No shorts allowed at Doha Zoo!
I attempted to visit the Doha Zoo today with my daughters. It was practically deserted, only one other car in the parking lot. I go to the ticket counter (passing a male guard) and went to buy tickets (two Arab men behind the counter). As I was paying, an old, mean woman who was also a security guard started yelling at me that I could not enter because I was wearing shorts. (Bermuda shorts that fall to the knee, not Daisy Duke shorts). I said "where is the sign?' There is no sign that says you can't wear shorts, no sign at all about dress code.
There were plenty of other signs about not smoking, not harming the animals, etc.. but nothing about dress code. I got into a huge argument with the woman, and the one male employee told her to let me in, but she started yelling at him! In the end I just walked away as she kept yelling and went to the mall. (Where I had no problem wearing my Bermuda shorts.)
Has anyone else experienced this at the zoo?
I know that dress codes have to be adhered in certain places, and if there was a sign, I would have obeyed it, but it was clear that she was making this up as she went along. All 3 male employees had no issue with it, and there was nothing posted about dress codes.
It's the stinking zoo! Who am I going to offend, the zebras???
Nic...That's why I said most, not all.
I don't want a ticket for that event. I hope they make it a family only event. I also wish they deny entry to a few ticket holders too and refund after 6 months.
Edifis..they are coming to Qatar. It was announced in the GT yesterday.;)
A bizarre reply, edifis, and one that I suspect is not entirely serious. One thing I would say in response, however, is that humans who engage in prearranged public fights do so entirely at their own choice.
Human Fighting too should be banned! It's a shame to have WWF with all those barbarians.
If they really want to fight let the WWF come to the middle east. Atleast the ME is still in the 15th century..so they can have all the fights.
Shanester, yes, sadly, albeit illegal, some of those activites are still pursued.
About the zoo here...I went there once...and will never again set foot into that establishment.....I am not sure about the culture thing...I think it may be that animals are thought of, or viewed different by some people.
I have seen people screaming and running in fear when they see a dog or cat....it is known that some people intentionally hurt or even torture animals for entertainment....but culture, no, I think not.
@nomerci: I'm aware that cockfighting, dogfighting, etc are still actively pursued in the West, but the vast majority of the population revile such "sports" and they are practised - illegally - underground. The Spanish and their bulls are, of course, an exception, but the tide is slowly turning against bullfighting too. In the zoo, a significant percentage (way more than half) of the visitors were being downright abusive to the animals and enjoying it immensely. The only conclusion I can draw from that is that it is culturally acceptable to abuse animals over here.
KHATTAK,
Some just don’t dare to type what they think and some have a need to please the establishment's expectations, even if it goes against what they think.
Nic...Most are unafraid of speaking out the truth....on QL.
Shanester,
Well said!
If all here were like you unafraid of speaking out, the pressure to change (a.k.a. to progress) perhaps would be more noticeable.
shanester, not quite true. There is bullfighting, cockfighting even dog fighting in the West. Although, some of it is illegal, it still happens. It is true that people behave differently in zoos than many do here.
I think, in general, animals are regarded more favourably in the West than they are here and in some other places.
Steering back on track for a second, if I may, my wife was subjected to a verbal bashing for showing a bit of her arms from the same woman when we went to the zoo. As we'd already paid and had the kids with us, she put on a jumper to placate said woman and in we went. No problems so far - rules are rules (even unwritten ones).
What really annoyed me subsequently was the way the zoo visitors disregard every single rule once they get into the zoo, and nobody says a damn thing about it. The worst thing is watching adults showing their children how much fun it is to bang on cages and throw sweets, crisps and popcorn at the animals right underneath the "Do Not Feed" signs. I even saw one guy laughing with his kids at a baboon trying to eat a sweet in a plastic wrapper. Going back to the "which century are we in here?" question, en-masse behaviour like that hasn't been seen in the West since the middle ages, when bear baiting and cock fighting were popular spectator events. If you judge the level of civilisation by how a people treats animals, I'm afraid you're left with one damning conclusion about this place.
