I just read that I can take a bus to Saudi from Qatar. Is this true? If so, will it take to me Riyadh or another location? I am curious if I can make a quick weekend of visiting KSA as *an American citizen*. I could take a plane, but this also seems interesting to me.
SAPTCO buses go from close to Sana roundabout and go to Al Khobar and Riyadh. It's around 8 hours to Riyadh, so as above, a weekend visit will be spent entirely on the bus.
However ..... You will not get a visa!
There is no such thing as a tourist visa for KSA. Only work, business, transit and Umrah visas available.

If you are thinking of weekend tour, better you take plane. Journey is not short and passing border takes some time very long time for checking.
Travel by road to Saudi is not safe in terms of road safety. If any accident happens, rescue is remote and may take longer time.
