Whats life like in Qatar
Good Afternoon all, I am new on this forum and would like to make some contacts and friends for our potential move to Doha.I wondered if people could please give me some feedback on what i have been offered for work regarding lifestyle and possiblitiy of saving money.I have been offered a position working a a very reputable Oil and Gas company which has the earning potential to earn around $95,000 american Dollers.I myself am a 38 Year old male who will be bringing over my Wife and newborn baby.My baby will only be around 3-6 months when we first arrive.I have told they will give us living accomodation within some compounds which are nice?? my question really is what would it be like moving out there for us ?? easy to make friends?? nice places to eat?? Any places to play golf? Cost of Living ??
Look forward to speaking to you soon.

I am moving there alone - will it be difficult to make friends?
heLLo to eveRYone=))
Hi
I'm moving to Doha in August and have just read all these
comments on how boring it is!
Why is it so boring?
bunty u r from which part of india ?
qataryankee, you cannot pay $27 for a full meal in Doha "at a decent restaurant". $27 for a full meal can only be paid in a junky restaurant. At a decent restaurant in Doha you pay at least $70-80, which is I am sure much more expensive than in US.
Rent is doubled comparing to North America.
Gyms are 10 times more expensive here.
Alcohol in the bars is ridiculously expensive. Beer is like $12-15! While in NA is about $6-8.
Even booze at the only (monopolized) store in Doha is more expensive than the same booze in stores in NA.
Clothes sucks and expensive.
Lack of basic services.
What is cheap is a gasoline and slaves.
But.. $95 Grand + accommodation is Ok, as there are not too many places for spending money anyway, unless you will get drunk and make drunk all your friends in some bar every weekend. Other than that you will be able to save. and hey, it is fun to get into some adventure for a while.... so welcome to Qatar!
Cost of living here is less than in the US, with the exception of housing. If the company provides the housing, you should be doing OK. All of the housing the gas companies provide that I've been to have been pretty reasonable. Don't think I ever pay more than $27US for a full meal at a decent restaurant. You'll find pretty much everything you want or need, maybe just not in great amounts. Hey, gasoline at the pumps is like seventy cents US per gallon! I top off my SUV with top premium gas and it's like less that $15. If you buy alcohol at the bars or nightclubs that are attached to the hotels you will pay a fairly monstrous price, but you can buy booze for the house at much more reasonable costs. Enjoy!

Which part of INDIA u belong to??
you can check this
Depends on your lifestyle and the kind of people you would like to relate to. If you have the option to stay put where you are or any other place to move even at a bit of lesser salary (if that is the criteria for your move), I would suggest not to make a move here.
Come with an open mind and PLENTY of tolerance. Electronics are expensive, customer service non-existent. Driving... I'm still to find words to describe driving here... on the upside it's better than in India! There is food for every taste, compound accomodation with facilities such as swimming pool, gym, clubhouse, tennis court etc.
There is an excellent mums group called 'Mums the Word' where your wife and child will find plenty of playgroups and activities to join in and meet other mums and todds in the same circumstances.
Any questions just ask away, we're here to help :)
its great!
The cost of living would be probably be like living in a larger city in the States, the only saving grace is as everyone else seems to agree, theres no time to blow the money you make and nowhere you would want to do it.
I got some pretty good advice from a co-worker, try to slowly discover the different 'attractions' around Qatar. If you dont spread it out this place gets old fast.
If your housing is provided in addition to your salary, you should be just fine. BTW, I find Doha much more expensive than the US.
Mandi
all forgot to ask, $95,000 per month?!
Well for those who dont have satisfaction in life..here is boring! But i hope you will enjoy here as expat....your goal here is to work and earn a descent living for your family. right?
LP - Driving can be quite boring here if you follow all the rules and others follow it too.
Bunty - You'll be fine as long as you are not in the rong place at the wrong time.
Life in qatar is sometimes happening, sometimes boring, sometimes exciting, Plenty of food chains are here in doha.....Electronics are cheap as they are duty free....
Driving in Qatar is the only real entertainment. Lots of thrills. Do I survive or not?
...driving in Qatar can be stressful.
Depends on what happens in your bed, though.
what would it be like moving out there for us ?? - Depends. But mostly it's a pleasant experience if you are moving voluntarily :)
easy to make friends?? - Yes. Specially within your community.
nice places to eat?? - Plenty of them. Right from Chillis to South Indian ones.
Any places to play golf? - Yes. There's a good Golf Course and they serve beer.
Cost of Living ?? - There's a section on CL here on QL.Here you go:

Look forward to speaking to you soon - Send me a PM and we shall do that ;)
All the Best!

Life here is toooooooooooo boring...............nothing else
