Kathmandu things to do.
I was looking for a get away place during Eid holidays and chanced upon Kathmandu. I have no idea about the place but I have booked my tickets. Anybody been there or any Nepalese offering any tips and tricks for the first time visitor. I intent to stay in the city only and explore the near about areas that are less than 4 hours drive away.
is it me...or is it true tht u can get reeeeeealy "high" over there?... and i aint talking abt the mountain type of high!
Quite true cg
As they say about Nepal - "once is not enough"!
Thanks flyingAce. Yes, the trip was great.
Sorry, CG..5 days were too short and I could not meet Ian as I checked my email very late but i will be back there again soon...inshiallah.
Have a safe trip shapil... Enjoy, and see the wonderful approach to the valley.... :)
Thanks CG and everyone else...I am leaving tomorrow morning...will somehow reach Thamel from airport and then see how it goes.
If you see my post above, I have just proposed the "little gems hostel" as one of the places he can visit, and have not solicited for any form of donation. I agree that he is going for a holiday, but does that mean he can not visit hostels with a cause? It was just an idea to help him see the nepal which tourists normally tend to neglect.
Drmana, I do not mean to offend you, I am just clarifying my point here.
Shapil, you can cash in Traveller cheques in any bank in kathmandu but you will be better off carrying USD in cash, which is accepted widely in tourist areas.
Thanks Drmana...i am usually not a big donor but like to help out 'in kind' at such efforts. Since I will only be staying in kathmandu and the near about areas for a week, maybe i will get some time to do such things as well.
I have a more mundane questions: Can I easily convert Amex travellers cheques of USD there in kathmandu?
CG28, shapil is going there on vacation. Please don't mix this with something else. Even if this is a noble cause, I don't think that issue should be brought here.
Shapil, go and enjoy your vacation. If time permits and you are genuinely interested, then only consider other things. DO NOT GIVE/DONATE MONEY to anyone or any place unless you are sure that the cause is genuine.
Hope you have a good time in Kathmandu.
CG28 done.
will be in Kathmandu when you are there. I will email him and inform your interest so that he can arrange you to visit the hostel. Can you PM me your name & email and I will get you in touch with Ian and the team in Kathmandu?

CG28...educating kids is a noble cause. I am interested, whats next?
visit out little gems hostel. you may check www.help2educate.org and inform me if you are interested!
Thanks to everyone above for your valuable and timely suggestions. Looking forward to eating some dal bhat with chutney and earning some good memories of kathmandu.

thanks saved me looking for the info again
honestly try that hotel is was great...really helpful and clean and quiet :)
just ask your taxi driver or ur hotel people to help you. Go for "NCell" - thats the easiest!
Thanks Ghazalz.
Thanks Drmana.
CG28 thanks for your kind gesture. I can readily give you the undertaking but is it possible to get a new sim cheaply there without much hassle?
Pokhara City will be the best place for you to visit .Have a Nice Trip.
until he gets a local simcard.
shapil, i have my nepal pre-paid simcard with me in doha which I can lend you, provided you sign an undertaking for returning it safely upon return.
Never use Qtel prepaid sim in Nepal. It would cost you a fortune...personal experience :-(
thamel can be noisy with loud music playing and it might disturb ur sleep. consider hotels in kings way or jyatha area (they are both walking distance from thamel).
if u have a pre-paid qtel sim, it has roaming in nepal.
enjoy ur trip!
Shapil, don't worry, you wouldn't need my help. There would be tourists all around at this time of the year. Your number won't work there. Buy yourself a spice mobile sim once you get there. You can freely browse internet with that. I would be quite busy with family commitments during my stay there. But if you need any help, PM me in QL. I would check my mailbox frequently.
Yes Drmana meeting you would be a great help . I will reach there on 15th. But how to contact you as i dont think that it is so small that we can bump into each other nevermind the fact that we have never met. I can PM you my number here but not sure if it will work there.
Brit, it would be cold in morning and evening now but it would be chilling cold after a month :-)
By the way.. Isn't it going to be rather cold at this time of the year ?
Enjoy your trip shapil!
Good move....do bargain with taxi driver in airport though as they would ask for a huge sum at first.
Check the following link where oryx has advised about a hotel in Thamel :
http://www.qatarliving.com/node/1428790
As this is an impromptu trip so nothing has been planned..Hence, I am thinking what to tell the taxi driver once I am out of the airport...based upon my research so far from Drmana's link Thamel is the area where I can find reasonable and a number of hotels to chose from. So, I am planning to go to Thamel from Airport and take a hotel there. Good move...bad?
Yes! don't miss a night stay in Nagarkot and view the sunrise. Pokhara won't be within in 4 hrs drive but you can take a flight of about half an hour to get there.
Make sure to take your warm clothes as mornings and evenings would be quite cold now.
By the way, I would be in ktm and then in pokhara after 5 days. May be I would see you there.
Nagarkot is a hill statill just less than 2 hours drive from Kathmandu and is very famous for sunrise and sunset sightseeing purpose. Also, if you are lucky with the weather, you might get a good view of the himalayan range from Nagarkot.
While in Kathmandu, you shouldnt also miss bar hopping in Durbarmarg and Thamel.
Check this webpage for more practical info: http://wikitravel.org/en/Kathmandu
Bear in mind that its cold in Kathmandu now, so have some warm clothes with you!
Enjoy your trip!
Visit Pokhra...too
View the lovely Annapurna mountain peaks...
Kathmandu is colder than Pokhra....
I had been there 10yrs ago :)
drmana, Sonam...they might give u some hints !
In 4 hours, you can visit the 3 cities inside Kathmandu i.e kathmandu, bhaktapur and lalitpur. Visit the 3 Durbar squares, take a flight over Mount Everest, eat traditional foods etc.
Have a look at the following. It would help you:
