Qatari firms prefer Indians

genesis
By genesis

Indian workers are the top preference of Qatari companies followed by Egyptians, reveals a survey conducted by the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI), representative body of the private sector.

Keeping this in mind, the Chamber has urged the government to classify jobs according to nationality. In other words, some jobs could be unofficially reserved for certain nationalities.

well, there are a lot of factors I guess... the supply and demand (there are a lot of Indians available), a lot of them have western degrees which really are highly valued here (I am not saying - right or wrong, it is just a fact) and yes, they do accept salaries lower than westerners (for comparable level of skill and responsibility). About the complaining bit... this I think is to do with personality, not nationality :o)

I think the article is based from the labor sector as preferred workers. Statistically true most construction firms acquire their man power from certain nationality due to cost.

Indians are highly skilled. but these companies don't hire them for the skills so much. they hire them because it's a whole lot cheaper. it quite unfair how some of the companies pay not by skills but by nationalities. where i work Pakistanis and Indians get paid the lowest even though generally ( of course there are the few lazy ones) they are more hard working than the other employees. then the Egyptians and Jordanians are next. then it's the people from the west. and quite frankly most of the people from the west on my job are doing minimum work required or down right lazy but they get paid the most because they hold a British or American passport.

'As an employer, this is great-work gets done without the constant absenteeism, bickering and complaints and if it is at a lower cost, that is icing on the cake.'

you clearly don't work in my office!

I do agree to the less complaints part. I expect my employee to screw me over on daily basis so if he does that, it's expected. If he doesn't then it's all good.

It is great that most of the respondents have compared Indians with Western counterparts. Yes, a firm will have to pay less for an Indian(with an Indian passport) employee with the same skills as a western employee.

Interestingly, I have seen more corporates hiring Indians from western countries- here the salaries paid are the same as that paid to any other western national. So, why not get more Arabs from western countries- they speak the local language and have the benefit of western education?

I partly agree with bea_7 that managers who are Indians prefer employes who are Indians. But I have seen Arabs prefering to hire Indians.

The reason is simple- an Indian generally is good at what he does, will rarely be late for work(parties/get-togethers are usually over the weekend), will stay later than his Arab and western counterparts and his expectation from his employer is much less than that of an Arab or a westerner- so he complaints less.

As an employer, this is great- work gets done without the constant absenteeism, bickering and complaints and if it is at a lower cost, that is icing on the cake.

I have to agree with Indu - I think this is more to do with the fact that these nationalities are 'already in' and they do hire 'their own'.

That's why I have to disagree with someone who said above that it is because of high education standards in India. It isn't... if they were educated, they would know that hiring one nationality in the company is risky and it does not support organisational development... :o)

One reason is most of Qatari firm heads are Indians & Egyptians and they prefer their family members to work with them. That also causes to increase the number of Indians and Egyptians in Qatar.

Good article. One worrying aspect is the issue of "regularising" runaway workers. Will this lead to their issues being resolved ?

As far as Indians are concened. Yes, there is a high availability of skilled / non skilled workers in India. In addition, Indians adapt easily.

However, it also has to do with history- as Indians have always had a strong "influence" in Qatar. I worked for a short while in Abu Dhabi and found that since many companies' HR units were staffed by Indians , then it usually meant that preference was given to Indians.

Genesis, I know and agree with that. But are the reason for which an Indian is hired in west same as the reason here?

Good to know...But I wouldn't like to work for a foreign company on a lesser salary!

Certain professions are dominated by Indian employees ( whether here or in the west). I've been to factories by leading manufacturers in most western European countries. The vast majority of certain professions related to Engineering & IT were Indians.

If you look at the picture as a whole, the education system in India has set high standards to meet the requirements at international level. Education has ever been looked at Indian culture as a holistic effort since time immemorial. The students practice it more holistically, whatever be its field. Be it Medicine, Engineering, Electronics, Humanities or any subject one is likely to get proper higher education in any of these fields.

The higher education is currently controlled and maintained by the University Grants Commission in India. They keep the quality of education on part with the international standards, which is a heritage India acquired since the British occupation.

Since then all fields of education remained up to date in quality and in quantity. Medical education, Engineering education or any type of professional education be it, it remains so even now. Professionals pass out from these institutions have been tested to maximum to excel in thier respective field and I strongly beleive that it makes a difference..

I've been to many recruitment campaigns to India , the Philippine , and Indonesia. By far, Indian professionals are the highest ( and I'm talking about the 15-25 k QR range of salaries)

I believe this has to do more with low cost involved to hire them with equivalent qualifications and expertise as those in western countries.

Hope one day salary scale would be same for everyone with similar experience and qualifications irrespective of Nationality.

Indians cost much less and have technical knowledge as well (Most of them anyway), can communicate in English which is pretty much the official language used here to conduct business.
