Dubai: A mother and her five-year-old son have died after separately falling off the balcony of their flat in building no. MAG 214 in the Jumeirah Lake Towers in Dubai, according to police.

Dubai police sources said the mother was waiting with her 15-year-old daughter for the school bus on the ground floor of the tower and left her son unattended in the apartment. While they were waiting, she saw him fall off the balcony.

Upon seeing this, the mother became hysterical and rushed to her apartment where she threw herself out of the balcony.

Nobody mentioned that the 15 year old girl saw the entire event happen.  How will she cope with not only her brother's death, but seeing her mother jump as well?I'm sorry, but why couldn't she have taken the boy with her?  or lock the damn balcony door.  This was no fault but the mother's.  No common sense in these parts.  I bet she let the kid sit in the front seat while she drove with no seat belts, too.

Why do people always go on about designs and safety. The onus is on the individual themselves.

In this case , we don't know the circumstances but she was stupid to throw herself off the balcony :0(

Indeed a shocking end of lives. After all she was a mother and if she did not do what she did, in those understandable conditions, she would have lived in guilt of being the sole reason behind her son's death. May their soul rest in peace.I think safety is traded off for modern looking designs these days. I see most buildings in West bay without slightest of support or barrier to prevent someone falling off to death if the glass panes break somehow. I always wonder why don't they put up an impact bearing, at least, waist high wall or railing around the living area. Some might argue the glasses in use have high impact bearing capacities, double layered with vacuum between the 2 layers thus are super strong. I however have seen them shatter when, for example, a screw just brushes past the edge of these panes while it was driven to fix the frame that holds these glasses. Or just when an accidental, not so big, hand tool impacts the glass panes.

Hmm... definitely a weird act to do.. Mother was on the ground floor, saw her son fall off the balcony (obviously to the ground or the pane) n why did she go up 2 her apartment without attending to her child..quite weird

May all mothers take care of their young ones and do not abandon them! even for a slight moment let alone for months and years..:)

Who leaves a 5 year old unattended with an open door to a high rise balcony? Such a shame, but really, common sense people.

Fixing safety grills in all the windows must be made mandatory to prevent this. this is not the first instance, earlier too there were couple of such incidents reported from dubai towers. God bless them, may their soul rest in peace. Is'nt it a lesson for others ?

Very very sad! The poor woman must have been so pained and hysterical..This news really shook me! I live in an apartment with two balconies, on the 8th story and often fear such tragedies. In fact I've wondered if I am a tad bit paranoid. But after reading this I realize that one can definitely  never be too careful in such matters. Many times such tragedies occur due to parents, even momentarily, over/under estimating their child's capabilties. May such stories be a lesson to us all.
