Cost of Living in Doha, Qatar
My company is opening its regional in Doha and want me to settle here with my family (wife + 2 kids). Its a IT consulting firm and my job would be to manage different projects with various clients here. Here is my current status:
* I am a Computer Science graduate and associate with this company since last 7 years.
* My current salary is good enough to have a decent life in Karachi. But I am not able to save anything after the month.
* One of my two kids is school going. Their ages are 6 and 1.5 years old.
* I also have Australian Immigration. I went there for few months but return back as I was not able to find any job. I do have plan to settle back in Melbourne after 4 years.
* I am currently in Doha for a small assignment for 2 months.
I am willing the accept this offer from my company with only one objective in mind that is after arriving here, I must be able to save at least QR 4000 per month.
Now, based on above story, I have few queries and would appreciate if somebody have living experience here can answer answer those:
Question 1:
What sort of package should I demand from my employer as based on my research I am thinking of QR15,000 / month + Accommodation. The Accommodation would be a furnished apartment as I do not want to invest in furniture etc.
Question 2:
I have done some research on internet and prepare the below list of expenditure. Is this OK? Do I have missed anything?
Expense Details
Groceries - QTR3500
Car + Petrol - QTR2000
Phone + Mobile - QTR200
Internet - QTR200
Water - QTR200
Electricity - QTR200
TV Cabel - QTR300
School Fees (for 1 kid) - QTR2000
School Van (for 1 kid) - QTR300
Total - QTR8900
Question 3:
I am planning to live here for 4 years and save maximum money. What sort of living standard should I maintain so that I can save minimum QR4000 per month.
Looking for some sincere advices.
Regards,
Is it possible to buy a liter of full-fat milk anywhere for QR4? I've read on various expat cost of living blogs/sites that a liter of milk in Doha is QR6 and was wondering if this is in fact true.
Being_Human or anyone else: Was there at one time a search function for the QL forum?
Another question for the QL community: Are RPs valid on average for two or more years? In the UAE the average is three years.
There is no such thing as a permanent position, everyone here is on contract and 1-2 year RPs.
Mandi
How many years of experience do you have?
Also, do you mind telling us the name of company? If its a local Pakistani company, then be careful.
This is a permanent position (not contract) and no school fees is not included in the package. Only thing company will support is the rent of the apartment/house.
Have the company include school fees with your package
not bad as a first contract, worth a try.
the main question is kids school fees.
next contract u will know exactly what u need.
The salary is confirmed. Its QR15,0000 per month + a furnished flat (3 bedrooms) + full medical with family (wife + 2 kids) + 10% provident fund... The post is Service Manager in an IT firm.
How it sounds? Should I accept it.
Also, can anybody confirm what are the rate of taxes here?
Regards

How should you do it
All the best
I work in DOHA
I live in Sydney
Salary of QR 15000 plus Accomadation is a good deal.
electricity and water for 200-300
phone+internet+cabletv for 250
Expenses would depend on your lifestyle. You haven't mentioned much. For a reasonable lifestyle you would need about QR 4000 a month plus school fees. School fees vary widely between Pakistani schools and other international schools.
Please type "cost of living in doha" in search column in QL. You will have floods of answers!
