We, the student body in Qatar academy are organizing and trying to gather laptops from anybody who is willing to donate a laptop. We will then take those laptops even if they are not fully operational and try and fix it and put in it media content that will hopefully make the life of workers in Qatar easier. We ask you to please donate any laptop that you can. For any questions please ask questions on this forum and we will try to answer them.

Giving the workers entertainment is an old fashion colonization technique, entertain the people and they would not care about the problems....The main problem is give them adequate salary. I heard to most of them that they were offered in their respective countries higher amount compared to what they receive when they start to work here. So if you give them laptops, naturally they'll accept, but up to what point will they be happy? how will be these laptops distributed considering there are so many workers here? By the way, most of them don't need laptops because they don't know how to operate them, one suggestion, try giving them mobile phones with camera, video, bluetooth and internet capabilities. 100% guarantee they'll prefer it over a laptop.

We realize that most of the workers who will apply for a laptop with us will not have an internet connection, that is not a problem, we have found a work around. We will take the laptops we receive and fill them up with media content such as appropriate music and movies.

I think before we consider expanding the program and bringing the issue up at higher places, we should prove that it works and works well. As of now however, we are trying to get the program initiated and running smoothly which is slowly becoming a realization. We are planning to make more people aware of the program (Qatar Living was a method), this will hopefully provide us with greater support.

It is already a great achievement if guys like you NOTICED the miserable conditions many laborers here have to endure. Your action as a consequence is also pure in intention. However, with a powerful name (Kuwari) on you, you might be able to bring up the issue at higher places (higher than QL). Maybe that will make a real change?

Dear All

I think you are overlooking the fact that we do not have the capability to improve worker salaries or even lifestyle. However, what we can do is provide them with a form of leisure and entertainment. Hopefully this will help them feel appreciated within the community and not neglected. therefore what we are trying to do will not only help entertain workers, but hopefully aid in creating a community with greater appreciation for workers.

you would then provide them with internet connection?

I agree with KP, give them higher salaries and better accommodations...that would help them with self-esteem and not to feel desolate(sp).

Reading everything on this page I feel likewise at expert's genital herpes testing - uneasy, uncool and being afraid for the last procedure

It would be better to give them higher salaries, better accommodations, and to allow them to enter the malls without restrictions. Once you grant them this social status you can think about giving them laptops as an extra.
