The Quran is often misinterpreted and misunderstood. Which is why you will see many misguided Muslims in the world today. Our Prophet himself said that Muslims will divide into more sects than even Christians and Jews!
As for me I have always found my non Muslim mates and associates to be very respectful of my religion. In fact I remember the first time when I got into the abayah my own family was so insulting towards me where else my Buddhist former classmate went out and bought me appropriate clothes to wear under my abayah so I will be comfortable! My husbands mom was here in Qatar for two months and she was so impressed with our way of life and how we took care of her that she is now considering becoming a Muslim. This I believe is the true essence of our faith, whereby we draw people to it rather than turning others away from it!
"....We should, and we also should treat them with utmost respect, politeness and generosity, whereby they will come to know the true beauty of Islam by our actions...."
Agreed..100%
"...As for those verses of the holy Quran, then I will PM you the name of a book which beautifully explains these texts.."
Certainly there are limitations on our association with non Muslims like the fact that Muslim women cannot marry non Muslim men(Muslim men can marry Jews and Christians) and we cannot eat the meat slaughtered by non Muslims(except Jews and Christians. We can eat the meat slaughtered by them)and yes we cannot participate in their religious activities. BUT that doesn't mean to say we don't coexist peacefully with them. We should, and we also should treat them with utmost respect, politeness and generosity, whereby they will come to know the true beauty of Islam by our actions.
As for those verses of the holy Quran, then I will PM you the name of a book which beautifully explains these texts and how they are to be interpreted, and applied in today's times. And trust me it's not as rigid as it appears.
"...It doesn't mean that Allah commanded us to make war against ALL non Muslims and not live in peace with them.."
what you have said is correct; Allah has not commanded us to wage a war unless muslims are oppressed and driven out of their homes etc.; during the reign of prophet and the khalifas the non-muslims were provided protection and they had freedom to practice their religion.
So non-muslims were treated justly under islamic rule and lived peacefully however the above verses refer to having love for non-muslims which is a different thing.
So Islam allows coexistence, however the level of coexistence is also set; For example muslims can't participate in the festivals of disbelievers, they can't marry their children to them, they can't share their secrets and can't have love and friendship with them. This is what is mentioned in the above verse
And yes there are verses in context of muslims being driven out of their homes etc. but there are verses which are general also like 9:23 and 58:33 which clearly prohibit having love and affection for disbelievers even if they are close relatives. If you have a different interpretation for the quoted verse kindly explain.
Religions are now manipulated, I'm just not referring to Islam but to all religions most specially Christians, Catholics and others. . . factors why it is manipulated? could be politics, power, personal interest of the rich and manipulators.
So coexistence should start on us who are educated.
our Prophet is long gone, so are his righteous companions. Today many Muslims are not upon the path of the Prophet, sadly and hence you may see a lot of things happening today among Muslims, even in Muslim countries, that are not really from Islam, but other factors like culture, traditions, etc.
there is no evidence to say the Prophet prevented disbelievers from practicing their faiths. In fact when some Jews once approached him with regards to two of their people who had committed a crime, they were asked to punish them in accordance to the Jewish faith and not the shari'ah.
were revealed to our Prophet with regards to the polytheists and disbelievers at that time, who were wronging the Muslims, oppressing them and waging war against them. It doesn't mean that Allah commanded us to make war against ALL non Muslims and not live in peace with them! There are plenty of evidences from the hadiths of how our Prophet assisted and treated kindly those of other religions. To an extent that it is considered a major sin for a Muslim living in a Muslim land to harm a non Muslim who resides there. Our Prophet, even as the ruler of Mecca, always treated even the Jews, Christians, and polytheists with such kindness and justice that many of them became Muslims due to this reason. Islam is all for coexistence, and being kind to our neighbors even if they are of different faiths.
You (O Muhammad SAW) will not find any people who believe in Allâh and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW ), even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Rûh (proofs, light and true guidance) from Himself. And We will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein (forever). Allâh is pleased with them, and they with Him. They are the Party of Allâh. Verily, it is the Party of Allâh that will be the successful. (Al-Mujadilah 58:22)
O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism, this Qur'ân, and Muhammad SAW), and have driven out the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) and yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allâh your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show friendship to them in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray, (away) from the Straight Path. (Al-Mumtahinah 60:1)
O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliyâ' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliyâ' to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliyâ', then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrongdoers and unjust). (Al-Ma'idah 5:51)
O you who believe! Take not for Auliyâ' (supporters and helpers) your fathers and your brothers if they prefer disbelief to Belief. And whoever of you does so, then he is one of the Zâlimûn (wrong-doers, etc.). (At-Tawbah 9:23)
d^_^b. . . . agree! and I think it is better not to open sensitive topics like religion on every discussions coz it will just raise questions. . . unless were on same religion that would be fine^^
Yes coexist and stop the segregation of beliefs.... No more of this " well MY GOD said" okay... you have your own special God? Really... and the pushing people to convert thing has to stop.... not about wanting to prove people wrong and that you are right.... learned that the hard way....the two topics people will always argue over are politics and religion.... that's where u will find ur true friends lol
according to me ,best religion is humanity!i have seen many people who pray regularly n go temple, church, mosque regularly but wen it comes to help some1 they become selfish, they beat their wife or enter into quarrel often, reading religious books or visiting is not enough,i feel we need to practice it in our lives.now as we leave our home country n settle in a foreign land ,we need to educate ourself n our children about humanity, respect each other.some people only make bg claims but have a rotten heart.May GOD give insight to every1.
And we should. If a Muslim truly followed his/her faith, then they will know and accept that coexisting with other faiths peacefully is very much a part of our faith. Our Prophet did so up until his death and so did his rightly guided companions. Whilst it is our duty to call people to Islam whenever we can, we are not supposed to mistreat and harm those who those who reject our call. Rather we must always be a good example to them by treating them in the most polite of manners and helping them whenever possible regardless of whether they accept our advises or not.
And yes my family, just like Snessy's is a good example of coexistence. We have all the possible faiths(except for Jews) even among my most closest of family and we all are very much united, and even if we have had our differences and good o'l family spats, faith was never a reason for that!
Athiest : Who follows a 'Book of Rules' at road, hospital, air port, immigration counters, school / college, hotel / restaurent, marriage party etc, work place, drinking clubs, play grounds, means since birth to death a certain discipline is maintained as per society's requirement or tolerance .
the problem is practicing your belief FREELY/OPENLY without the danger of being arrested. But what I wonder is, it is a fundamental teaching of theirs in their book, the Holy Quran.
When we see each other as human beings and not see each other for colour, race or religion first, then there will be peace and coexistence..Not before..
I'm not becoming racist but i find arab's r having trouble with this issue, they are not even ready to accept other religious people, am not saying out blind i have arab friends who hates people from other religious sects...As tinker states India is the best example just because we are seeing other sects rights from our childhood and not taught to hate others based on religion...
to think of it we are all co-existing as it is... a good example of interfaith co-existence can be seen in the most abused democracy of the world (i say that because people there enjoy democracy more than countries that came up with the idea of democracy) ... INDIA
but ofcourse like how siblings argue and quarrel you cant expect interfaith masses not to get in a fight once in a while... but all in all i think its co-existence
We can't co-exist easily because there are people who don't "live and let live" and respect other peoples beliefs and opinions. Some are here on this forum sadly.
We Muslims follow our Quran, that is our law, and that is our life, we bow to the one and only Allah (SW) only.and we live our life based on our Quran and this is the instruction from God.
*****
now think about Jewish people, did they follow their scripture (Thorah) NO.. did you know their God name that is also ALLAH (SW). if they follow their Thorah then they have to follow Islam, Quran and the teaching of our belowed Prophet (PBUH), bcoz thorah very clearly mentioned about the oneness of Allah and the coming prohpet Muhammad(PBUH)
****************
now Christianity, did they follow as per the Bible (Injeel) No. eventhough every year they are revising the bible to cop up the current situation they fail.
just ask the follower of the Christianity how many % following the Bible as such or the teaching of Jesus christ (Isa (PBUH)).
if christian wants to follow as per the teaching of bible, then they also need to change to as Muslim, they also mentioning about the ALLAH (SW) and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). did you know, did ever Jesus Christ told the deciples that he is the God and worship him. a BIG NO (as per the continues revised bible) instead he said Bow to Allah (SW) only.

