Home around expat community 2 dogs & baby due

HI all,

My pregnant wife and I and our 2 big dogs will be moving to Qatar at the beginning of January. I will be working for Qatargas in the north. As British expats we currently live in Kuwait we've been here 6 years and are hoping to have a similar life in Qatar as we have had a great time in KuwaIt.

We are looking for accommodation options close to work where there is an british or western expat community. Can you share some details please for example locations i need to be looking in. Preferably at least 3 bedroom with maids room. A garden or court yard for the dogs and the use of a pool would be an advantage. Hope you can help.

We are also looking for advice on doctors and hospitals for delivery of our baby in March.

Kind regards
Dan

Unfortunately i think we'll have to look around this area and pay the price.

With regards to Hospitals so far my wife has spoken to a few people and Al-Ahli seems the place to be. She has a few recommendations for doctors there as well.

We did see a very nice town house on the Pearl but it didn't have the amenities included. We at least want access to a pool and gym ideally.

Very pricy... A 3 BR apartment including Bills is about 18k PCM. Villas in the pearl are expensive. Did u look at hospitals?

So sorry only just seen this. We had a great 4 days. You were right though eid screwed the property search right up. We now know where we need to be but haven't found the perfect place.

We need to be on the pearl on in westbay. So I have easy access to the road to al khor. If anyone knows of a min 3 bedroom villa on compound, town house we'd love to hear more about it.

Just got your message, it is Eid this weekend and you will struggle to get people during the week.

Try Gharrafah, Duhail, Westbay. Email me when u r in Doha

@Cindielouisa, Thanks we'd probably try that. Although currently i'm struggling to find sites that have property on unless its through an agent. Do you know of anywhere to look? We're heading to Qatar next weekend for 4 days to have a look around, relocation companies want to charge a lot to show us around areas and homes.

Is there another option?

Although it s a piece of mind, but look yourself and avoid paying agency fees.....rent a furnished apartment for a month or so and then find a home. Your choice! Take it directly from the landlord and ask around...all the best

George at Homes to Rent, telling him what you are looking for, he is bound to have something for you.

Find out if you will be working in Ras Laffan or at headoffice in town first, so you know a general direction to tell H2R.

You canon month by month like the Marriott, Ezdan, others in the city. They are reasonably priced and very welcoming with all facilities available. Reasonable commute to QG.

There are hotel/apartments - the Marriott has one near City Centre. But they're not cheap. I'd advise you to maybe check out tripadvisor.com to see if you can find any recommendations that way if no one here can help.

Can you just clarify for me, you mean. once i arrive it is possible to get a short term let while we find suitable accomodation? I had heard that most villas require a payment 1 year in advance??

Another resource for your wife is www.expatwoman.com - the Qatar forums.

Don't try and secure until you physically come....a furnished apartment for a month then take your time...

This is great people. We really appreciate everyones help.

Is there an area on the out skirts which is mostly British or Western Expats, or is everywhere mixed? Would my wife be close to groups for new western mothers, does anybody know of such a group she could get in touch with?

A 30 minute drive isn't unreasonable i'm doing more than this now, 40 minutes is a little to much, this is our first child so I was hoping to be close to home.

Regards

Dan

The Qatargas accommodation is in Al Khor, but it's so full that lots of staff working in Ras Laffan live in Doha and commute via private vehicle or via Company provided buses. Your best option is either to live in Doha or outskirts and commute to Ras Laffan. I'm sure you can find someone to share transport with if you chose to stay in Doha.

As for Hospitals, Al Ahli is the hospital Qatargas sends it staff to so that would probably be your best option. However, I have a friend that had emergency C-Section at 31 weeks due to pre-eclamsia and she delivered at Hamad. She said they were really great and she had a room to herself. They are also much cheaper than Al Ahli.

Dear Dan,

The only available place in north shall be living qatar gas own accomodations. In Qatar if you want to be social, you need to live in or around outskirts Doha, otherwise you can live in suburbs like Um Salaal, Dukhan but these are not in city and anywhere you live, you will need atleast 30 to 40 minutes drive to go to work and back but good thing will be that you will be going out of city and opposite of traffic and vice versa in evening so no need to worry. Good luck for your job and life here.

I see, so there isnt an area in the north then. Most people live on the outskirts of Doha and comute?

If i was an employee of qatar gas where are the compounds that they use?

Thanks for your replys, its all helpful

By the way...the best hospital for the delivery is Al Ahlia if you want to be present at the Birth. You could look in West Bay for villas also, a bit pricy though..

Hi

You need to look in Duhail or Khuratyat. Villas are cheap and not too far from the City and the hospital. It takes you approx. 30 minutes to Ras Laffan., QG.

Good luck with the move....you will enjoy it here.

Hi Dan

As I don't know exactly where you'll be located it's hard to comment. But if you are living in or on the outskirts of Doha proper and commuting to say Dukhan or Al Khor for work you'll mostly be going against the traffic, but still be fairly mobile within Doha proper (again, given the traffic). Qatar is a VERY small community compared with other GCC countries. If you and your wife are looking for a more ongoing support system, you'd want to be located closer to Doha rather than further out.

That said, if you are able to get accomodation within your employer's "circle" - i.e. RasGas in Dukhan your wife will find it easier to find a social circle and social activities.

My suggestion, ask if there is someone your wife can contact (someone's wife who is here and established) at QatarGas so she can ask questions that are more specific for you and the missus.

Good luck.

Thanks marycatherine

I'll be contracted to them so i'll be receiving an allowance.

I understand about the drive which is why I don't want to be far away from home. What i'm looking for is "where" do i need to be looking for a home so the traffic doesn't mean i have to leave an hour and half before work starts.

Thanks for replying,

regards

Dan

Sorry but doesn't Qatargas offer housing rather than an allowance? A lot of expats use Al Ahli Hospital especially if Dad expects to be present. One good thing about Qatar is you're never very far from a beach - and if you go early in the morning 5 or 6, puppy will get a chance to play and swim.

Nothing is far away in terms of physical distance, but traffic is horrific depending on the time of day (as are the various driving "habits") If you're coming from Kuwait you may feel you're prepared, I'd advise to sit back and observe. I've lived in 3 GCC countries in the past 12 years and Qatar is the worst for driving and getting worse if anything in the past year.
