Qatar expat gets 80-yr-old speeding ticket
A Qatari resident was shocked to discover he had a speeding ticket for driving over the legal limit…in Saudi Arabia…in 1928, press reports said.
The man, an Australian who preferred not to be named, knew it was an error as he had never been to Saudi Arabia and was not even born at the time of the violation.
“I was slightly worried when I saw Saudi on there, especially considering I have never visited the country...Perhaps it was something my granddad did,” he quipped to Qatar's English-language daily, Gulf Times.
The man was first alerted to the 150 Saudi riyal (40 dollar) ticket when he received a text message from Qatar's Ministry of Interior’s "Metrash" service.
A quick check of the ministry's website showed the 80-year-old ticket, committed with a 2001 model car.
When contacted, a Traffic Department spokesman told Gulf Times that mistakes “happen a lot of the time” and that a quick visit to its headquarters would clear up any problems.
