Racial discrimination? Blind or uneducated?

SallyDeepu
By SallyDeepu

Last week I walked into the MANGO store in The Mall to purchase a quick christmas gift for our nanny. I was in a rush as my older child was in school waiting to be picked up and my youngest baby was crankie as she needed to be nursed. I still stood patiently in que at the counter with my infant in my arms and there were two customers in front of me. The lady behind the counter, accepted both their purchase and when it came to my turn she just walked away without even excusing herself or requesting the other cashier to look after my purchase. I was obviously surprised at such a behavior and immediately asked for the store manager and the filipino lady at the other cashier tells me that the store manager is the same lady behind the counter who rudely ignored me. She is either a racist or she has poor eyesight or uneducated??

Mr.Sean C -i expected like this only from you.Because i have read lot of your nasty comments here, You have allways negative approach in your small brain. Further you dont know, how to respect others by words also. You never grown up..buddy..still your behaviour is childish,,,,,,,..In QL you are wandering here and there to provide rubbish comments.

I love to eat mango not to wear them on my body. Why didn't you eat the mango from the mango shop. Maybe that is the reason the sales lady didn't tend to you....... because you went to a mango store to buy a T-shirt. So I guess next time you will go to a Pyjama store to eat a pyjama! Right.

I purchased some house hold articles in LULU/Airport 0n 23.12.10 and went in "Q" to cashier, and when my turn comes the cashier is a Kabayan lady and one item dont have bar code and gave the item to other kabayan man to check the rate. While i was there, the advise given in this thread came in to my mind and i delivered a friendly smile to the kabayan lady and wished her " Merry Christmas".She didnot smile back to me but looked me as trash with expressionless face.So i understood that we should not waste a smile and wishes to unknown persons and dont get insult volunterily from others.

I am not discriminating any nationality, but the behaviour of the kabayan should be noted as they will respect westeners only. yes.I noticed that the same kabayan lady delivered friendly smile to the next man since he is a westner, and he is the only one man behind with me.

Sean -C don't comment worst ,but provide your comment based on humanity.

so you stood by the check out counter, expressionless till she swiped all your items through the bar-code scanner and then after like 5 minutes (when she discovered the item without the bar-code, and gave it to the assistant to check, meanwhile holding up the busy queues 2 days before Christmas) you suddenly recall advise from QL to smile and greet the lady.... so you spring up and smile and wish her merry Christmas...

You have any idea what she must be thinking... "STAY AWAY FROM ME, YOU WIERDO!!!"

Spontaneity was the key here, and that was missing, just so you should know!

(Someone else would have kicked your teeth in for that grin)

Did you notice that you're the only one in 70 other responses who said that? Why, do you think it would be more literate of me if I screamed my lungs out at that shop manager or threw the tshirt on her face?

The sales ladies in the store were quite helpful, its the store manager we are talking about here.

If you read clearly I appreciated the other cashier for eventually helping me out, I did not just make aware the arrogant Shop Manager.

Education empowers you to stand up for yourself, how you choose to do that is what matters.

Qatar Living is a forum where you talk about your living in Qatar, and that's exactly what I did!!

wow sally and you're so educated and literate that you could just blurt it out in the open how uneducated and illiterate that saleslady is and your preaching about courtesy?!

By SallyDeepu• 21 Dec 2010 22:55

Training? Does one really need to be trained on courtesy?? Education gives you that so I'd say this lady is uneducated, illiterate. The company is at fault because they should evaluate their staff properly.

Best is when you ask for store manager and they say: Sir he is not here.. can I call him? No sir we can't give you his cell number looooool...

This is when my blood suger level rises and I start screaming until the manager himdelf runs to me out of no where.

I wish I knew why she behaved that way. Its obvious to anyone one that I was also standing in the que and I even had the t shirt I wanted to purchase on the counter for her to bill me so you tell me am I assuming? I would like to be wrong, I dont mind being wrong but this is exactly what happened.

Maybe she did not like the color of my skin or hair or maybe the salwar Khameez I was wearing.

I dont like to generalize and say any one nationality is not good because we are all humans but if you are a senior in an organization and accept a senior position one would expect you are better than your juniors right. If you are so arrogant and rude then what will become of your juniors??

My children's nanny is a filipino and she is such a wonderful person with morals and manners and she loves and looks after my children just like I would or even better at times.

Oryx, the ones in Boots I avoid like the plague. Sadly I have to encounter them at the cash register...in my life I have never seen anybody ringing up purchases slower than those girls.

I general I have no probs with filipina shop girls...I know what to expect. If I really need help, i look for somebody else otr leave. It is sadly common here that they have very little idea about what they actually have in the shops.

Just the other day I went to Salam in the Mall. I wanted to buy some cosmetics...I thought maybe there they know what they are doing....now listen to this. I asked for a product which has a very specific purpose...they gave me something, and after demanding the box to see what this product actually does , as the shop girl said it does not say on the bottle, but it does what I need., I find out it does the exact opposite from what I needed. Had i used it, it would have wrecked havoc with my skin!

I asked that woman what the heck she did that for...she told me the girl that usually mans that particular counter is out for lunch.......

