civil engineer / highways - fair package?

Hello

I'm british, married with a kid (one year old), western educated with an MEng in Civil Engineering. Chartered with 8 years UK experience in highway design engineering.

I'm going to be offered approx 35k QAR per month working as highways engineer (consultancy). This is a full package, so no additional accommodation ot transportation allowance. Will get flights (once per year) and medical for me and my family on top of 35k QAR.

Is this package fair for someone with my experience?

Your help will be appreciated!

I agree with Michael. 35K is a good package PROVIDED you get your childs tuition fee covered. Most companies dont provide accomodation. They just pay an allowance which must be mentioned in the Contract.

Considering British lifestyle it might be difficult if you are planning a lavish living.

8 years experience is nothing. i am sure the first two years of your experience was just your beginning years.

I am giving all these comments considering a masters degree. I have a masters degree myself in Engineering from UK.

A good two bed furnished apartment cannot cost more than 8K/9K unless you want to live in the ZigZag Towers, Pearl or some place that expensive. If you are planning for a Villa then its a different story.

Always remember that we move to another country since living in our home countries wasnt easy for us.

Food expenses not more than 5K if you are used to eating at restaurants.

What else is there to spend in this place guys?

Maybe movies every weekend? Designer accessories?

A good car with a loan cannot be more than 4K to 5K per month.

Utilties and other expenses 1K or a little more.

You are still left with more than 10K for a good saving with which someone can repay their mortgage back home.

If someone can prove to his/her Employer that he/she is good at what they do, getting a good raise in a year is probable.

Just make sure you are provided with education allowance and paid trips.

Bachus How can you say "it would be very difficult to live on 32k, ?

You need to relise not everyone lives just like your lifestyle, some are content with 32k, many are content with less and would claim they live happily.

One thing is for sure, UK Tax & UK Weather would definitely outweigh any underselling of ones salary ! thats for sure.

Give me 32K any day !

If your kids are in school, it would be very difficult to live on 32k, unless their tuition and your housing is included.

As a Traffic Safety Manager, I was offered 32,000 with fully loaded car + Mobile + flight.

Not sure if that's good and I'm not Chartered.

BTW, is 32,000 ok? lol - Not made my decision yet. Planning to come without family, settle in and then ask for a rise (may be).

Michael--you're clearly under-selling yourself. That's your choice.

I'm simply giving advice based on my own experience and cost of living.

I am british a british chartered architect earning in the low40s.

I have 12 years experience. I pay my own school fees and housing

I have 2 kids at school and i save a good amount each month and we live a good lilifestyle. So not sure what your talking about.

Id be earning more than half my current salaty in the uk after tax.

Again 50-70 is a dream salary for 8 years experience in engineering and if you request 70 they will laugh at you.

Thanks.

I'm not exaggerating. ANY British professional with experience and a family should not come for less that 35k base PLUS housing, school, etc.

It would be a tough lifestyle, and you'd save nothing. If these guys want to make excuses for their poor salaries and negotiating skills, let them, but don't repeat their mistakes.

Do not listen to them

I am working in the same field

Working in reputed company, my British colleagues with same ur qualifications and +12 years exp. Getting 35k full package

I felt u should know all the guys who suggesting and tell no its too low, most of them not gaining what they are asking you no negotiate for :)…. 50 – 70k for god sake this is our director salary and he is British as well

Ur offer is tax free no need for school fee u can live a decent life with saving money as well.. grab it man it’s good offer for your qualification

I think many on this forum exaggerate salaries. 35k for 8 years experience is a pretty good offer. Not great but perfectly acceptable dependant on your lifestyle. I am sorry guys but 50-70k for somebody with 8 years in engineering is way off. You’re not painting a accurate picture at all. May be somebody senior in investment banking or oil/gas can get in that range. May be if you’re in engineering at very senior/director level again you will be looking at 60-70+.

if you want a 2bed place you can probably find something decent in the region of 7-8k per month (you can get a 3 bed apartment for 10k). No school fees, add another 2k for a car. another 1k for all utilities etc.. so you’re talking 10-12k.

So that leaves around 23-25 for your living expenses, again you could potential make some decent savings dependant on your lifestyle.

It’s a decent offer, all depends on the job itself and what your reason for coming out are.

Hope this helps.

Are you serious guys? 8yrs experience, MEng, CEng ICE, british gets QR45-70 in doha working as highway/senior highway engineers?

I have honestly thought that these figures are reserved for someone with 10+ years of experience (senior level positions).

I doubt they will be prepared to pay QR45...anyway will try to negotiate.

Once again thanks.

You'll need about 20.000 for rent, utilities, and transport. You can eat for 15.000. But: I would come here if they paid 70.000!

Your Kid is 1yr old, so no worries for school unless you want to send him/her to a nursery and that will not cost much.

I would say if you could negotiate with your employer for accommodation allowance say about 10K then you will be fine.

Schoolfees for a one-year old? When do children go to school in Qatar?

Survival offer dude....50/50

Obviously the offer is low. Not too many highways are engineered in this town, which explains the under appreciation of this profession.

By Bachus• 18 Oct 2012 05:41
Bachus

Absolutely not. Over half of your income would be eaten up by rent and utilities. School fees would take another chunk, and the rest would be enough to cover food and transportation. A more reasonable offer would be this as base salary and then free accommodation and schooling on top.

Good luck.