So, in summary: if the zoo's security guards are going to enforce one rule to the point of fanaticism, they should at the very least enforce rules that are there for the welfare of the animals to at least the same degree.
Rant over
Elaph, can you read? If you can, read the posts in this thread...and after that you can adjust your post accordingly.
After hearing that some people went today with shorts on, I am very tempted to try again...
21 century mean women can go naked, another naive and full of hate post and since women cloth doesn't matter why women bother and spend so much trying to show off their goods and attract men and not to look fat ?
So...now we know that we can't wear Bermuda shorts at the Zoo,no swimming suits at the waterpark and Katara beach. So....let's see what else we can find out.
i was going to question the same thing to tinkerji what she means by
"Someone please remind me that we are still living in the 21st century?????"
Do you think posting this is nice?
"Someone please remind me that we are still living in the 21st century?????"
Unlike Saudi, there is not a fixed dress code here. But people here expect foreigners to dress modestly
Like i written earlier,Dress code differs from one area to another and can be tricky. that area in particular is inhabited by most conservative locals.
In this particulate case, the secuirty women had no right to do so without official notice.
don't act smart, my post was directed to your "oh i'm so shocked they have a dress code here" cynical post while every tourist guide in India has a long list of what a women should wear.
And don't get me started at the gazing & touching of women shoppers in Colaba.
As for the OP, i addressed that in my previous post
Well, then you should be ok !
Are below 35?
hahah...don't worry, you can still pull an abaya off....just has to be the right one.....if you ever need one let me know, i'll help you find the right one. :)
Tinker, are you short or tall? ;)
And THAT, tinker, is why I say I would not have a problem with the abaya here. See, for me it is only a means to avoid problems, as it was in Saudi, nothing more, nothing less. The meaning it may have for others means nothing to me.
You adjust to the sorroundings. Nomerci lived in Saudi and wore an Abaya. Now heer , she doesn't, but wears appropriate clothing.
Its horses for courses.
Its all too easy to say, "yes, but, what about......"
It worked a treat in Saudi.
Throw on an Abaya and not worry about what's underneath..
Sometimes I think they should make an abaya mandatory...at least one would have not to go through those upsetting incidences. Would be much easier too.
While the rest of us have to dress like Jokers.
No edifis, I do not wear "weirdest clothes". I wear clothes that prevent me from feeling uncomfortable , for different reasons, here.
In other places that would not be necessary.
And since I like fashion, there are, in fact, many items that I would like to wear, but can't do here.
But that simply comes with the territory.
Superman and Batman would fit in perfectly in Doha!
One wears his underwears over his trousers and the other always wears an abaya.
Wow Nomerci!...so you always wear weirdest clothes when you are in Doha!
So it should not be a problem spotting you in the streets of Doha.
....raises an excellent point indeed. A trip to the local mall and you can witness some of the new-blood of Arabic women wearing an abaya so skin tight...that it makes you wonder why on earth they are wearing them at all.
Figure hugging, sparkling....some of the women actually look, gasp!, attractive :-o
i thought the point was....
edifis, as I don't do that, I won't have to think about that.
Going by Pilgram's description, it will be she, along with her husband and a few hangerss on :O(
I've never heard of anyone being deported for what they wear edifis, I've only heard of people being told to go home and change by police.
Pilgram/Nomerci/Britex if you wear your normal clothes here in Doha who will be deported...will it be only you or you along with husband?
u mean feeding the animals :-))
I escaped during feeding time.
Uranus ur supposed to be there everyday ;)
I was at the zoo today and counted five women wearing shorts. No sign of an old angry Arab woman, though.
the other 2 guys did not say anything because they saw a beautiful lady for the first time. most of the time those poor guy have to see only this frustrated lady sitting with them :-))
Thanks
My biggest issue was that the other employees had no problem with the shorts. There was no sign (unlike the shopping malls)and if I walked in to that zoo wearing skin tight jeans and a skin tight long sleeve shirt, that probably would have been ok.
