1st Pakistan National to win an Oscar
I was so surprised to read this piece of news in Gulf times (Surprised in a good way, of course) about Pakistan having its first Oscar winner.
It is truly something the people of Pakistan can feel proud of, and can help budding film makers to be more motivated.
Kudos!
"Pakistan woke up to an altogether different note on Monday morning with journalist and documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy grabbing the golden statuette at the 84th Academy Awards. For more, read:

:)
lmao miss T breaking it down!!
good debate going on ;)
laa múshkila, no problemo, de rien....no worries, be happy!
Speed, did you hear ALL nationals?
So, to wrap this up from my side :
1. I asked a question, my question was not answered.
2. People are putting words and meanings into my posts that were never there.
Nothing new really, but still disappointing, although not surprising.
Anyhow, as I said in my first post, congrats to the lady.
But you got some dumb students also, who can't understand simple things..
nomerci said :
"Congratulations to the lady! Well done!
I do have a question though. How is it possible that a nation is proud of a reward that is American?
I am asking this because so very often we see pictures of said nationals burning the flag of the country that has given the lady this award...America.We see and hear comments from said nationals about how much they hate America.
And now this nation, Pakistan is proud of one of their own receiving an award that is as American as apple pie?
This I don't understand.
Can somebody explain?"
Do I hear the word NATION? NATIONALS?....
thankx missteacher.. :-)
ingeniero, you got me wrong :P
I'm lucky, I have a class of sharp minded students:D
Alhamdulillah, Debate over... :)
Thank God:D
Don't ask me for what?
Her name means ...No Thank You in French no??
Sometimes keeping quiet or quickly switching on the ignore mode can help keep the fun, enjoyment and celebrations alive, No.
tell you wat, i just realize what your name is.............................and now i get it all.......:-)
no merci............:-( show some merci :-)
(Merci)Mercy :-)
nomerci, dear nomerci, "Funny enough, I personally , before I ever came on to QL ,had no idea how severe the dislike of many people towards the West in general really is...QL and its posters taught me the ugly truth".
What makes you feel many people dislike west?
dear i have an advice for you, google the facts the other side of the picture? you are keep seeing only one side of the picture, and that one side exist all over the world,
Where have I said that all Pakistanis dislike America and its people?
Nowhere.
But even those here on QL who so vehemently insist that most Pakistanis do not dislike the American people and America, but only its policies, must admit that the general stance towards America and its people is negative....unless of course what the media and QL conveys are lies.
Funny enough, I personally , before I ever came on to QL ,had no idea how severe the dislike of many people towards the West in general really is...QL and its posters taught me the ugly truth.
Anyhow,it does not really matter, just wanted to mention it.
What an Irony, If Sharmeen is a Dual Nationality holder that does not make any difference, The fact remains She lives in Karachi, Her Family is in Karachi, and she is the Co-Founder of "Citizen Archive of Pakistan"...
When it comes to Hatred, Yes Pakistani do have a Bad view of USA But not about the People but about the Policies the "Super Power" is adopting, Why didn't anyone in this Thread mentioned the name of Iran,It also collected the Oscar Award.
No one can say Specially Someone "Who does not know the Ground Reality in Pakistan, Nor has lived or even been to Pakistan" can vouch all the Pakistani Hates U.S.A.
Double Standards at its level best!
Dear all,
i like speedy;s reply, and Rohi.............pleasea you do not have to be rude, n please do not ask for nationality, if she dont wanna discuss it, is ok thats her choice..............and every matter or ever question can be answered wisly, so why we all here doing something that seems we are fighting??
grownup u...............
and dear Nomerci, by ur insist and repetition of the same question make it firm that all pakistanis hate americans or watever, which is completely wrong and baseless, giving a negative message atleast here, so try to rephrase ur question if for somereason u thinks its not still answered. and let us all know what answer you are expecting???
Well, my Iraqi-American friends call themselves "American", as do most immigrants who have citizenship in the US. If she has chosen to be Canadian then I honor her choice.
Mandi
WoW....Congratulating someone for winning an oscar has managed to make everyone angry and some go on to talk about politics...oh dear
In your question, You simply generalized all Pakistanis as hatred of USA. There are 175 million Pakistani living in Pakistan, do you think all of them are hatred?? If yes then I am sorry for your lack of knowledge and hurting all the Pakistani community specially on QL with your question.
