Body of Indonesia maid found in Saudi garbage

JAKARTA - Indonesia demanded an investigation Friday into reports that a domestic worker was allegedly killed by her employer in Saudi Arabia and thrown into dumpster — the second case of maid abuse to emerge this week.

Too many, human rights groups say, face slavery-like conditions, torture, sexual abuse and even death.

Indonesian Minister of Labor Muhaimin Iskandar said an embassy team was dispatched to the Saudi town of Abha to look into allegations the 36-year-old maid, Kikim Komalasari, had been killed by her bosses.

Her neck was slashed and she had severe cuts to the rest of her body, he said.

"It's shocking to hear this ... it's beyond inhumane," Yudhoyono said, adding, however, he was encouraged so far by the Saudi government's quick response. "I'm hopeful the perpetrators will be punished according to law."

The report came as a team of Indonesian officials headed to the Mideast to seek justice and medical help for another maid, Sumiati binti Salan Mustapa, who has been hospitalized in the Saudi city of Medina since Nov. 8.

The 23-year-old's employers allegedly burned her, broke her middle finger and cut her lips with scissors.

Earlier this week, New York-based group Human Rights Watch urged Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait to do more to protect domestic workers in their countries, saying a string of allegations point to a "broader pattern of abuse."

They were responding to reports that a Sri Lankan maid working in Jordan had been forced to swallow nails. Another maid employed in Kuwait claimed her employer drove nails into her body.

"The wanton brutality alleged in these cases is shocking," said Nisha Varia, senior women's rights researcher at Human Rights Watch, which called on authorities to investigate claims promptly and bring those responsible to justice.

@ s_isale,i thought this bit was clear but apparently it's not,so to clarify, this type of abuse wherever it is in the world but it happens MUCH MORE here in the middle east & it DOES NOT get reported in the local press...the Bombay couple story was reported in a quarter page article in the Times Of India,i 'm safely assuming this story didn't appear in the local press in Saudi?...

I believe there are good Saudis, just as there are good Qataris, good Emiratis, good Omanis, good people from all nationalities - however, why aren't the good people making sure the bad people are behaving in a civilized manner according to the laws of the land? That's the real problem here, good people are allowing bad things to happen by saying and doing nothing.

arien if you have connections nothing will ever happen.

It's a cultural issue. The employers are taught from a very young age not to view their servants as people, therefore they treat them no better than they would treat a dog.

to the country who supplies the labour. It is the unbalanced distribution of wealth and power I find as the root cause of this problem. These inhuman treatment of other less-privileged people is just a product of this unbalanced economy. And it will continue to happen unfortunately!

gadarene/arien - so nothing happens in India? This kind of thing has been happening in India for a long time.

take this incident -

Powai: A couple in Mumbai has gone missing after they allegedly attacked a 13-year-old who worked for them with an iron.

The couple reportedly decided to punish their underage domestic help after their young son got burnt while she was ironing the family's clothes.

1- employing under-aged as maids.

2- Torturing them as well.

Sadly, they don't really care. They know that as far as they have the energy resources and strategic value , most countries will "forgive them their tresspasses"..

The fault lies also with the countries who supply the labour. They are so concerned with foreign exchange that they don't really care about their citizens.

Why cant this Saudis, Kuwaitis, Jordanians and others treat people with compassion and dignity. Would they love to be treated the same cruel way they have been treating the others. Maybe invaders coming over the borders once in a while will give them a experience of the same like has happened earlier to some of them. I hope they understand and realize that all this tragic and sadistic stories coming out from this countires gives a bad impression about them to the world community at large.

always happened yes..but to this extent and so many cases? I don't think so. See I can tell you about my own country. SL is a small country and news always spread fast. Years back murders used to be committed and they were always reported about too. but they were few and far between. However in the recent past we read daily of murders and rapes being committed far more than in the past. Older people bare witness to this. So,God knows best, but it sure seems that crimes have increased though of course so has media coverage.

By nomerci• 20 Nov 2010 11:57

Fathimah, those things have always happened, all over the world. The only difference is that now we hear about it due to the media.

You must have noted that the widespread of murders and that too often senseless and unfathomably cruel crimes are widespread all around the globe today. Children killing parents, parents killing their children, kids killing each other, employees killing maids, maids killing employees etc! Of course my statement "signs of the hour" is an Islamic belief (though recently I heard certain denominations of Christians believe it too.)that as the world comes to an end we will witness a epidemic in murders and other crimes. IMO that is exactly what it seems like when we hear day in day out such spine chilling stories of demonic crimes.

For most countries who send a number of their people as housemaids on those mentioned ME countries, better stop sending or ban sending labors (housemaids/nannies) to these countries.

@ FatimaH,"signs of the hour"??? if i may be so bold as to ask, which "hour" are we referring to here???...this abuse of domestics has been going in the middle east for DECADES,it's just that more incidents are coming to light now, thanks to the internet,i would say press, but there is no such thing as free press in this neck of the woods...so yes, this must be longest "hour" in human history...

When I hear time and again tales of such inhumanity and oppression I do think like WK..truly God tests us Muslims that the land of the two holiest cities in Islam should have such evil doers residing in it and that too with much wasta and wealth ensuring they get away with it! But again as Muslims we also believe these are signs of the hour.. widespread of murders and crimes! Hope and pray the culprits are found and justice is meted out =(

Cruelty beyond comprehension. The sad thing is that the embassies are usually powerless. In this case, the minister said "We’re planning to give cellphones to all migrant workers,” he said. “That way, at least, we can communicate instantly.”

A futile gesture. You can only communicate if the maid is allowed to use her phone :O(

Normal logic or humanity is not applicable in Saudi..

It's unfortunate that these people are blessed with the holy sites of Makkah and Madinah