I always laugh at the women who wear hijabs and jeans that look like they were painted on them and wearing 4 inch stilletos.
Seriously, who is more provacative: a middle aged mom in Bermuda shorts with two screming kids at her side, or a 20 year old girl wearing skin tight jeans, high heels and way too much makeup, too much jewerly, but happens to be wearing a hijab?
whenever i see a man sitting on the rock, i remember u :-))
Same here no merci. FAAARRR too long. LOL.
Pilgram, I would certainly hope so.....:0
But I have to say...it feels weird in the beginning...and I always look around expecting people to stare at me,,which of course nobody does....I think I have been too long in the ME...lol.
welcome back after a long time :-)
LOL. My husband calls me a slut when I'm dressed normally. Pretty sure he's joking though ;P
Pilgram, my husband reminds me every time that I can and should now wear "normal " clothes...lol
'Be a Roman while you are in Rome'
Usually about a week as well No Merci. But it depends on the clothes. Really short things or cleavage barring can take me up to two weeks.
Pilgram, me too...and I don't even think it's weird anymore...it's almost scary!
Btw, how long does it take you to wear clothes the way they are supposed to be worn when you are back home? Takes me about a week.....
LOL Brit! I wish that's why I wore jeans under dresses!
The onset of Cellulite is a terrible thing :O(
The funny thing is No Merci I do do that now. I have several dresses that I only wear over jeans, or with sweaters over, or even tank tops underneath (to hide cleavage).
I was really pleased when I actually got to wear one of my dresses as a dress last weekend here in Abu Dhabi and nobody thought it was immodest!
lol, funny thing...once a salesman in a well known fashion outlet wanted to sell me a short, off the shoulder dress...besides that being not my style, I asked him "and where /when would I wear this here"? He said you can put long trousers under it and put a shawl over it...I thought that was hilarious!!!
why kind of stuff allowed here for sale, if one not allowed to wear them!! are those sticked for window shopperS!!
I think it was in Sete, brit. The beach near Montpellier.
Seems you and I visited the same beached in St. Raphael :O)
Meaning: they are harassed, and not the naked ones.
All along the nude beaches the women with something on are far more sexy than the naked ones!
genesis,
in which cultures (civilizational stage) women are “harassed” or “touched” for not wearing modest?!
MENA
Are you telling me that “where you come from” there is no restriction on dress code?
At least here women will not be “harassed” or “touched” for not wearing modest
Great.. I'll be casually wandering around Villagio tonight watching out for you in the halterneck and fishnets.
Those clothes are probably sold to be worn at private functions or indoors.
thanks, you too.
just joking. have a nice day ahead ;-)
deal done ;-)or for a treat in biryani hut ...lol:-)) iam sure all are gonna object now for this :-))
I am going to go now, because right now we ARE really hyjacking this thread ;-)
Hahahaha...I see you take it well
no issues. instead of zoo we will go and attend william and kate wedding. i will be the bagpiper ;-)
He is male, he tries to flirt with every woman on every thread, notice how he checked you were one before winking his face off
Are you a male? If so, I propose the following: I wear below the knee shorts and you wear an above the knee skirt. And then we have a nice picknick together. What about that? ;-)
those fingers of urs :-(give them a break. :-(
wAt a thReAd!
Down with hotpants! i mean..... ;-)
Down with the fashion industry! I always said they're useless.
I know that clothes aren't for women to be shown like meat; nice clothes are for a woman to feel good about herself too, not just be stared at by men.
It is just the ratio of 'trendy' stores selling clothes to ex-pats, the majority of people here, who won't be allowed to wear them.