For your information, those who hate US Government, they hate for reasons mainly due to it's foreign policies, I am sure they don't hate American People but their Government... and these negative feelings you will not only find in Pakistan, but in Europe, Asia, ME, Africa etc...
Also, before posting something do some research, Shareem Obaid Chiony is a Pakistani- Canadian not only Canadian.
She was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan.
Do some Google and see what the world Media is calling her 'Pakistani' or 'Canadian'?
Hope you get the answer!!
i am sorry breebree i realize that its ur sinature line truly sorry for that
breebree, nomerci is your second profile?
Another way of seeking attention? Since your breebree magic is not working.
OMG, rohi wtf is your problem ?? normeci sweety it aint worth blv me
So did you figure out your Nationality yet??????????????
nomerci I think only a PSYCHIATRIST will answer your question.
May God help you poor lost soul.
Blue bell, maybe if you read the thread again you will understand that your answer has nothing to do with my question.
Dear God, is it really THAT difficult?
I thought it was a simple and easy to understand question...apparently not.
Anyhow, thank you all for your time and effort...maybe we will try again another time...
nomerci talk to my foot.
i can predict a lock on this thread.
and off the topic, if germans have to do anything with hitler's chambers???
nomerci - Which part of the above is incomprehensible to you darling? Oscar is a award of international repute and irrespective of political alignment, every recepient is a reason to celebrate for the entire world let alone the country of origin.
I'am happy for the lady.
NATIONALITY???
Rohi, talk to the hand.
oh, and DK, I have no idea!
I am just talking about the general consensus that is conveyed through media and QL...and THAT is far from friendly towards America and its people.
Jelousy is a disease, get well soon.
nomerci you have'nt answered my question, WHAT IS YOUR NATIONALITY?
Congrats Pakistan.
Nomerci
She is a Canadian of Pakistani origin and she dedicates her award to all Pakistani Women. Why do you have an issue with her nationality BTW??
What is your nationality nomerci?? I think someone asked you this question earlier. I PERAONALLY THINK YOUR NATIONALITY IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION. Or are you too ashamed of your nation so you have listed a fake one, which is clearly obvious by the way...
well, she has chosen perfect topics of west, and got what she deserved.
btw, if anyone has watch Sharmeen's short video???
I think SpeedySid accurately answered your question, if it was a matter of simply having your QUESTION answered....
Re-Posting it in case you missed it.
Speedysid said /-a-t-/Nomerci ...
Not all Pakistanis hate the USA. What you see in the news is only a certain section of the society doing so, which is vastly outnumbered by people who don't want to do such things...
The award,I believe, is for something that exposes a sad truth not only in Pakistan, but many other countries. The universal message that her documentary carried must have to be appreciated.
Nomerci, let us enjoy and celebrate her achievement rather than stirring up a hornet's nest and make this post digress from its original intention. Thanks!
Do they give a Certificate along with the statue or else people might try to replicate/duplicate and sell in the market!
Hatred? Where do you see hatred on this thread? Not from me, that's for sure.
And btw...the lady who received the Oscar is Canadian, as it turns out.
Kudos Pakistan!
Hi Everyone, I'm new to Qatar Living. I would like to congratulate all Pakistanis on this great achievement I think it is simply wonderful and a big Kudos to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy.
I just read all these posts and I'm surprised to see so many haters. Being on an International forum and in a country where most of us are from somewhere or another, shouldn't we all appreciate each other on achievements?? We are all away from our home countries and, shouldn't we all be supportive of each others achievements? I hope I'm not offending anyone. It's just my opinion, but I think it's absolutely great that Pakistan has made it's way in the Hollywood Limelight. Well Done Pakistanis!
Mabrook...:)
BTW with the best of my analysis and thinking it seems it would take quite many years to verify with certainty if any of the person who ever was part of burning flags was celebrating this occasion. And the findings, whenever concluded, would still not be reflective of the truth, the 100% truth, as some may have moved out of the country or may no longer be alive by the time the team reaches their door or may just not confirm either, depends.
come on man now from which line have you picked this???? bro i have already said enough,
no how can they be them? i have already mentioned above who celebrate and who...................anyways...............
So, are these the same individuals celebrating this award who had burnt the flag of US?