then coming to Hinduism, they have millions of God's, they worship anything everything in the world.
But if you ask any hindu (as per my tiny knowledge) 99% of the Hindus doesnt study the hindu religion as such, they never even seen the hindus scripture (4 vedas).
In vedas it is clearly mentioned what is GOD and how it be worshiped. but the majority of Hindus doesnt follow as per their authentic scripture.
as per hindu scripture. the God, is described as such like, He cannot see by the naked eyes, he dont have any wife, son or father or Mother., he dont have any painting, nobody in this world seen him.
and the God also said, If anybody worship to any Idol, picture, as such a God then he will enter to the darkness of the hell.
and if anyone worship other than this as a God (like, fire, wind, lighting, animals, weather sun, moon etc). he will enter more darkness than the above.
*******
Conclusion:- when we the Muslims try to follow our religion, people doesnt like.
eg:
as per the red letter bible where jesus himself said, do not drink wine, and dont eat pork.
when we follow this commandment (it is in Quran also) they dont like. eventhough they dont follow their own scripture...
In order to coexist you need to have a live and let live attitude. Sadly, religion doesn't really promote that. It's more of a "live our way or burn in hell" attitude.
BG: Everyone believes they are right, and they want everyone to believe that too, whether they like it or not.
TB: I’ve been to India a number of times, was quite an experience for me. Exactly like in the movies LOl GOSH I WAS NEVER DISAPPOINTED!
But yeah totally agree with you. When it comes to freedom of social liberties and practicing one’s religion India is way up there on a pedestal. . Wish everyone would just follow the example of India, and leave each other alone and not try to force their religion down there throat.
People who are open to different religions can coexist..It's the ones who think their own religion is the be all and end all who can't..Religion can be a good thing..Just a shame it's the cause of hatred and wars