Of course if there were conservative stores it doesn't mean people will definitely go to them, but hotpants? I don't see the point in them being in every major store when you'd get jailed for wearing them.
let us both go to the zoo once. u wear below knee length short and i above knee length shorts. what u say. lets have some good picnic ;-)
Qhris if you ever go to the UAE, visit some of the high end clubs. Women came dressed in Abayas but when they were taken off after entering, the dresses underneath used to put the professionals in the club to shame.
thanks Qhris :-)
I can only assume that when the burka is removed, they are wearing sexy swim-wear and plunging necklines.
I am definitely a female! And I am not contradicting myself, please read again: I was saying that I do wear shorts and skirts back home. What I was trying to say was that here in Qatar I try to dress more conservatively eventhough I would not do this back home.
Liquorice wears a skirt in countries she is allowed, and wears trousers in countries with a dress code.
Comprende?
those clothes are gift for ur loved ones that u take them with u when u go on vacation ;-)
we were talking about cricket and not gorilla.
liquor for sure ur not a female and an old qler like me :-)). ur comments are contradicting here. stick to one. either wear a short or do not wear a short.
It baffles me. The racks are stuffed full of womens clothes that they are 'not allowed' to wear :-s
Good question Qhris, I wanna know who wears the hotpants they sell?
Imtiaz, I am not trying to hyjack the thread, but wasn't it about not being able to wear shorts in the Zoo? So I don't understand what you mean...
Your first comment was
imtiaz4u said is this true ...
that a female gorilla is more ferocious than a male gorilla
I see you are staying on topic like a good boy
Why do people get so offended. It just irritates me that people complain all the time about not being able to drink alcohol, about the dress code etc. Of course there are many things that could be better in Qatar, but then again there are also many things that I like about living in Qatar. Isn't that the case with any country?
The ones wearing bikinis at corniche were either high or they wanted to get deported. I couldn't make any sense of that.
then stop hijacking this thread
Mr M: Thankfully not, they wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of an angry Snessy ;-)
I'd just like to point out a pair of trousers shows the shape/outline of a woman's body more so than a skirt.
if shorts are not allowed in Qatar....then why are most of the stores in Vilaggio selling trendy swimwear and fashion?
Or is that to be worn underneath the Burka....
Liquorice any sites you visit will tell you the knee length shorts and skirts are appropriate.
...and I also wear skirts and shorts back home :-)
yes, why?
are u a female ;-)
u look like a dog but with clothes on...should she stop and question you to be naked because ur a dog :-))u will say no madam iam a human being and i would love to be covered rather than being compared to a fleshy dog ;-)
create a forum and we can play score score there. why to hijack this shorts forum.
Everyone who has read a bit about the culture of Qatar before moving here should know that the dress code is more conservative and that shorts are often frowned upon. There are numerous sites where you can find this information.
Dress code differs from one area to another and can be tricky. that area in particular is inhabited by most conservative locals. You should have argued back and threaten to contact officials as long shorts are not forbidden , unless you were wearing a tank top ;)
Expect more locals those days to comment on dress code, after pictures of westerners in bikinis sunbathing at the corniche is widely circulated through social networks, Blackberry & internet forums which offended many.
Still they have no right to do so without official notice. Thus, you're entitled to wear what you like as long as it's modest
Liquorice/taurz can you show me where is it mentioned that knee length dresses are not proper?
Atlest she was wearing a bermuda, what about the Animals who are running and jumping NUDE inside the cage ? :(
Why tat security lady didnt question them ? :(
why why , bolo bolo ?
Snessy i hope no security guard stopped you at the gate for wearing that skirt! :)
you tell the cricket scores, i tell the real score
I've been to the zoo numerous times (not out of choice) and have always worn a knee length skirt. Perhaps it was time of the month for her...
i expected qhris in this forum :-(
I don't understand why everyone is so upset about this issue. You decide to go and live in another country by your own free will, so it makes sense that you try to respect the codes of that country. It seems that some Westerners here in Qatar (I can say this since I am one myself) forget where they live and want to behave exactly like they do back home. Well, you're not back home and it is not the end of the world to have to wear long trousers.
