DUBAI: In a bid to reform its labour market, the UAE has introduced a new work permit which will allow foreign workers, including Indians, in the country to switch jobs after two years without facing a six-month ban for leaving their work.

Expatriate workers in the UAE who have received a six-month ban on leaving their jobs recently will be able to obtain new work permits from the beginning of the new year, a senior official has said.

The new work permit will be issued only if they have completed two years with their former employers, Humaid Bin Deemas, Acting Director-General at the Ministry of Labour, said.

Qatar really needs workers nowadays specially with the 2022 WC won by this country. Let's all pray that the ban would be lifted up from 2 yrs. to 6 mos. :)

It's an opportunity for both the expatriates & locals. Who wouldn't want that?! :)

On the human rights front, I think it would be beneficial for Qatar to follow the course set by the other GCC countries in regards to the Visa and sponsorship changes. But seeing how money makes the world go around, and everything in Qatar seems to be about the haves and the have-nots, nothing will change. The "win" of the 2022 WC bid further strengthens this country's thought of their policy is the "right" policy. Because why implement change, when you can keep everything as it currently is and get what you want?

Dude...this is applicable ONLY to expats, who work & build these nations... not Nationals & this is a strategic decision taken by sensible, educated, forward thinking & mostly Open Minded think thanks of UAE. So stop boasting about 2022 and think of National Development as a whole. There r more things to this world than SPORTS.

Agree with Mohamed, even though I work in a good company now, I suffered a lot to get the NOC from my previous employer and I had to let go of all my end of employment benefits + late salary + travel allowence, just to get that letter. I hope they change it for the others who are still suffering

For some, the present ban works fine but for many it is not fine! Why should someone work as a slave for an employer for many years if an employee is not willing to work. Hence this affects the career path and ultimately such people have to leave the country and this is one reason that the population of Qatar do not increase and no major movements in peoples life and career!

FOLLOW THINGS THAT ARE BETTER AND DO NOT ASK" WHY SHOULD QATAR FOLLOW"

i agree with binoy.. qatar should follow uae in their decision to lift the ban... this has nothing to do with 2022... it's now the trend in the GCC.. like bahrain... kuwait & uae...

hopefully qatar will be the next country in GCC to consider changes in the work permit system...

started in BAhrain, then Kuwait, then UAE, others MAY follow. It's a good move (the after initial 2 years).