See Below :-)
Dear Nomerci when did I say I dislike american politics?? But yes I dislike politics in general, and yes ofcourse its very very very very very very very very very baaaaaaaad to burn flag as its not an appropriate way of expressing your anger, rather a fooolish way, and honestly not just me but several wanted to stop that but we couldn’t, and dear I have mentioned it, that we are surly not celebrating what she has in her hands, we are celebrating that she has been recognized, been appreciated and celebrating that what she has brought on the table which was under the table from years, we are surly not celebrating the material, as if you successfully complete ur degree u celebrate? Right? But your definetly not celebrating the piece of hard paper. But! the degree that would be considered as a proof of your knowledge?? Otherwise people might not listen to you,
Master UBC, having friends from a country whose politics you dislike is perfectly fine IMHO.
But to celebrate a reward received that is as American as apple pie, basically stands for the country itself, is, IMHO, if you dislike this country, wrong.
Furthermore, as we all know, many Pakistani people do not talk bad only about American politics, but about American people as a whole.
And quite frankly, burning the flag of another country is very, very bad IMHO and the opinion many people.
As is burning effigies.
DK, the citizens.
nomerci,
"..this is a question not of politics, but of integrity"
Whose integrity? Pakistan as a state or its citizens?
my answer has nothing to do with politics, neither i wanted to discuss politics, it was an explaination to make you understand,
i have several friends from USA, now as you have mentioned that people from pakistan burns US flag, doest it make you feel in anyways that am also hypocrite???
Dear Missteacher.................i wanted to take a map and remove all lines from it, why do we have to have boundries,
Doha Knight and Master UBC, I had and have absolutely NO intention to discuss anything political here. As mentioned before, this is a question not of politics, but of integrity.
You may catagorize people in three, Extremist, Politicle and General, in every country there is a ratio of educated and uneducated, likewise, in pakistan the litracy rate is low, due to which they have a great number of people how's thinking capacity is low……….they oftenly driven and be used by some extremist, sometimes by politicians and the picture of Pakistan you sees on your screen is what media shows you, they could have not show you that, but then how they would run there business because thats all what world wanted to see, the point here is those you see on screen burning US Flag are those illeterate community or group of people bring out by some puppet runners to do so, and honestly speaking, they dont even know what they are burning………………..believe me, but here people who appreciating this award are not those people, they belong to the community of literate pakistanis………..and we are appreciating on what she has done, not on what she has achieved, she has highlightened the hidden issue facing by Women of pakistan in its interior areas, not in developed areas, be clear about it,
If you still confused? And wanted to know something more to clear you, I am here ask me?
and im glad you raise this point really good nomerci
I want to change books....
I, 100% agree with you Nomerci…………….and tell u the truth you have raised a very relevant question to this post, I agreed with you, why are we celebrating this award. And yet I have few questions to ask you dear nomerci, my intentions of asking these questions are not to divert you from ur question, the intention is simply to bring you on the same page, so we both may understand the point that is being discussed,
The U.S.-Pakistan development partnership goes back decades and has evolved considerably over time. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided nearly $7 billion to assist Pakistani government in achieving its important development goals since the start of its operations in 1961.
My question to you is, US is consistently accusing Pakistan for being the promoter or producer of Trouble makers(Taliban)………….and yet provide billions for its development, why? Is it they trust Government or is for some other reason?
Dear Nomerci, do u know the history?? Let me remind u this event known as “The American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), the American War of Independence, war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and thirteen British colonies in North America. Does it seems today something like this had ever happened in past???
Now let me remind u something more, just last example with a last question.
Adolf Hitler, rings some bell, in second world war he burns humans……..i don’t wanna discuss the whole event, most of us know about it, my question is, aren’t that two nations living together now? Accepting eachother and infect are after third nation together?? Why have they forget all??
I hope this may bring u on my page…. now here is your answer.
There may be some political differences of opinions between the two countries of-late but Pakistan is still an ally of the US..so as a state Pakistan will never disown any title or honour placed upon its citizens for a personal achievement.
nomerci, are you confusing Pakistan with the Taliban, Al Qaida or other extremists in the country??
well dayuum
Well, I gather she was born in Pakistan. But she has chosen to be a Canadian.
Mandi
Oh dear!
And they thought she is Pakistani! WOW!
Hahaha....aww brilliant! All this and she is Canadian! Who is she and what was she in???
Actually, she's Canadian, sorry!
Mandi
wow
nomerci, what is your nationality ? just wondering.
nomerci, I answered your question in the very beginning at 2:51pm...
In simple words if your child misbehaves, you would not praise him surely, but when he does something good, you would definitely feel proud of him.