I thought it was the animals not the trolls we were meant to be feeding?
Yes we are still living in the 21st century? But never lived in the 18th Century nor will live in 23rd Century except by the permission from God Almighty.
No, it is 1432!!
She is also a woman, going for a day out with her kids and looking at the animals, not strutting around Doha trying to be a sexual object.
What exactly is improper about a lady wearing bermuda shorts on a hot day?
Some of the animals are in heat so they were just being careful.
Why would you put water in a bucket that is turned upside down? Perhaps you have become too reliant on your bonded domestic servants.
I don't want to speak for Qhris, but I am fairly confident he would have the sense to turn it upright. That is one of the benefits of having a Western education.
WOW.... the subject is gotten from WHERE TO WHERE... !!
Coming back to the subject about the dress code..... in QATAR, you do not require a sign board to adhere to proper dress code. It is UNDERSTOOD and advised in ALL TOURIST publications on QATAR that you HAVE to adhere to "proper" dress code when in public places in the country.
Now, does a lady wearing SHORTS, come under the scrutiny the term "PROPER" dress code is argumentative... and open to discussion..!!!!
Are you really an illmannered shmuck or you are trying extra hard today?
You're right, he gave us wonderful things like shorts! and thou shalt wear thy shorts at thou Doha Zoo.
Wat a twist in the subject !
From Zoo to Religious bashing......:(
What does this have to do with shorts at a zoo?
At least the Christians did not go and kill random foreigners when Muslims burned and urinated on Bibles recently.

Who is burning the Quran? A Christian priest? Ask a question, if I write the name of Jesus Christ on a piece of paper 29 times and give it to him to burn it, will he burn it? If I write the name of Moses on a piece of paper and give it to a Jew, will he burn it? What they intend to burn is the same. In the Quran the name of Jesus Christ is mentioned with great Honour 29 times and the name of Moses with dignity 129 times, while the name of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon all of them) is mentioned just 4 times. In addition all the 24 prophets mentioned in the Quran are there in the Bible. Make them aware that they are burning the names of Jesus Christ, Moses and all 24 prophets. The problem is none of them have ever cared to read the Quran. My request to them is to read the Quran’s translation in their own language (easily available free in mosques and in Islamic Centers) and then decide whether burning the Quran is justified or not. Contd...
Whatever that priest has done he should have thought before doing this act that in the same book which he burnt had the names of Jesus Christ Peace be upon him, Mosses Peace be Upon him and all other Prophets. By burning the holy book he cannot deny the Oneness of Allah and Muhammad PBUH to be His last prophet. Shame on you.....May Allah forgive you and show you the right path. AMEN
May Almighty Allah guide us the right path and strength to counter such insane people. You burn Quran in your churches how you will burn it from our hearts.

Then what are you doing on QL/
Also your username suggest that you are the voice of the Qur'an. Is this not blasphemy?
Did Allah give you the medicine to cure your mental imbalance too. You need to tell him the pills aren't working for you :-(
as usual, tat old woman surely would be wearing an abaya and walking like a Duck....:(
More importantly, what was the old women wearing?
I visited the Doha Zoo wearing shorts, so I don't know what this old lady was on about.

An Old woman has more experience in life. But nobody can say I will also live to be Old.
What if her intention was your Well being? There had been Crocodile fatal atack even in an Australian zoo. After all you Understood what the Old woman said, but the Crocodile will not listen to her even if she tells them " Donot eat Minoush".
Here is an Indian Story.
An Old man was planting seeds by the side of the road. A passer by asked him, this is not to become useful to you. By the time it fruits, you would be dead then. But he said "This is not for me". I seek only forgiveness from Allah. This will become useful for the later generations by the will of God.

