What do I need to know when moving to Qatar to work?

Hi there,

I shall be moving to Doha towards the end of the year and I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers or advice before I leave of what to expect or what to do. I'm a British male aged 21 working in the Aviation Sector.

Thank-you

We just got here a few week ago. Before signing on the dotted line for a place to live be sure to check and double check everything is in working order, including the door handles. Remember, not everything that glitters is gold and if you think it's too good to be true, then it is. Nothing every gets done urgently or on time but it will be done SOON! Maybe!

Arrive as early as possible for your medical because it will be a long wait. I suggest you take a book or your ipod and some water. Don't expect anyone to spoon-feed you with information (this isn't the UK).

If you already have things at home that you think you will need then I suggest you bring it with you. All the high street shops from home are here with the same stuff so bring yours as it's more expensive here. Bring your DVD's and books (nothing naughty)

DRIVING: No matter how good a driver you think you are you will not be prepared for driving here. There are no discipline at the round-a-bouts (or lane discipline for that matter) and if you manage to get across in one piece, then good luck you might live to drive another day.

I suggest you make friends as soon as possible otherwise you will be spending a lot of time on your own.

The malls are very quiet, no loud music and hardly any chavs . There are lots of hypermarkets like the ones you see in France selling everything you get in the UK as well as things you have no idea whether to eat or display.

Smoking seems to be allowed everywhere (even where there are No Smoking signs).

You will definitely get home earlier from work unless you don't want to.

Alcohol is available with a licence or at the five star hotels and restaurants. Drinking and driving is not allowed.

And you already know it's HOT ( like standing being a lorry with it's engine revving).

If you are adventurous and don't let silly things worry you too much you will love it here. Just remember you are leaving the UK for a good reason so don't start missing it.

Good Luck

Just remember ... it's not Britain!

Things happen slower, expect fewer liberties and a few more restrictions.

It's HOT.
