No shorts allowed at Doha Zoo!

Minoush
By Minoush

I attempted to visit the Doha Zoo today with my daughters. It was practically deserted, only one other car in the parking lot. I go to the ticket counter (passing a male guard) and went to buy tickets (two Arab men behind the counter). As I was paying, an old, mean woman who was also a security guard started yelling at me that I could not enter because I was wearing shorts. (Bermuda shorts that fall to the knee, not Daisy Duke shorts). I said "where is the sign?' There is no sign that says you can't wear shorts, no sign at all about dress code.

There were plenty of other signs about not smoking, not harming the animals, etc.. but nothing about dress code. I got into a huge argument with the woman, and the one male employee told her to let me in, but she started yelling at him! In the end I just walked away as she kept yelling and went to the mall. (Where I had no problem wearing my Bermuda shorts.)

Has anyone else experienced this at the zoo?

I know that dress codes have to be adhered in certain places, and if there was a sign, I would have obeyed it, but it was clear that she was making this up as she went along. All 3 male employees had no issue with it, and there was nothing posted about dress codes.

It's the stinking zoo! Who am I going to offend, the zebras???

A bizarre reply, edifis, and one that I suspect is not entirely serious. One thing I would say in response, however, is that humans who engage in prearranged public fights do so entirely at their own choice.

By edifis• 6 Apr 2011 16:15

Human Fighting too should be banned! It's a shame to have WWF with all those barbarians.

If they really want to fight let the WWF come to the middle east. Atleast the ME is still in the 15th century..so they can have all the fights.

Shanester, yes, sadly, albeit illegal, some of those activites are still pursued.

About the zoo here...I went there once...and will never again set foot into that establishment.....I am not sure about the culture thing...I think it may be that animals are thought of, or viewed different by some people.

I have seen people screaming and running in fear when they see a dog or cat....it is known that some people intentionally hurt or even torture animals for entertainment....but culture, no, I think not.

By anonymous• 6 Apr 2011 16:06
anonymous

@nomerci: I'm aware that cockfighting, dogfighting, etc are still actively pursued in the West, but the vast majority of the population revile such "sports" and they are practised - illegally - underground. The Spanish and their bulls are, of course, an exception, but the tide is slowly turning against bullfighting too. In the zoo, a significant percentage (way more than half) of the visitors were being downright abusive to the animals and enjoying it immensely. The only conclusion I can draw from that is that it is culturally acceptable to abuse animals over here.

By Nic• 6 Apr 2011 13:58

KHATTAK,

Some just don’t dare to type what they think and some have a need to please the establishment's expectations, even if it goes against what they think.

Well said!

If all here were like you unafraid of speaking out, the pressure to change (a.k.a. to progress) perhaps would be more noticeable.

By nomerci• 6 Apr 2011 12:10
nomerci

shanester, not quite true. There is bullfighting, cockfighting even dog fighting in the West. Although, some of it is illegal, it still happens. It is true that people behave differently in zoos than many do here.

I think, in general, animals are regarded more favourably in the West than they are here and in some other places.

By anonymous• 6 Apr 2011 09:41
anonymous

Steering back on track for a second, if I may, my wife was subjected to a verbal bashing for showing a bit of her arms from the same woman when we went to the zoo. As we'd already paid and had the kids with us, she put on a jumper to placate said woman and in we went. No problems so far - rules are rules (even unwritten ones).

What really annoyed me subsequently was the way the zoo visitors disregard every single rule once they get into the zoo, and nobody says a damn thing about it. The worst thing is watching adults showing their children how much fun it is to bang on cages and throw sweets, crisps and popcorn at the animals right underneath the "Do Not Feed" signs. I even saw one guy laughing with his kids at a baboon trying to eat a sweet in a plastic wrapper. Going back to the "which century are we in here?" question, en-masse behaviour like that hasn't been seen in the West since the middle ages, when bear baiting and cock fighting were popular spectator events. If you judge the level of civilisation by how a people treats animals, I'm afraid you're left with one damning conclusion about this place.

So, in summary: if the zoo's security guards are going to enforce one rule to the point of fanaticism, they should at the very least enforce rules that are there for the welfare of the animals to at least the same degree.

Do you think posting this is nice?

"Someone please remind me that we are still living in the 21st century?????"

Unlike Saudi, there is not a fixed dress code here. But people here expect foreigners to dress modestly

Like i written earlier,Dress code differs from one area to another and can be tricky. that area in particular is inhabited by most conservative locals.

In this particulate case, the secuirty women had no right to do so without official notice.

don't act smart, my post was directed to your "oh i'm so shocked they have a dress code here" cynical post while every tourist guide in India has a long list of what a women should wear.

You adjust to the sorroundings. Nomerci lived in Saudi and wore an Abaya. Now heer , she doesn't, but wears appropriate clothing.

No edifis, I do not wear "weirdest clothes". I wear clothes that prevent me from feeling uncomfortable , for different reasons, here.

In other places that would not be necessary.

And since I like fashion, there are, in fact, many items that I would like to wear, but can't do here.

But that simply comes with the territory.