Holyquran.m was planting a story in the minds of QL'ers. But a passer by asked him 'this comment is not useful to anyone. by the time anyone understands it, you will be dead then'.
but he said "this is not for me, I have been told to say this by a holy book, I don't even understand what it means myself, I am just brainwashed."
this will become useful for later commenters by the will of Qhris.
I too was turned away for wearing my yellow speedos :O(
Below third world, before the Middle Ages.
GCC in its best!
Absolutely barbaric of this women. Perhaps she was part of an exhibit and they had forgotten to feed her.
Maybe she felt your shorts were on too tight,so she obviously didn't like what she saw.ALLAH AALAAM.
I'd prefer the mall over the Doha zoo any day so that old lady completely did you a favor! seriously though, guess she was feeling particularly moody that day and you were an easy target.. hard as it is just think "kalli walli" and move on. All in a days work for us expats!
i have gone to the doha zoo myself about a month ago. relatively, its acceptably "well kept". im sorry to here about your "bad" experience. "MAYBE",you are just too beautiful and attractive with your attire that they found it "offensive"(remember...we are in the arab world, where the customs and traditions are just "overly" conservative). again, im so sorry about your experience. have a nice day.
looooooooooool !! ...
I found this Ze-Bra. I think this is the best dress for ladies to wear to the Doha Zoo.
And a matching Hotpants to go with.
Rules? Written? You're right, they make it up as they go along.
Mandi
probably jealous...
They expect visitors in three piece dinner party suit ;))
lol..
i was thinking of checking out the zoo, getting to bored in doha i guess i wouldn't be wearing a shorts :-),
man i think she should of appreciate you coming in the deserted zoo instead going crazy about your shorts.
no wounder everyone is avoiding her ;)
that really stinks!!you should've just b****-slapped her and walked right in! hahaha...
What is the dress code for females?
sorry that u experienced that.. I'm sure that woman had some issues! and she sure needs some anger management classes along with her therapist's session! there are rude people everywhere.. I once was yelled at for wearing a Hijab (or a towel on my head) in the U.S.. I'm sure it's as frustrating...it left me in tears :'(
did u try going to zoo without shorts, sounds like an experience ;-)
She wanted to c u without shorts...
well, its not your lost..its their lost...their zoo is not as good as our country's zoos...and their employees has no manner...keep on shouting in front of other people...bossy type but lack of knowledge..
im sorry but as observed!
living in this place, you should be wary of such issues..living in a place in condemning it is pathetic..I am sure you saw no sign prohibiting alcohol but alcohol prohibition is out of question..
probably felt something? tingling? hence the best solution according to her. idiot
very strange...........
hmmm??? the user?
lol...!!good question!!
how do u know that bermuda is made in USA :-(
yes, but she really likes bermuda shorts (made in USA)...
she can buy a clean shorts from the market rather than a used one right ;-)
wear it this coming summer...
Mayb recycle it and then give tto ber boyfriend :P
and what will she do with the used shorts
she might want your shorts badly... ):
Mayb this female didnt got feeded by zoo people for few days :P
that a female gorilla is more ferocious than a male gorilla
was it " Bachelors day " ;)
Minoush, sorry about the joking...you must have been pretty upset. I sure would have been...although, after one visit(not in shorts;) ), I will never set foot into that hole again...I like animals too much.
But well, what to do yaani...it's Qatar.
Lol..Mayb that femalee husband didnt treated her well last nyt ..Mayb..Its also possible :P
the 3 male employees were the husbands of that lady. they prefer to keep quiet in front of the female :-))
maybe your camel toe was showing.
Yeah they did not want you to scare the well behaved animals and others too at the Doha zoo.
MRST....ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Might have driven the monkeys crazy...;)
possible you pulled it up too tight :-)
get a dishdash and go free Willy for added comfort
Hilarious! That should be posted in funnies :):)
It is getting out of any common sense more and more day after day...