Here I am thinking...instead of applying make up from testers on themselves all day long, could they maybe familiarize themselves with what they are selling???? I guess not.

Ah well...

I don't find the Filipino shop assistants particularly good.

'hello Madammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm'

or

'hello Madam/Sir'

But on the miserable salary the get paid and they way they are treated in some stores like Lulu.....I can't blame them. I think some have to 'zone out' just to get through their day.

The office manager at the Mango store in The Mall is not a filipino, the staff who eventually helped me out was a kind, sweet and cheerful Filipino lady but this arrogant, disrespectful, uneducated lady was of some arab nationality (the kind who has black hair but dyes it the yuckiest blond color available on the shelf)

Filipinos are humble, hardworking, decent, God fearing, CHEERFUL, compassionate people in general. In every nationality you will find some awful people but in general the filipinos are very nice people and like Elegance said they work not just for themselves but to educate, feed and support their parents and siblings.

Why did I not yell back or make a scene? well, its because I dont think a person in anger says the right things. I for one have a nasty temper and I rather not open my mouth at that moment. I dont want to be an awful person as bad as that woman!

As far as I heard, the reason behind taking a shower twice or three times a day is that their skin rotten and smells so bad if they don't clean thier skin every 10 hrs. The type of food they eat, thier skin, and gens is the reason why they should take shower several times a day, or else they will smell from miles a way. That is what I have been told. is it true?:)

I have to say, the shop girls are usually very nice. Mind you, I am nice to them first. I mean seriously, aren't we supposed to be nice to other people? A smile and a thank you are common courtesy, nothing more, nothing less.

And about MANGO, I NEVER had a problem in any of the Mango stores here in Qatar...rather the opposite.Very nice and helpful , especially the Manager in the Mall store and one of the sales guys in Villaggio.

And ofcourse I have many friends from different nationalities, but I never faced any problems.

And I rarely get a bad treatment from anyone though I am an average looking, overweight, unglamerous lady in her late thirties.

May be because I talk and say thanks to every vegetable, fish and meat vendors,I meet in the mall. And I thank the counter staff and the guy who quietly puts the stuff inside the plastic covers.

Just look at their faces, and treat each one as an individual. Scratch their plastic coats a bit and you can see them in their best...

The golden moment of 2010 for me was when my cleaner who comes in for 2 hours everyday said "You talk a lot, when you are angry. But your heart is full of love and concern for everyone.. be it low class or high class"..

I am honoured because people rarely scratch my plastic coating too and see what is inside...

In a certain hypermarket, the Filipino counter sales ladies asked me, "how do you take your tampon out after using?" seeing the pack of OB with me. I understood they had not seen a tampon with the string attached, opened the pack, gave one to the sales lady and said "Merry Christmas" and hugged her.. and laughed my all year brand laugh of HA! HA! HA!...

Every one around looked at us and the poor ladies withdrew themselves deep into their shells.I am sure they laughed hard after going back home. Laughing in the counter might have cost their job..who knows...

And all the Filipinos out there... We love you.. We know it is a hard life out there for you.. God bless your hard work, the way you feed your family back home, your work ethics, your cleanliness, your patriotism, the way you hold your head high whatever the circumstances are...

Merry Christmas!

Me too had this kind of experience in Cinemas in City Center and in Cinema in The Mall, They are always picky and never mind a human was standing before them for with a call.

@ The Mall - The Girl who tenders Popcorn never minds me, even i asked one for me, she is so curious to avoid me and attending other white skins sadly.

@City Center Cinema - The girl at ticket counter showed all her generosity to the people of this Nation and when my turn came she not even willing to smile, said Yes, she just answered my Question, No its not 3D and left the place. Damn crap doesnt have behavior sense.

So both the case shows that they are well responding to SOME people not to the ones identifiable as not that SOME. Every Human must be treated equally at least as a customer.

Sadly in both the cases they are KABAYAN. Please give respect and take respect.

Filipinos do really have proper hygiene hemlata..we take shower two times a day.We don't wanna go out of the house w/o taking shower or making ourselves presentable..even those black skinned people,u would know who have proper hygiene or not. By anonymous• 21 Dec 2010 08:43

I guess its a little bit of everything. But, predominantly the lack of customer care training. I mean think about this, with the sponsorship rule even after 20 years the only this the person at the till can do is..man the till!! (I'm not kidding, I've seen the same set of people at the Yarmook Al Meera for the past 20 years!)

Similar thing happened to me yesterday, I was at Al Meera & one or my items couldn't be read by the scanner, so the lady asked a helper to check the price at its aisle. There is an Arab lady next in line. The friendly Arab lady doesn't hurry.

But the cashier goes, "Sir, shall I bill this on card and can you pay by cash for the pending item"

Isn't a biggie, the item was just 8 bucks, so I'm like, yea..i'm fine with that.

Card goes in, receipt comes out. And the cashier goes.."Sir move all your stuff from the counter and make space for the lady"

WTF?! Ain't I waiting in line for my item? And what do I do moving it? Stand there with all those things held in my hand? lol..then again..I know how the system is, I decided to comeback for the item later...

Al Meera....the focus word for today is..."Customer care"
