.
Not in the case of today's crash. The pilot was very experienced with more than 10000 hours of flying and 2500 hours on Boeing. He had landed many times ( 19 times is the story) at this Mangalore airport.
Had a horrible landing experience while travelling from Dubai to Doha last November via Etihad. That made me realize that landing time can be dangerous as well.
I remember some of the Sahara ones were like that. Once landing in Mumbai I was convinced it is curtains for all of us.

It seems like the plane is going to shed its wings and the wheels may come loose.
after this incident, i am sure all indians will pray more during the landing..
we generally pray during the take-off and not during landing..

Just a horrible thud is quite ok edifis. I have been in some which shudder, tremble and vibrate when the full reverse thrust is on. The older aircraft on domestic routes in India. Well it is quite an experience.

Sometimes there is such an horrible thud during the touchdown it seems that the plane will break!
Maybe but such a tragedy. I believe a family of 15 was travelling on this and all died.
For the next few months all passengers will have quite a jerky landing experience as all pilots will touchdown within the specified point even if it means landing with a heavy thud!
But an horrible jerky landing is better than overshooting the touchdownpoint and toppling over a cliff.
the pressure on the pilots to make soft landings may be one of the reasons why the craft overshot the touchdown point..
Spoils and reverse thrust should do the job but here the tyre burst and it immediately swung to the right.
There is another report that says that the pilot probably realizing that he had missed the landing spot by a long distance increased power in order to overshoot the whole runway and abort this landing. But the plane was too far down for that.
its said it was drizzling...so aquaplaning could be a likely reason..however, the spoils could have done the job incase the tyres dont brake..
According to information this runway is 8000 feet which is international standards and boeing 737 required only about 2500 feet to land. Though on a table top the length of the runway is more than sufficient.
So many theories are being thrown around like pilot fatigue or a miscalculation. Here the tyre burst as it was braking hard as in this video and veered towards the right and the wing hit a concrete pillar of a tower . This tore off the wing and the aircraft slid below breaking into two.
it could have been the case, you dont want to overshoot the touch down zone on a runway that ends with a cliff. Aquaplanning could be the culprit, the FDR/CVR will shed more light on the cause of this tragedy. May the souls of the victims rest in peace.
there should be some extra space beyond the runway for emergency situations. they say the air-pad is small and like a table-top...i wonder why they have not made it as per the international standards.
this needs to be corrected as soon as possible..
Late touchdown is confirmed Rishi. Between 2000-3000 feet beyond the landing mark. After that everything went wrong.
so many possibilities..
late touchdown, overloaded aircraft, slippery pad due to rain, short runway, late or not opening of the spoils, exhaust gas outlets not redirected..
Just a likely scenario edifis. Could have been strong burst of wind that swayed the aircraft. This could happen anywhere
Shocking. I will never go to Mangalore by air.