By edifis• 5 Apr 2011 16:17

....raises an excellent point indeed. A trip to the local mall and you can witness some of the new-blood of Arabic women wearing an abaya so skin tight...that it makes you wonder why on earth they are wearing them at all.

My biggest issue was that the other employees had no problem with the shorts. There was no sign (unlike the shopping malls)and if I walked in to that zoo wearing skin tight jeans and a skin tight long sleeve shirt, that probably would have been ok.

I always laugh at the women who wear hijabs and jeans that look like they were painted on them and wearing 4 inch stilletos.

Seriously, who is more provacative: a middle aged mom in Bermuda shorts with two screming kids at her side, or a 20 year old girl wearing skin tight jeans, high heels and way too much makeup, too much jewerly, but happens to be wearing a hijab?

I know that clothes aren't for women to be shown like meat; nice clothes are for a woman to feel good about herself too, not just be stared at by men.

It is just the ratio of 'trendy' stores selling clothes to ex-pats, the majority of people here, who won't be allowed to wear them.

Of course if there were conservative stores it doesn't mean people will definitely go to them, but hotpants? I don't see the point in them being in every major store when you'd get jailed for wearing them.

Dress code differs from one area to another and can be tricky. that area in particular is inhabited by most conservative locals. You should have argued back and threaten to contact officials as long shorts are not forbidden , unless you were wearing a tank top ;)

Expect more locals those days to comment on dress code, after pictures of westerners in bikinis sunbathing at the corniche is widely circulated through social networks, Blackberry & internet forums which offended many.

Still they have no right to do so without official notice. Thus, you're entitled to wear what you like as long as it's modest

I don't understand why everyone is so upset about this issue. You decide to go and live in another country by your own free will, so it makes sense that you try to respect the codes of that country. It seems that some Westerners here in Qatar (I can say this since I am one myself) forget where they live and want to behave exactly like they do back home. Well, you're not back home and it is not the end of the world to have to wear long trousers.

Coming back to the subject about the dress code..... in QATAR, you do not require a sign board to adhere to proper dress code. It is UNDERSTOOD and advised in ALL TOURIST publications on QATAR that you HAVE to adhere to "proper" dress code when in public places in the country.

Now, does a lady wearing SHORTS, come under the scrutiny the term "PROPER" dress code is argumentative... and open to discussion..!!!!

Who is burning the Quran? A Christian priest? Ask a question, if I write the name of Jesus Christ on a piece of paper 29 times and give it to him to burn it, will he burn it? If I write the name of Moses on a piece of paper and give it to a Jew, will he burn it? What they intend to burn is the same. In the Quran the name of Jesus Christ is mentioned with great Honour 29 times and the name of Moses with dignity 129 times, while the name of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon all of them) is mentioned just 4 times. In addition all the 24 prophets mentioned in the Quran are there in the Bible. Make them aware that they are burning the names of Jesus Christ, Moses and all 24 prophets. The problem is none of them have ever cared to read the Quran. My request to them is to read the Quran’s translation in their own language (easily available free in mosques and in Islamic Centers) and then decide whether burning the Quran is justified or not. Contd...

Whatever that priest has done he should have thought before doing this act that in the same book which he burnt had the names of Jesus Christ Peace be upon him, Mosses Peace be Upon him and all other Prophets. By burning the holy book he cannot deny the Oneness of Allah and Muhammad PBUH to be His last prophet. Shame on you.....May Allah forgive you and show you the right path. AMEN

May Almighty Allah guide us the right path and strength to counter such insane people. You burn Quran in your churches how you will burn it from our hearts.

www.HolyQuran.Multiply.com said 'Donot waste time, donot indulge in luxury'

Then what are you doing on QL/

Also your username suggest that you are the voice of the Qur'an. Is this not blasphemy?

An Old woman has more experience in life. But nobody can say I will also live to be Old.

What if her intention was your Well being? There had been Crocodile fatal atack even in an Australian zoo. After all you Understood what the Old woman said, but the Crocodile will not listen to her even if she tells them " Donot eat Minoush".

Here is an Indian Story.

An Old man was planting seeds by the side of the road. A passer by asked him, this is not to become useful to you. By the time it fruits, you would be dead then. But he said "This is not for me". I seek only forgiveness from Allah. This will become useful for the later generations by the will of God.

Morality is disappearing from today's society.

Arrogance is appearing in today's society.

Holyquran.m was planting a story in the minds of QL'ers. But a passer by asked him 'this comment is not useful to anyone. by the time anyone understands it, you will be dead then'.

but he said "this is not for me, I have been told to say this by a holy book, I don't even understand what it means myself, I am just brainwashed."

this will become useful for later commenters by the will of Qhris.

I'd prefer the mall over the Doha zoo any day so that old lady completely did you a favor! seriously though, guess she was feeling particularly moody that day and you were an easy target.. hard as it is just think "kalli walli" and move on. All in a days work for us expats!

i have gone to the doha zoo myself about a month ago. relatively, its acceptably "well kept". im sorry to here about your "bad" experience. "MAYBE",you are just too beautiful and attractive with your attire that they found it "offensive"(remember...we are in the arab world, where the customs and traditions are just "overly" conservative). again, im so sorry about your experience. have a nice day.

And a matching Hotpants to go with.