Is it called your double standard or hypocrisy? No!
All reactions are on the basis of actions.
ok, I still do not feel I received an answer or proper explanation.
Never mind, it does not matter.
I was just curious . Apparently that was wrong.
Speedysid thanks for sharing.
nomerci we do not need your opinion on this matter.
Its not a political forum and we do not need you to create propaganda.
Poor @breebree! I don't think that people realised the troll part is your signature.
Well done Pakistan!! :)
Rohi, I asked a question,as simple as that. I do not see the need or purpose for your judgment.
Can you, by any chance, answer my question?
I find it a bit puzzling that, after all those posts a simple question still has not been answered.
Must I conclude that people do not want to answer it?
Congrats Pakistan. GeO Pakistan. Long Live Pakistan.
nomerci I am sure there are more important things in your life, for you to wonder about.
There is nothing wrong with being happy. Think positive. If you can,t be positive its better to stop thinking + wondering. Hope you get my point.
Speedysid, indeed they don't! thank God!
Still, the question remains..please do refer to my post above to Ghazalz.
Ghazalz, I know they do.
But, my question has still not been answered. How can one be proud of achieving something from a place one dislikes?
OR, are those pictures we see about unbridled hatred fake?
Are the comments one reads in national, international press ,sees tv, even on QL, lies?
See, if I happened to dislike a person, country, for what ever reasons, I would not even intend to achieve a reward/ award/ degree etc. from that person/place.
It would, in my eyes, be hypocracy to do so.
I would stick with those places/people who I feel comfortable with.
Therefore, I do not understand the pride about this Oscar.
Simply put- Art and Literature have no boundaries...
nomerci, almost our all those students who can afford it go there for higher studies...because achieving something from a reputed institution IS a matter of proud.
Speedysid, as I said to Ghazalz, my intention was to find out how people can be proud of an award from a country that they seem severely to disagree with.
The intent of the film, why the award was given, appreciation etc. were not the intent of my post.
I also do not see how my question, if understood properly, can stir a hornet's nest.
I, in fact, think that quite a lot of people may have the same question as I do..as it, IMHO, is a natural reaction to past and current events.
Ghazalz, my question had no intent whatsoever to discuss America's standing in our world, nor their policies.
My question was purely intended to find out how a people, who seem to have a severe dislike towards America, can be proud of an award that comes from America.
Thanks!
nomerci, America is a super power and it can't be denied, but the policies and actions which are against any group of people always be criticized.
No matter it is a super Duper or the 3rd world's
Congratulations to Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy!
Yes, of course. Still, I do not see how it explains that nationals who burn the American flag pretty consistently can be proud of one of their own receiving an Oscar...sure, what that brings with it may be something they like...BUT it is still worldwide recognized as a purely American award...does being proud of this Oscar indicate that people may, from now on , act differently?
Because I do not think it is possible to be proud of something one hates.
nomerci, the journalist raised a point and he has a large group of alike...
Ghasalz, I an not worried at all! I am just wondering. The link to the article does not answer my question at all.
Don't worry nomerci have a look of the link;
http://tribune.com.pk/story/344036/how-to-win-an-oscar/
Congratulations to the lady!
Can somebody explain?
seriously you dont wanna know???
lolzzz breebree I think your signature line made a mess here :)But what's that 3 letter word beginning with W?
Congrats Sharmeen, Indeed it was a Great Moment for Pakistanis all over the Global, not to forget She even won Emmy Award back in 2010 for her Short Film on "Taliban"...
hi breebree, dont get angry fellow, they might misunderstood you, and if u really from USA then i garuntee this, that u cant be racist, because of the fact that u can find any nationality world on that land of opportunity, and the aroma of that great land is, they provide equal treatment to all of them or if you people dont agree with me so i can amend my statement a little but still would say they treat 90% equally............................!!!!!!!!!!
and guys be polite and be reasonable and always talk with facts and figures, pointing finger at some one is easy but justifying it is quite difficult, so be reasonable...............
WTF!!!! i said "yessss" for the oscar winner, which is a positive thing , so that makes me a racist to agree with the OP ... alishah and sanamjee go preach that shit in a corner ... i aint no racist u triffling azz #$%
Well done Speedy:) and Sharmeen!
breebree. Jealousy??????
breebree u cant judge all the people the same way and for ur information they also have the same blood and skin as u have the only difference is the color so dont be a racist
Thanks...... :)
good to see..congrats
yessssss
