Coming from the UK
Hi,
was hoping people who have moved to Qatar from the U.K. could give me some pointers on what I need to watch out for. I have seen the earlier post.
Was wondering about tax related stuff like P45s, rental income, investment income, current pension accounts, etc. Hoping to get some ideas before I go talk to an accountant. (Do I need to?)
Also, it was mentioned in one of the posts that having a U.K. licence means that we dont have to go through the whole driving test process in Qatar. Is this true? Do I need to first convert my licence to an International licence?
you can get your tax fefund ,if you are moving out of uk
Close to work and schools, the traffic is horrendous!

Hi,
I have just been offered a job in Doha, any recommendations on where to live?
Chet
You can buy all those things here very easily.
My move to Qatar has now been finalised. Busy packing. Anything you wish u had brought over with you? - a nice big gas barbecue, a dyson vaccum cleaner (or my Henry), a good food processor (wife's choice), etc.
HMRC has extensive information on their web site about these topics.
link is
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/tax-leave-uk.htm
The information may be little confusing but read through it eventually it makes sense. You do need to fill few HMRC forms before you leave
If you remain out of the Uk for some time, you may be entitled to claim back some of your tax paid during the current tax year. If you call HMRC (in my experience they are really really helpful) they can assist you in this.
Re VAT, you have to claim it back at the airport on departure- huge queues and huge hassle so why bother. Wait till you land here and buy what you need. It may be a little more costly, but hey, Shopping malls are the major leisure opportunity at weekends here especially when it gets hot!
RE Rental income- I guess you are renting out your house? Your agent can apply to receive the rent without any tax being paid- I forget the form reference- however, if you retain income in the UK you will need to complete a tax return (online self assessment) and assuming that your income, less expenses, takes you above the personal allowance threshold, you need to pay tax on that element. E&OE
Nervous One, thanks for that, it helps.
Claiming Tax back - I assume you are talking about VAT on items bought here in the U.K.? Surely, you cannot claim back income tax?
Claiming back VAT - any idea where I can find more info on what I can claim back VAT on? Will do a google search as well.
Thanks
Hi,
Regarding your driving licence, don't bother getting an international one, I did, and it was a waste. I converted my UK one to Qatari one as soon as I got my RP.
NO test necessary, only an eye test.
Not sure about the other bits you are asking about, but I'm sure someone else will advise you.
I claimed my tax back when I left though... Definitly do that if you're staying out of the UK for some time...
Good Luck
