Soory, but another salary question

WelshinDoha
By WelshinDoha

I am British and live in the UK. I've recently received a job offer for Doha that came with with an attractive salary package.

Although the package was pretty good for UK standards, the high cost of living in the Middle East (judging from research on the internet) meant that I asked for a higher salary. I received the renewed offer on email today. Please take a look and see what you think. I am married and my wife will be moving with me.

Salary: QAR 255600 per annum (QAR 21300 per month)
Housing:QAR 168000 per annum (QAR 14000 per month)

Total: QAR 423600 per annum (QAR 35300 per month)

Also included is health insurance, return flights for my wife and I, a one off furniture allowance of QAR 24500 and an interest free car loan of QAR 60000

Please let me know your thoughts.

Many Thanks.

We do the trick electro mechanical work, and we fix messes, so the folks that are good at that stuff cost a heavy premium

QR60,000 will get a saloon car but not a decent 4X4 which is what most expats go for. It also won't cover a second car for his wife.

It all depends what you're looking for. If you're the kind of person that goes out into the desert then you'll be hard pushed to find anything for 60K.

It'll get a couple of second hand saloons or a second hand 4X4 though.

Its a good deal, take it.

i think thats a pretty good deal!!!

what field you working in??

but yeah for TWO people... you'd be living quite well

and the car loan is decent i dont know what the above was talking about... cars have dropped heaps... so you can get a decent one for that price....

wish you all the best

If you're happy with the salary then that's the main thing. As I said, we live here easily on less and we have a couple of luxuries (a horse & quad bikes)& 2 small kids but we don't save much each month.

If you're coming over to save up loads of money then you might find it hard but if you're coming for the experience and to try out a new culture and you'll be happy with whatever you save then I'd say go for it.

Thanks very much for the replies. It's comforting to know that many of you think that this offer is fairly good.

We don't have children, but the company does offer

an education allowance of QAR 15,000 per annum for up to three children in Grades 1 to 6 or QAR 20,000 per annum for up to three children in Grades 7 to 18 years of age.

They also offer one months basic salary per year as an end of service bonus.

I don't want to say who the company is, but if it helps, my UK NET salary after tax, but before housing of course is: QAR 12000... so after paying rent on the house I have QAR 8200 left over. for groceries, bills, car etc. Even taking into account that we will lose my wifes income we will still be much better off with an abillity to maybe save some money.

The offer is good but could be better. As others have said, it depends on your job & your experience. Me and my family live here very happily for less then that but we don't have an overly expensive lifestyle.

The monthly salary is more then enough to live on for just 2 people.

The housing will get you a decent 4 bed villa on a compound with a pool or a 5 bed stand alone villa without pool in a popular area of Doha.

The car allowance is not alot. It'll get you a saloon car but nothing special and you'll have to get a second *ar for your wife as public transport can work out expensive.

You haven't mentioned anything about children/schooling. If you have children or are planning on having children then make sure that your contract covers schooling or nursery fees as these can be ridiculously expensive depending on which shool you put them in. That's only assuming you're planning on being here for the next 5 years or so. Nursery for a baby can be QR2,000+ per month and school for children can be QR20,000+ per term.

welshindoha: Like others have pointed out, we need to know what designation you have been offered. Because the Housing Allowance looks OK, you could be in a relatively posh place for 14k a month.

Also, an interest free car loan of QR 60K is decent, though some of the nice cars definitely cost more. But, how are you supposed to pay it back is it in lieu of a car allowance or what?

I think a call on basic can be made once the designation becomes much clearer.

We keep a business development guy in Qatar, and we send 12,000 US monthly(43,800 QR) obviously we are talking a little different scenario, but I am surprised how quickly we go through the money. Again we are doing business development so there are a lot of lunches and dinners out, but housing in Doha is a little rough if you have people that expect western standards for accommodations. I must say I am surprised to hear that less than 500,000QR per annum is good money, our senior engineers won't consider the heat for less than 1,250,000 QR per annum. We do well, why the desparity between the owners and the senior level staff compensation?

Looks like a good offer in terms of pays but will depend upon your qualifications and experience.
