When I came over last year we packed our entire house and shipped it over in a 20ft container.
When it arrived it was searched by customs and they removed 2 buddha ornaments. They opened a few of the boxes and searched them. One of the boxes had a digital camera in which had disapeared by the time the shipment reached us! This is not uncommon apparently. Also be aware that if you are bringing DVD's etc some may get confiscated.
If you are shipping your goods in a container it is worth noting that they will not release it from the port unless you have your RP.
you shipping stuff over? A colleague recently got her african statue thingie smashed by customs since they thought it was a buddha (you can't bring religious items i think? not sure) so be careful if you're bringing any statues :)
There are ok grocery stores but I cannot find everything in any one of them so I visit different ones for different things - if I knew better, I wouldve packed some ingredients that i use the most (non-perishable, of course) which are not so easy to find here.
There are live bands on tonight at Admiral's Club (located at the Ritz Carlton). Starts at 8pm, 30QR. It was pretty good when I went last time. Admiral's is a nice place to hang out at the weekend... pub atmosphere, by the water, not too rowdy :) Or Shehrazad at the Radisson (formerly Ramada) also has a pub feel, if you're looking for something casual and not too glitzy. The Belgian Cafe, as mentioned by ZuperZue, is also nice and relaxed.
I guess it is all a matter of trying and finding. West Bay is supercool. Yeah, of course join the QL group and alternatively check with the Doha Clubbing Authority at facebook (doha.clubbingauthority) - Have fun!

There are few places in the hotels; but actually there is no real night life in dull Doha.
