Good Guest/Bad Guest?

Khawaga
By Khawaga

I need some advice and I hope this thread won't go too far astray with the hijacks before some folks weigh in on the issue.

I am staying with some friends while I look for a new accommodation. The friends I am staying with are... well, they are messy. It's not a matter of hygiene, rather there is just a bunch of clutter and a mountain of unwashed clothing. They don't have a maid service.

I am not complaining. On the contrary, I am very grateful that they are letting me stay here. My question is, I would like to clean the place and give it a really good scrub. And do the laundry. I think it would be a decent way of showing my appreciation. Or, could this potentially be taken as some sort of commentary on their housekeeping? Thoughts? If I clean the place, does that make me a good guest or a bad guest?

FU: six loads down, dishes washed, bathrooms cleaned. Once I finally finish the laundry, I can do the floors.

if your hosts a male, oh yeah! im sure he'd love it, no doubt

but if its a female on the otherhand.. i dunno, some might get abit too sensitive about it perhaps?

(for the record, this aint no sexist statement)

It would make you the best guest ever to be living with them. The flip side is that you will be expeceted to do this more often.

On the lighter side, wish i have a guest like you, and then i can afford to mess up as well. LOL

Try it out dude, like someone said above, not at one go..

leave the cloths. clean th kitchen first ,after couple of days the living room , then the bathrooms..Lets see whether this enlighten them ..Even after you finish all thses in couple of weeks , they dont show any change in their attitudes.. dumb it. Its not working. :)

Suggest to hire a part time maid and pay for her salary.....considering a messy house with huge laundry bag.

Guest is Good ONLY when its for short stay; Long staying guests are always BAD!

u can help thm & show how how neat evrythin will b.. but convey the message tht V can make OUR home clean & tidy together, rather than I will clean OUR place alone...

you are a very good guest :)

and since you are concentrating on that mountain in the kitchen, well....you can ask them first if it is ok and be sure you will do it one time only, i mean doing it on a regular basis will not be good as drmana sez, if it will become a habit , noooooo waaaaayyy :P

A guest is still a guest... :)

Depends on your friends and depends on how long you will continue to stay there. Normally any person leaving a mess around will not be bashful but you will get a sheepish smile with --I never got the time for it. It will become more 'expected' of you. My take is --don't bother.

I don't think you own this many clothes. Actually, *I* don't even own this many clothes. I've already done four loads and I've hardly made even a dent!

WK: I promise to never do your laundry.

But seriously, would you leave a pile (it's really more of a mountain... are there mountains in Qatar?) of it in the kitchen? (that's where the washing machine is.)

By anonymous• 25 May 2010 13:04

I don't like it when someone else does my laundry, that's all.

Why is everyone so concerned about the laundry? There is a mountain of it!

your a good guest......... but you need to get permission from them so that your intention as well as your action are good.....

Khawga can you be my guest plzz? lol

I think its not a bad idea if you like cleaning the mess... but they might expect you to do it regularly..:)

drmana: I hadn't thought of that. Well, I don't mind doing it while I am here. But I probably won't volunteer to come on a regular basis to do it after I move out!

Dot.Com: well, if I am still here when my friends move, I may call you up and ask if you have a spare room (and a mountain of laundry that needs washing!) :-D

By nomerci• 25 May 2010 12:29

Hmmm, it may be better to take them to a nice restaurant to show them your appreciation.

By anonymous• 25 May 2010 12:28

khawaga, dont do everything on a single day..you can scrub the kitchen platforms etc. lightly on a regular basis and keep them clean after you have cooked. after a few days, it would look clean. they wont notice the change all of a sudden and thus wont have a chance to feel bad.

as far as laundry is concerned, you should only do yours or can take their concurrence if you want to dump all clothes in the machine together..

i'm just a lazy bum

ur idea is superb, u can do it for your host if u have free time.

By drmana• 25 May 2010 12:20

Well, I don't know....It may become their habit to leave it to be done by you. Showing appreciation is good but not letting others take your efforts for granted. Thats all. But I don't know your friends, so I may be wrong.

dot.com: if I ever end up staying at your place for awhile, I will be happy to clean it for you.

Yep....Very strange for me...I would never do that by myself...we all share a place we all do things that are common to all, together. Else I would settle for a maid, the price of whom to be shared by all equally.

By Khawaga• 25 May 2010 12:16
