Two days in Doha
Hi ladies and gents,
I'll be in Doha for two days (by choice!) while on my way to Europe, on 19th and 20th September.
I'm an itinerant Yorkshureman in my forties. Any ideas what to see and do to occupy my time while I'm there? I know that you are probably going to advise me to do a search for tourist attractions etc, but I'm looking for a taste of what expats get up to there.
Does anyone want to meet up at some stage in the two days I'm there to show me what it's like to live in Qatar rather than seeing the usual 'sights'?
Cheers,
Mark
I've finally arrived.
Not much luck with the dune bashing, unfortunately - none of the commercial ventures seem to have any customers at present, so they all want to charge me the single person rate which is a bit steep.
Would anyone want to meet up for a bite to eat either tonight or tomorrow night, or have a wander round the Souk? I'm staying at the Edzan.
Cheers,
Mark
Ladies and gentlemen of the forum - you're all stars! Your responses are much appreciated.
The idea of dune bashing is exactly what I was hoping someone would suggest. Any idea how easy it is to arrange? Is anyone in this forum into this lunatic activity? If so, would you be willing to take an inquisitive Yorkshireman for a trip in the desert on the 19th or 20th of this month?
The food sounds as if it's worth exploring. Does anyone want to meet up for a bite to eat? One night of good local food and another night of Indian, I think.
I've already had an offer from a local gent who has offered to show me around Doha for a few hours, too.
I also need to book a hotel for a couple of nights. Something mid-range, within walking distance (if possible) of the areas that I'm likely to want to go to. Any suggestions?
This Doha stopover is turning into a lot more than I expected!
Thanks once again.
Camels & Date Trees:)
thats refreshing :)

And don't forget to bring lots of money with you. Except for the walk on the Corniche everything else costs!
Luckily you are arriving as the weather is getting a little cooler. Here are a few things you might do on your brief visit:
You could go fishing, there are numerous charters available.
Go to the inland sea and experience desert driving.
There are mangrove swamp kayak tours.
Numerous bars and clubs including jazz bars.
Many excellent restaurants service local fare.
Many many very cheap restaurants serving, eat with your fingers, Indian food - best you will ever get outside india.
Go down to Souq Wagif, have a look at the falcon souq, or just sit and watch life go by over a great tea or coffee or three. Smoke a bit of shisha if you want to shorten your life in a pleasant way.
Cinemas showing movies very similar to what you would find anywhere else.
Great shopping centres if you are into that sort of thing.
Ice skating in City Centre shopping Centre.
The Katara area where you can swim on the beach and explore a little of Qatari culture.
Go to the Pearl and check out the way some people think life is meant to be.
Walk along Al Corniche, chat to the Indian anglers on the wharf, talk to the professional fishermen sellign their catch, or catch a boat across to West Bay.
There is also theatre but I am not sure what is on at the moment.
Pretty much nothing to do in Doha... NOT.
I kep a blog as life unfolds here for us. Feel free to have a look...

book yourself at a nice hotel and take a book or two and enjoy the pool and beverages, restaurants in the Hotel and bar in the hotel only
one evening go to the Souq and have a shisa (food you better take in the Hotel)
thats it, bring sun lotion for the pool
well you could do a safari and some dune bashing if you never been here
but that's about it
Well it depends on you on how to budget your time here in qatar. try to experience everything here.ride a camel or do motor racing in sealine...
