Expats Absolutely Love the Qatari Summer
Let's see where this thread leads?
Nasser Al-Khater, the director of communications and marketing for the 2022 World Cup, referred in an interview to the fact that Qatar was still preparing for a summer World Cup.
Now, this thread is not about the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar; it happened and it is was it is. Rather I was taken aback by his statements praising the virtues of the Qatari summer itself.
He said:
"Yes, the temperatures in Qatar can be very warm in the summer, however, it has never stopped people from going about their lives.
"It has never stopped people going out at night, it has never stopped people going to the beaches, it has never stopped people from ... going about their jobs and their daily lives.
"It's something that everybody has lived with in this country and you know that the majority of the people living in this country are non-Qataris, so we have a lot of foreign ex-pats that live here.
"We have a lot of Westerners that live here and they absolutely love it in the summers."
Would you say this is true of your experience?
Are you an expat that 'absolutely loves it in the summer?' I don't know because I always leave for the most part of July and August. Don't a lot of Qataris also leave during the summer months?
Again, this is not a thread about the World Cup bid or an anti-Qatar thread, the country can't help its weather!
Are you an expat or local that loves the summer? If so why and what do you do? Conversely, do you dread the summer? How do you survive it?

Are you kidding Brit? I don't go outside to get a tan!
Come on, people do love to spend the summer in Qatar and winters in Siberia.
Admit it. The summer does do wonders for the tan.
There are many things I love about Qatar, but the summer is not one of them. In fact the summer is the only time of the year that I don't want to live here anymore!
Expat love the summer here, as there is less competition in the Bars..:)
Expats also love the NOC, exit permits and a permission letter from your employee for nearly everything. It's let them know their place in society
I seriously don't think a bunch of Western expats told him they love the summers in Qatar. Rather, he is used to the media not disagreeing with or checking anything he says. Welcome to the world.
A 50 degC summer here too much hot Bai...can half cook all eggs. These expatriates who said comfort, could be hypocrites to please their host.
The only reason I love the Qatar summer is that I get to go away for much of it.
It's unbearably hot, and only a moron would go to a beach after about 9am. Having said that, the traffic is much better in summer, because everyone who can leave does.
How many Celsius degrees does "very warm" has? Is 40 Celsius under "very warm" summer?
i've only been here for almost two months and I can safely say these cool days are our summer days back home.
then again, we live in igloos and when our freezers are full, we just open the back door and place it in the wall of snow lol.
damn i miss the cold :( it shouldn't frikin hit 35 degrees when we're almost into December!
How well you know me by now! Seriously...Many westerners absolutely love the summer in Qatar? That's some revelation really. Should go down a real treat with all those who were lobbying for a winter world cup!
Thats true, Qatari waters are great for scuba diving during these months...
Something tells me this is a bit of a pet peeve of yours, no?
Expats also love aggressive driving, qataris In Land cruisers, queue jumpers in supermarkets, shopping malls burning down and killing their kids, family days at the malls when brown men can't get in and being told if you don't like it you can leave.
Would you say this is true of your experience? NO!
Are you an expat that 'absolutely loves it in the summer? Certainly not!
How do I survive it? Keep reminding myself again and again of God's blessings(ex:how much better off we are from our predecessors..we have aircons, fridges etc!) and keep making resolutions with myself that come winter I will not whine about the cold! Other than that I just avoid going outdoors in the daytime as much as possible.
I am honestly yet to meet even one expat, Westerner or non Westerner, who "loves" the summer. But hey..what would I know,eh? I'm no director of communications and marketing for the 2022 World Cup, hence my opinions and notions are probably flawed!
Gotta love this bit:
"Yes, the temperatures in Qatar can be very warm in the summer, however, it has never stopped people from going about their lives" Certainly Mr Al Khater, but that's cos we are human beings after all..we can't really hibernate all summer now,can we? Now, does that prove that we love the summers? No,it dosen't!
The World Cup is traditionally played mostly in June with the Final early July. I reckon for 2022 they will start earlier than usual and aim to finish the tournament before the end of June.
Right said Penny :)
Well he is the director of marketing and communication. Positive spin!
The summer is only just about bearable because so many Qatari's leave the country, which means the roads are not quite so awful!
The summer is just about bearable. By the way, Platini has already stated that he supports a winter tournament.
the best summer I have is the winter in Qatar
I love the winter in Qatar. I survive the summer.
