Domestic violence

I was very surprised at this article in the Gulf Times yesterday titled "Domestic violence remains a fact of life for many"

I am still somewhat new to Qatar and did not realize that is was such a problem here.

According to government studies it cites:

63% of women polled in Qatar (including expats and Qataris) reported being victims of domestic violence.

28% of Qatari women in another poll reported that they had been victims of domestic violence, "most frequently at the hands of their husbands (the main source), brothers or fathers."

The article identifies this as a genuine problem, noting that domestic violence is not even classified as its own crime.

These rates are very high for the developed world, and I was shocked by them considering women tend to receive special treatment in public here. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why these rates are so high? As reference, in France the rate is 10%.

I have my reservations on the percentages reported, the issue does exist.

The reservations and special treatment to women in public places actually implies the double standards that exist in society.

While other men (or women) should not as much as look at or inconvenience 'their' women at public places, the men themselves can do what they want with their women in the privacy of their homes.

And the excuses for the violence against women begins . . . Frenchie--I think you are about to get your answer as to why it is so prevalent here. How sad.

One would be surprised as to how many men are victims of domestic violence too. Be it among men or women domestic violence is never right and causes much pain and destruction not only to the spouses but their children and families too!

It does happen everywhere, but these statistics surprised me, too.

Surely the answer is greater awareness and a sincere desire of the police and judges to crack down on the abuses. It seems to me that part of the problem, however, is that sentences for violence here are far too light. If the guy gets punished with a fine and suspended or light sentence (usually the case in instances reported in the press), then he is free to take out his vengeance on the victim. What protection does she have? It reminds me of the UK a couple of generations ago, when this sort of thing was routinely swept under the rug.

The greatest reflection of a nation's character and civilization is how it treats its women.

It happens everywhere. In some countries it is considered being 'normal' and in others it's a crime!

Sorry am I missing some thing? When is Qatar classified as Developed World?

By Nic• 14 Apr 2011 07:36
Nic

As implied in the OP and mentioned by Happygolucky, it has to do with the development status which affects the level of women's emancipation which remains extremely low and in this region.

Maybe because they are not treating their woman as their equal.

Its an on going and common matter, no research is needed,

may be the said rate might come down n this or next generation, you being new now, would realize soon. what

source is there to prove its hardly 10% only in France ?

The answer lies in what you have stated "These rates are very high for the developed world".
