Qatar rally to hold Iran

It was a cracker of a match. I think Qatar fully deserved a point against the much-more higher-ranked Iran. I hope they go from strengths to strengths from this point on. Go, Qatar!

Qatar came back from a goal down to hold fancied Iran 1-1 in their Group E match in the third round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Zone qualification at the Al Sadd Stadium on Tuesday.

Iran began strongly. Spurred on by a vociferous crowd, they attacked hard at the start. Their efforts bore fruit as defender Hadi Aghili put them ahead in the 46th minute.

But Sebastiao Lazaroni’s boys never gave up hope. They continuously pressured the Iranian defence and their perseverance paid off in the 55th minute as Mohammed Al Sayed scored a beautiful goal, much to the delight of the 7,000-strong home crowd.

Qatar will next face Indonesia away on October 11 while Iran will host Bahrain the same day.

i have been here long enuf to know abt the locals.....so dont do the "i know and u dont know " and "protecting their culture " thing...... flash-news thobes are not jus a qatari dress, they are wore all over the arab world and even islamic world......and who said abt qataris giving the labourers thobes, i never said they did.........common......i said their co-workers who were ushering them in the stadium gave each one of the labourers a cheap low quality probably "few days use" thobes with caps...and not ghutras..... i know a friend who is works in a construction company tht employs a large number of eriterians and said tht they were "treated" to this match! so im guessing u were sitting right next to the VIP section.....oh no thts not where labourers wud sit now wud they?? hmmm i dont think so!

i have my respect for lazaroni and i know alot more abt him then what wiki offers.......like i said it takes a lot more than jus a good coach........for the "QATARI" team to show what it has got.......  as for the league...i jus cant seem to find a place in those stadiums with soooo much air occupying the stands..(pshyce!)..... i rest my case.....

hmmm lets jus not hope he losses his coupla next matches or "Bang" he gets the boot!!

typical!!!

No, I didn't see the huge number of buses because I parked my car at the Al Sadd athletics/football training ground, bang opposite the stadium. Anyways, I still feel the Qataris wouldn't give thobes to labourers. Even though you may not be aware of it, the Qataris ARE fiercely protective of their national dress. Anyways, since I didn't see any labourers dress up as Qataris, I will not argue upon that point further. And as to the discipline matter, Lazaroni is the last word for it. If you were following the Qatar league for the last three years, you would've been aware of it. He helped Qatar Sports Club reach great heights during the time, through scrit measures. It was not for nothing he was chosen as the national coach.Just give him a few months and see what he can do. Also check him up on Wikipedia. He's one of the most respected coaches in Brazil and the Qatar Football Federation is behind him. I think he has the most chances to change the Qatar team's mentality among all coaches in recnent times.

ah common man...protective of identity....waaaat??

yes i was there and i was also there in the asian cup games....and i saw them and i even spoke to some of them.......where did u park ur car btw?? didnt u notice those busses parked in the empty ground opposite to the stadium.......the looong lines of labourers wud snake all the way to the entrance while a co-worker wud give them all a thob n a hat oh and also the flag......works well with the camera thing ...loads and loads of "citizens" attending......i guess all u cud do was open ur eyes......they werent sitting too far away now were they......u wont see the camera man zooming to them...lols!!

there is no support culture here....and u know it...it only comes when they play important games and they might win something.......

btw..... lazaroni or even zico or pele......a team not only needs a good coach...it also needs discipline and dedication and a loyal passionate fan base........when u entice players with money and material possesions its jus a play for fun sake.......

i have seen the india vs qatar match....and i sware i have yet to see a group of supporters and also team (inspite of their humbleness) played with so much passion and dedication tht they actually won the game......

Really, I wasn't aware of that. Where did you get that information from? Were you there? I had heard about them being herded in for the Asian Cup finals, but not this. Was that a vaild comment or were you just 'assuming and generalising'?I hope it's the latter, because otherwise, it's not too good! But I really doubt if they would allow labourers to dress up as Qataris. From what I know, they're fiercely protective about their national dress and identity. I don't think they would dress up labourers as Qataris just to fill up the stadium. But I agree to your other point, that the Iranians were exhausted. Maybe. But on the other hand, lazaroni had taken charge of the team just barely three weeks back and he had precious little time to prepare the side against a team of Iran's calibre. So I still think Qatar made the better use of the game and the point it offered.Just my take!

Cannot argue with you because I wasn't in villaggio counting the number of shoppers. But I can be almost positive about the number of Qatari fans because the official numbers were 8,175 fans.Since there were around 1,000 Iranian supporters as well, I'm pretty sure of my numbers. I WAS there. And I don't care a hoot about the number of shoppers in Villaggio. So don't bother enlightening me. Thank you so much!

It was a great game. Iran played really well in the first half while Qatar came back with a vengence in the second. A draw was well-deserved.
