Working for Hotels..is it worth it?
Hello all
I'm looking for some advice/knowledge from those living in Qatar.
I am a bit apprehensive about applying for or accepting job offers coming from hotels, never mind they are international brands, but particularly after reading stories about persons not getting exit visas and other job horror stories.
Firstly, How problematic is it to get an exit visa? I do enjoy my freedom and would like to at least have the option of visiting nearby countries, etc.
My next question is about accommodation - when they say accommodation provide in associate housing complex what does it generally mean? and does it come out of your salary?
Is the 'free transport to and from work' really free?
thanks for you input and advice....in advance
didn't get through with the first hotel.. Renaissance as they kept putting their start date off more and more and then kept transferring me from one person to the next, and the last person never responded.
still looking though as I see a number of new hotels have opened up.
Someone mentioned they worked for Hilton, can you share some more on that experience and where their staff facilities are, etc....
thanks
Close enough, honey, close enough.
Mandi
Well, I guess the fact that I'm not nude there won't bother anyone. But in any case I guess i will follow your advice and find something less eye catching for the surrounding people...
Not just this site, but the entire Middle East in general! Suggestive female nudity just isn't "done" here. It's considered asking for trouble, if not an example of cultural insensitivity.
Mandi
Mandilulur , should I? I'm not aware of the policies of the site too much for the moment...Sorry
Err, Saykko, you might want to lose that profile pic!

Usually Employer open's Account, but i suppose you have a Option, Atleast i had the Option to Open an Account in my Preferred Bank...
been hearing that about the low salaries at Hilton...
..k...so the employer opens an account for you ??
Hilton.... one of my friends recently joined there, did visit him few weeks before. Their accomdations are new and pretty good.
Hilton doha is besides movenpic towers its still in the pre-opening stage... I am a ex employee of Hilton (not in doha)As far as my experience goes hilton is a good chain to work for, the only problem i had was their salries are little low compared to the other hotels.
Living in housing or quarters is not any differnt from living elsewhere... u will get used to it.
Banking u dont have a choice... u salary gets transfered to the salary acc opened by the hotel, usually they have a tie up with local banks... but there are no restrictions, u can always open an account in any of the banks and bank with them.
hotels:
well it's Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Crowne Plaza, there is another one that an agency referred me to, but I cannot recall the name. Didn't really bother with them as they never responded to any emails or such.
been looking online for photos but nothing....
I'm afraid we'd have to know the hotel before we'd know anything about accommodations. There just isn't a "standard" in Doha.
Mandi
Thank you for this...it certainly highlights a bit more...
IT won't be F&B dept, it would be more Front Office.
I don't eat out much and do enjoy cooking....
Great to know the rates are cheap for mobile...
The thing about moving to another country is just about getting the right information to make sound decisions...whether it's Middle East, USA, Europe, Caribbean...everywhere will have its pros and cons....it will be up to how much information and fact finding is done prior to make that decision, which is why I'm asking all these questions.
What's life like in the living quarters?
Banking? how is that done? Do you have a choice as to where your salary goes? etc?
And any other tips would be appreciated
Tips policy in fnb is shared among the staff.. Supervisors do get tips but some hotels leave the managers out.... Every hotel has a tips distrubution policy and it varies from hotel to hotel. As mandi said dont count on tips as end of the day ur basic salary is what counts when u resign and they pay u the end of service benifit.
Paying for one meal is not an issue... eating out in doha is expensive if u are someone who like to cook it would be nice.
If you apply for your own Internet... charges for a month would cost you minimum 220Qr. As they hotel rents out the whole builing the staff share internet among other who are willing to pay.
Mobile phone and calling rates are cheap... depends on how much u talk, but then there is also skype etc and some hotels pay u telephone allowance like 200Qr after a certian position.
My experience... in short i am in doha for the last 5 years and im still here because i enjoy my job and the hotel takes good care of me.
Don't count on tips! This is not a big gratuity society!
Mandi
Paying for one meal a day isn't such a biggie...
Ah the internet...that was one of my earlier questions....how is that done? it is expensive?
and mobile phones?
do Managers/Supervisors get tips ? I know they also spoke about incentives in the general ad...
do you mind telling me a bit more in your experience about this?
Island girl... Accomdations are actually free and are pretty good, usually they rent out a whole building... and pls note when they say free food it only means free on duty meals which mean u will have to eat once a day at your own expense... if you go through the contract it will clearly mentioned that you will be required to work in shifts.
Internet is not provided and you have to pay for it at your own expense.
Yes salary's are low but you do make more than your salary as tips and incentives depending on which hotel you work for.
It is Generalized when it comes to Employees of Hotel's out here in Doha...
Free Accommodation, Free Meals, Free Transportation from Work to Accommodation & Vice Versa....
Timings, it depends on your Designation!!!!
Azamat: I am trini..but I do not live there.....and no your presumption is wrong.....not because someone is asking questions in a particular way means they are this or that...I am not familiar with terminology in Qatar, like I wasn't familiar with UK terms - boot = car trunk, flat=apartment, mobile=cellular etc....
i enquired about housing provided by the companies....they also indicated that an option was available for reduced rent on executive accommodation...
why would I want to spend more on transport and living arrangements when I can save more by taking up the company offer of free over paid for..particularly on the onset...
it would be better to get acquainted with the place and then branch out on own wouldn't it?
I know you mean well....thanks for shedding some more light..
It is called exploitation, simple as that!
Island Girl - Seeing that your from Trini I can guarantee you that you'll find this place extremely suffocating and restrictive (unless you are a high professional, which I doubt you are not 'coz you ask about associate / shared housing and company transport).
These jobs are usually filled by far east and south asians. Right now due to the hotel industry boom I have observed that a lot of Africans are coming in too.
