UPDATE: Doha fails to make Olympic shortlist

Doha will not be the host of the 2020 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has announced.

Per analyst predictions, the IOC has decided to cut Doha and Baku before it enters the final decision-making phase, officials announced in a press conference held Wednesday evening (early Thursday morning for us) in Quebec City.

That means Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul will vie for hosting rights until the IOC announces its final decision in September 2013.

now the FIFA MAY hold the world cup in winter, but SUMMER olympics ...

can u imagine attendance numbers in stadium in summer, with 6 or 7 competitions running at the same time in different venues of 40k + seats each?

Its obviously a conspiracy against a nation trying to enter the world stage..

Apart from not having Aspire, Spain's economy is near collapse, Japan is still counting the cost of the Quake and Turkey is .... well Turkey. The only choice was Doha :O)

Is anyone really surprised?

With the current infrastructure that Qatar has I still can't believe they got the world cup, which is normally hosted in 4 or so different Cities each 5 or 10 times the size of Doha. And the Olympics is even more complicated, with all the different venues etc. How would they do the Marathon for instance? Air condition 26 miles of road?

After the Salt Lake City scandal, the I.O.C made changes to make it very difficult to bribe officials into voting... Unlike Fifa who are ridiculously corrupt!

That was due to technical reason, bidding for olympic is not just about money, which Qatar is over qualified but it should consider also internal structures such as those horizontal & vertical infrastructure projects, untill now still under construction. 2020 is only 8 yrs from now & nobody knows that this become 100% when the time come.

By anonymous• 24 May 2012 07:51

.. and in good ol' Gulf tradition, Qatar should now fire all the expatriates who worked their a.s.s. off and failed!
