Child Abuse, Qatar

DOHA: The watchdog for children and women’s rights says that it received more than 1,600 complaints on child abuse from 2004 to 2010.

The Qatar Foundation for Child and Women Protection said it received 1,638 complaints of child abuses during 2004-2010, a report issued by the Foundation said.

A number of victims approached the Foundation to lodge complains against child abuse. Figures suggest that in 2004 only 145 cases of violence against children were recorded with the figure soaring to as many as 434 in 2010.

However, it is significant to note that the maximum number of child abuse cases was reported in 2005 at a high of 459.

More than 461 of the total number of abused children fell prey to family violence and others were subjected to physical, physiological, sexual harassment, a local daily reported yesterday.

The fact that sexual abuse of children is rampant is largely because the parents or guardians of affected children choose to remain silent and do not report the matter to law-enforcement agencies for fear of social embarrassment due to the conservative nature of society.

An eye witness, a Qatari woman, told the daily that as she was once waiting to take her children from their school back home she saw a car pulling up near her.

A visually-impaired child was inside with two maids and a driver. When the school bell rang, both the maids got down and went into the school to pick the child or children they had come to pick.

They left the visually-impaired girl with the driver and suddenly the latter began doing “something” with the former in what was a clear case of child abuse.

“I could not tolerate and went to the car and asked the driver to leave the child and hand her over to me. I asked the driver what he was doing with her. The driver replied he was just playing with her,” said the woman who gave her name as Umm Khalid.

“I told the driver that I would call the police and inform the parents of the girl. The driver began to shiver, asking for forgiveness and said that he wouldn’t repeat the mistake,” said Umm Khalid.

The woman said that her advice to parents and guardians is that they should take their children to school and bring them back home themselves and should not trust them with drivers.

no merci--yes studies do show what you say. I was responding to OP's example of the driver. In a country with so many servants who are given the charge of children this is especially a worry. Many criminals falsify their documents to reach here.

The fact that these cases are being reported is a good move in the right direction.

Is the figure of 461 children abused by their relatives for nationals or for all children in Qatar?

Xena: I couldn’t have said it better!

Indeed, 90% of child victims know their offender, with almost half of the offenders being a family member. Of sexual assaults against people age 12 and up, approximately 80% of the victims know the offender.

Sexual Abuse is a serious problem and it is entitled for a huge punishments.

Each and every people living in this country must learn and read about such cases.

This kinda problem is not to hide...at least through this site and other networking site.

but what about family members? YOu cannot get references on them...you just have to trust that because they are your family they wouldn't do that to your child...

Don't be so niave and assume it's only workers that would do this....

A sad problem in in country. The need is to always report the problem like the example woman in the article. Workers background checks can be easily altered or forged, so we do not always know the history. Lesson is to be careful.