I had a good friend of African origin who moved here from a hotel in Dubai. 8 mnths is all that she could take!
Qatarisun: u paint a really dreary picture of working/living in Qatar in the hotel industry....what are the sort of hours they work? how is it different to other countries??
I'm not a big spender anyways..don't do much socialising or going out .....and once I have accommodation/food/way of getting to and from work then I guess it would be fine....(??)
what would be of interest to me would be site seeing and taking opportunity to visit other countries..
when u say stuck for 2 years...if it's not working out at the job you HAVE to stay in it for 2 years? can't you resign and return to your country of origination?
depends on what is "surviving" for you. You have where to live, you have what to eat, they bring you to work and take you back to your accommodation.
THIS is surviving.. other than that.. you cannot afford much on 1200-1500.. even for the saving it's not enough (about 300-400 bucks). Besides, they work long hours, they are under total control. Exit permit is permission of your employer to leave Qatar, which normally isn't hard to get, unless your employeer doesn't want you to leave. then you are stuck here.
Release is reffered to change of the employer. If you found better job in Qatar, it doesn't mean you can easily change it. You will need again to ask for the permission, a NOC letter. And here most of the hotels have policies "No NOC!". So basically you are stuck here for at least 2 years with not too many choices, and regardless to whether or not you like your job..
I am so sorry if I'm asking too much, but I just want to be aware of as much as...
Internet connection: do you pay for it or is it included? any restrictions
Mobile phones: rates, etc...
thanks
I guess they justify the salary as what 'you would have had left' after paying for accommodation, transport, recreation facilities (gym, pool)
can u survive on that though?
what are the hours usually like?
Your employer has the complete discretion on whether or not you can get a multiple -exit visa. But applying for each exit visa usually isn't a real problem. Make sure you get your holidays spelled out or you won't be doing much traveling! Your employer will pay for your visa, exit permits, etc. Yes, the salaries you see are for real. Hotels are notoriously cheap. An American friend of mine with a masters degree was offered $2.12 hour for full-time management.
Mandi
in doing some more searches, I am seeing multiple and single entry...
The cost of a single exit permit is QR10. The cost of a multiple exit permit is QR500, and is valid for one year.
How difficult is it to get a multiple?
@every_mothers: as you said u work in a hotel...what is the accommodation they provide....?
that is roughly £210.00 to £350.00 is this sufficient to survive on in Qatar?
...and what exactly is the exit visa?
say I have some time off and would like to go Oman or Turkey for a visit how does that work?
that's the thing....
During the interview as per the general rule, you don't usually ask all those types of questions....
But I'm sure it must be different and expected in Qatar???
what has your experience been like? what field are u in?
Island Girl Based on my experienced.. all your question must be ask during your interview. i was totally wrong not doing that. But i also know that is not a good idea questioning who's interviewing you, But if you want to secure your life here then you must do it. better be sure than sorry like me :P
salary for which position???
front office or receptionist = 2000-2500QR excluding incentives.
Waitress or House keeping attendent 1200-1500 excluding tips etc
Island girl.... I work for a hotel you may ask what you want to know.
Its entirely depends on the hotel, they can deny you NOC without any reason... which basically means you cant enter the country again for 2 years.
Not sure if its legal or not.... nothing much you can do about it. :P
Not a problem at all.....your questions are also helping me understand what I may be getting into....
I'm quite happy for new experiences, but I wish to know as much as possible before I leap into stuff...
I'm really interested in hearing from anyone who has worked or is working in the hotel industry there..
better to make decisions with some info than no info
and anyone know the salary ranges..please...most of the companies do not disclose on their job postings...
good to know that the accommodation and transport is really free.
what is the state of the accommodation though?
got no real problem with sharing...is it generally with one other person or a group to an apartment ???
forgive my questions...
a release meaning that you cannot leave the country for 2 years?
I'm a bit confused by the terms release and exit visa...
I understand.. but what if you completed 2 years from your employer. lets say i was hired in my home country.what chances of getting release from them and is it legal if they dont even give NOC. coz i have heard to those who resigned from our company didnt get NOC from them (they finished the contract)
Island girl sorry again :D.
its not the law of qatar... but the law of hotels which is subjected to change from hotel to hotel.
if you are local hire... which means you were here on visit visa and then hired by the hotel then your chances of gettin a release are more. If you were hired from you r home country then you have to complete 2 years contract to get a release which can also be denied if you are joining another hotel in qatar.
Sorry to interrupt but is that a law of Qatar, after completing the 2 years company should give NOC or release to their staff?? Is it applicable in every establishment or just in Hotels? Sorry again just curious.
Working for a hotel and getting a exit permit is never an issue... however most hotels in doha dont give u a release which means you cant change your job atleast for the firsr 2 years.
Free on duty meals, free transport, free accomdation, one way ticket is provided every year if u are in manager position then they give round trip.... salary are usually low unless its a managment position and the status of accomdation (single/sharing) depends on your position.
Exit Permit, Company would get it Issued from Ministry of Interior!!!
Then only you can Exit Qatar
can some one explain more about this?
how does it really work? is it hard to get?
thanks for the genuine responses....
what is considered a good salary generally for the following areas:
Front Desk:
General Manager:
Trainee:
is this your attempt at humour???
Hotels provide free accomodation, free meals, free transport, medical etc, Good for ladies. But if it's good salary you can accept that offer
Generally all hotels provide free accomodation, food, transport, uniform & free medical. The salary you are getting is saving. But you accept only good salary offer.
yes, there shall be many tools with your 'seniors' to deal with 'juniors'.
Well if they Offer good Salary then its better and about Accomodation and Transportation it Depends.
Thanks