The Quran is often misinterpreted and misunderstood. Which is why you will see many misguided Muslims in the world today. Our Prophet himself said that Muslims will divide into more sects than even Christians and Jews!

This must be why the Arabic teachers keep themselves to themselves. Now I understand why they will not mix with english staff.

Nice Video.
Hi snessy...yeah, it is. Such is life, eh? Best to ignore those people. Let them stew in their own self righteousness. ;)

Why? Simple, just read this thread.
add ...people 'who don't pray' also along side ethnocentric, egocentric and arrogant etc....
The message of all religions is supposed to be compassion, spirituality and morality.
...People who become ethnocentric, egocentric and arrogant are obviously missing the whole point of Faith.
Well said sajmarhab n fatimah....even i wanted to point out something, but u ppl already did it...:):)
Molten Metal:
An atheist insists to be called what??
If you look back at history, there was a time when in Jerusalem , all three religions co-existed peacefully and the people complimented each other.
It can do so again, but there are too many external forces trying to create differences..
A doctor : Who practices whole life a profession to be called a doctor .
An atheist : Who does not do any practice but insists to be called one.
And a big(virtual) group hug it is!
Very well said Fathima. Good for you :)

because while some of us are taught to coexist, others are indoctrinated not to.

Its not just the danger of being arrested, it is also about offending and hurting others by disrespecting their belief's and opinions.
learn n understand Quran u will stop wondering

@ Miss Mimi..I thought the exact same thing!
Let's all be one together, race or religion does not matter. Let's share the good times as well as the bad and don't disrespect your fellow human.
I think it's quite obvious from some of the above posts why we'll never co-exist.
