Question about job offer

Hi,

I got a job offer from an engineering contractor company based in Doha and would like to ask on how competetive it is. The position is: Design Manager. The package is 17600 QAR, private furnished accommodation, company car, 30 days holiday/year, once/year tickets for myself and my family, school alowance for children (when we have them), sponsored visas for myself and my wife.

I am a mechanical engineer, 7 years experience in design & p.management, chartered, MSc degree. I'm married and want to bring my wife with me. We are expecting our first baby in october.

From what the HR agency and people from the company were saying, it's just the food we need to spend money on, everything else is provided. They also said they would help my wife in securing the job.

Is this package worth considering? I have a good job here in Europe and I am happy with it, the offered salary is 2x what I am earning now, but when you add in all the extras (accommodation, car, tickets etc.) it's 4x more. It's a big move if we decide to come to Qatar so I would like your opinion on the job offer. How competetive it is on the current market and is it enough to support a family of 2+infant and save some money ?

Any comments highly appreciated.
Thanks

I am not in the UK and also I'm not british. I have to add the benefits as here in europe nobody pays for my rent/mortgage, car, holiday tickets etc. The only thing I have on top of my salary is private medical insurance. So I think that when comparing salaries you should look at what stays in your pocket after you pay all your bills, rent, petrol, food etc. Assuming I get the health insurance, it would be just food i would spend money on in qatar, while here I have to pay for everything.

you said you have a good job in europe.  if its just 2x (do not include the other benefits) then, the offer is not good.  and since it is a managerial position, the offer is low.  one thing more, you are in UK, the offer should be higher because nationality matters.  dont think of the accomodation or transpo..etc..etc.. think of your basic salary.  all offers for accomodation and transport are given to almost all who works here in qatar.

I agree with marycatherine. This offer is looking MUCH less attractive. Government health insurance would be unacceptable on its own, IMO.

Thanks again,

Maybe I just misunderstood them when they were talking about the contract. I think what they meant was that there won't be any set time frame written in the contract, which I think might be a standard practice.

There will be a second round of negotiations in few weeks time so thanks to You, now I know what to ask for.

Cheers

You get a contract. From your last post this offer is beginning to sound less attractive. Most expats get private medical, adequate tuition for dependent children, tickets, housing (allowance or provided), maybe transportation. I don't know the name of your employer but they can't hire anyone without offering a contract - that's how it works here.

You should also be aware that if you get here and decide at some point to change employers, your original employer has to give you a No Objection letter in order for you to do so - otherwise you get a 2 year employment ban.

Thank you for all the comments, it's really helpful.

Regarding the medical insurance, I was told I will get "government" insurace which I think is just the national health care which everyone gets anyway. Am I right by saying that? Is there a big difference in quality of service between national and private health care?

I'll push for private insurance anyway.

I would also like to ask, what are the standard terms of employment in Qatar? I was told that if I get hired, it won't be on a contract basis but a normal job like here in Europe with no set time of employment, so I can work as long as I want. Is it a standard practice ? Or should I push for contract? Except for the duration of employment, are there any other differences?

Thanks

for managerial position, ask for more..17600 is not fair enough.

Like Frenchieman says, check to see if you get private medical insurance, especially if your wife is pregnant and you're starting a family.

Also, check the tuition costs at schools you might consider in future - I know you don't need them now but you will and the better schools are very expensive - easier to negotiate a higher allowance now than when you need it.

It's a good offer, and I say that based mostly on the multiplier you are using. I would ask about health coverage. They have a national system here, which is good for emergencies but I would not recommend it for routine care, because it is over-stretched. The cost of living is higher here than most of Europe, but you will be largely insulated from it.

But ultimately, like you said, it is a big change. I would strongly recommend NOT coming solely for the money, especially since you have a good job already. People who do are usually miserable.

Sziwa, try to negotiate for a higher basic salary, somewhere in the region of QR20,000-25,000. This should be more than enough for you and your family, depending of course on your lifestyle.

Since your wife will be giving birth soon, it might be difficult for her to go to work since someone has to be there to take care of the baby and I don't think you would entrust the baby to a housemaid even if you could find one, which is quite a challenge here.

Anyway, the decision is all up to you. If moving to Qatar would be a good step for you professionally and financially, why not give it a try? Good luck!

Your basic salary 17600

company car saving of approx 2500 - 3000 plus fuel approx. 300 per month.

private furnished apartment (maybe u want to 2 BR) saving of 15000 (maybe u want 3 bedroom) saving of 18K - 20K

school allowance i dont know how much it cost sisnce i dont have any, so i would say ur package is worth anywhere between 40K- 50K. Thats very good salary for here for a couple with an infant.

Goodluck!
