Qatar Gherkin Best tower..grt Design....

Doha's striking Burj Qatar was named the best tall building in the Middle East at the annual awards of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH).

The cylindrical tower, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, is similar in form to Foster + Partners' 30 St Mary Axe
in London, dubbed 'the gherkin'.

Unlike Foster's building, the façade of Burj Qatar is constructed of multi-layered patterns which mimic traditional Islamic sun screens.

The solar screens (mimicking traditional carved wooden mashrabiyas) are impossible to keep clean and can often be wonderful perches for the pigeons.

I'm all for some striking architecture but it should also be fit-for-purpose. This one isn't - IMO. Just an usual shape.

Got to agree - Toronado Tower is much better. Reminds me of a Mandruzzato glass vase ... :O)

Yeah Nomerci... That one can easily be Doha's best Tower... something similar to the FIFA World cup trophy

I actually like the one next to it on the right side with the blue criss cross...that looks really good!

Sadly, the ordinary person in the street does not know that its an engineering marvel. He/she sees the design and aesthetics of the building...

It reminds me of something... a rocket...

hey Brit... the engineers had a tough time to get that erection up especally since it has no centre column to support it... it is considered an engineering marvel.... ;)

even without lights it is a burden to eyes.

Plus the "Sun screens" are prone to getting dusty..

totally agree Brit, the Gerkin is far more interesting, this is an eye sore!! Tornado Tower has far more arch merit.

I find it a dull and un-interesting structure. The London Gherkin is much more pleasing to the eye..

Fathimah, I am with you on that. BUT, it does remind me of something else than a wasp hive....:P

My son once asked me..."why did they put a giant willie here?" :P:P:P

Guess I must be a minority then, but I find the whole look of this building to be truly icky specially when unlit. It reminds me of a wasp hive and seeing it always makes my flesh crawl! Maybe it's just me then.

Oh and what are: Islamic sun screens?? How can a sun screen be Islamic? Halal sun screen? Perhaps the word should be traditional Arabic style.
