If people

If people paid attention to their own attitude and intolerance as much as they do to what other people wear or have in their pants, our world would be a better place....non?

2020 Olympics: "Why is it that telling someone to be more conservative is oppressive but telling someone to the values of the liberal is seen as not being oppressive. To me both are oppressive."

Sorry, but generally speaking, a liberal should not tell you what to wear, so I don't see any oppression in that. Unless you don't understand the definition of liberalism.

Nomerci: well said!

It is not necessarily religion. It is the abuse of power as a means of controlling the populace.

Respective other peoples views is not oppressive, calling for people to be punished because hey don't adhere to your conservative views is oppressive. Unfortunately when these people get into government, Iran, Saudi etc they oppressive all residents if they do not conform to what they believe to be correct. For example women attending football matches in Iran are banned. Do they really not have more important things to do as a government that police football matches looking for women who may have sneaked in? Why deny such a simple freedom.

You speak about atheism as its a belief system, it's like saying not playing tennis is a hobby. Oooo I'm really into my hobby I don't play tennis all the time!

isnt this what the atheists also do? Stop interfering in the lives of others, others will stop interfering in your life.

The basic problem is, everyone thinks they are right and the religious believe they are the most right about everything.

Tolerance is one thing that everyone preaches but very few people demonstrate.

The scary things is the intolerant religious (and luckily they are few in the more developed parts of the world these days) believe killing or persecuting those that do not follow the same belief system is a good thing and they will be rewarded.

For example I do not care much for homosexuals but why the need to call for them to be killed!

It seems people with very little going on in their own little lives seem to worry about what everyone else is doing...I like to think of them as busybodies.

Babu, I would say the majority of people don't care. a few raise their voices against it.

But please, can we stay on topic now?

Prism, I posted something that I believe in. My opinion is that everybody has the right to wear clothing of their choice. I do not care what other people wear, what gender they fall in love with...what gender they are or are not.

Makes no difference to me.

BUT, there are , apparently, a lot of people who care very much about these things.

nomerci...it doesn't matter who is she and what is she. Whatever she did is inline with your post unless you have someone or something specific to direct the post at. BTW don't many of us here continuously criticize the abaya worn by the local women or say muslim women (who wear it) in general....IMO by wearing it they are doing no harm to anyone or are they.

By nomerci• 22 May 2012 16:08

Stealth, and even if that was her aim...does she not have the right to do this?

And how do liberals deny the freedom of expression?

By discussing different opinions? By not agreeing to other opinions?

By stealth• 22 May 2012 16:06
stealth

the so called liberals when criticised say there is a denial of freedom of expression which in turn is also what they do...

By stealth• 22 May 2012 16:05

if the lady is muslim or whatever, all she did was to try to stir up some emotions and then there is the so called liberals who are ready to jump in saying freedom of expression.

By nomerci• 22 May 2012 15:59

Prism, I don't agree, the lady is Muslim and an artist. She, through art, peaceful means, wanted to highlight her opinion.

She was not criticizing anything or anybody.

Thanks but no thanks AP, I prefer to have a choice and not to be brain washed by any one religion - Rather take wht is preached the same/similar in all the books and live according to that - at lease I know that almost identical ideologies will have come from similar sources.
