Yeah. It's a source of guitars, second hand smoke, and porn. Basically, a one-stop shop for all your Doha needs. :o)

I am searching for a decent guitar for the past one month but apparently you can't get one here.

Ok now for a less cynical answer.. Plenty of coffee shops here where people generally go, if you are a smoker, go to the souq and try sheesha.. outdoor is strictly prohibited in this weather, even during evenings it is 40 plus temperatures but you can go to the corniche to breathe a bit of fresh air. Driving is an interesting experience here as it is a bid to stay alive at all times. You can try bowling or pool at a few places if that's your thing. I have two left feet so no idea about dancing.

Whining and complaining about everything in Doha is another popular game :)

I sorta agree that Doha is a nice place to visit, but a sucky place to live in. :P I still remember the daunting guitar-hunting days *shudder*

*ducks while chalk, tomatoes, chairs, tables are being thrown at her*

Anyway, on weekends, few of my buddies and I go to malls, corniche etc. Visit the Islamic museum, they have interesting stuff there. And I heard Dukhan has a beach or something.

if you have your family i recommend City Center its almost a place of everything in one roof!

If your alone...seaside of cornice while sitting in upstand paralell to the sea. But dont forget to light a cigarette to be sure when you fell asleep hot flame will wake up you! hehe

If you with your wife...i dont have experience yet for that situation hehe!

epicurean: you can borrow my doorman if you can't get a practice Indian from the IA.

WK: just don't go so far as to dousing yourself in bad cologne...

Boating and softball are simple enough here. Not sure about surfing, but you can try kite surfing in Dukhan and other places. Your new favorite watering hole is call Irish Harp, congratulations! And grilling is simply a matter of befriending someone who lives in a compound with access to a grill. Done and done.

MedicineMan1975

Well...surfing, going to my favorite watering hole called "World of Beer"...playing softball...going out on my boat, hanging with friends....grilling (I'm in a flat here so no where to put a grill)...etc...

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm not a huge shopper so the malls aren't a big attraction for me. I love the outdoors when the weather is nice so this will take a bit of getting used to. I like to go out dancing, try new restaurants, movies... I think you are right. All these things are available locally. I guess it will just take some time meeting new friends.

Exiledsaint... how big is the small Indian you balance? Could I perhaps use a practice Indian?

MedicineMan & epicurean...this place isn't that bad ...just step out of your house with an open mind... and you will find lot many things to do...you can get into routine, friends...cant say though much about a permanent family if you mean that...:)

The best thing on the raods can be the very innovative ways of driving something like reading newspapers, legs on the dash board etc etc ...so look out for them once a while and have fun ...:)

epicurean: What sort of things did you do for fun back home? I'm sure you will find most of them are available here. Don't listen to the nay-sayers like WK who, apparently, can bore himself to tears. You will get out of this experience what you put into it. With a little imagination, you will quickly feel at home here.

epicurean we all make mistakes being human so I came here. There is a small matter of Exit permit required to leave this country so I am stuck here. Been here 15 months, contract finishes in 272 more days, counting down :)

Interesting...

Of those of you who go to drive-thrus, the corniche or coffee shops, how many of you are married and how many are single?

Of those of you (whyteknight and MedicineMan1975) who long for the day you can leave, how long have you been here? Also, if it's so awful, why did you come and why do you stay?

MedicineMan1975

I concur with you whyteknight, I count down the days when I board the jet plane home to Florida for good...can't wait to see the waves of Cocoa Beach again...grab a surf board...have a beer in one of the beach side bars...

There is no vaccination developed yet. Once you are in Doha, it is sure to catch you. There is prevention but no cure

Drive thru your favorite food chain and park your car at cornich area and make sure you are in good spot of view. Take a walk along with others in seashoreline, take a very deep breath and owaaaaaaaaaa!

Are you trying to say that you wish you had a departure lounge at home and that is why you go there and stare longingly at it? Or are you just homesick?

To the Airport, I go and stare longingly at the departure lounge for a while and then come back and sleep.
