Another tragedy. Little souls lost. May they rest in peace and may their loved ones find the strength to bear their loss.....

At least 47 kindergarten pupils have been killed in Egypt after a train hit their bus. The death toll may rise as the victims are being accounted for.

The bus was carrying more than 50 children aged between four and six, local media report.

Doctors say the between seven and 11 wounded were being treated in two different hospitals, many with severed limbs.

One witness told AP the train pushed the buss along the tracks for nearly a kilometer. Books, school bags and other personal possessions are lying scattered along the horrific scene along with those killed. Many of the remains are beyond recognition.

Apparently the railroad crossing in the town of Manfalut in the Asyut province, south of the capital Cairo was not closed for car traffic as the train sped towards it.

Transport Minister Rashad al-Metini and the head of the Egyptian Railway Authority have resigned in the wake of the accident, the report said.

It ain't rocket science folks. Train tracks carry trains. Trains are heavy. Trains don't stop too bad.

Did the bus driver stop and look before he crossed the tracks or did he just try to beat the train? Let's wait and see!

Yes, the reports said the barriers were open so the bus driver went ahead but surely you can see or hear a train this close?

Apparently, the attitude towards safety is very lax in Egypt and people can be frequently seen crossing the railway tracks when a train is approaching on every Egyptian station, As per a BBC report I was listening to yesterday.

from initial reports, the barriers were open. therefore the bus driver was given a green signal to go ahead..

I agree that perhaps he should have been more vigilnt when rossing ..

Such accidents happen when you put idiots behind the wheels and I mean behind the steering wheel of that bus which was carrying little children from school. Was he deaf and blind not to hear the train coming. People try and cut corners and take shortcuts and this results in such avoaidable tragedies

This is terrible.

To be honest, I'm surprised a similar incident (crash involving children) has not happened in Doha. Kids packed into small buses, traffic, terrible drivers and large trucks and SUVS driving dangerously are a recipe for disaster.

Devastating news indeed. Who's to be held responsible this time? Will those in authority at least now take necessary steps to better the railway system? Very very saddening really. So many kids killed and maimed...and not to mention the pain their parents will now endure...terrible!

May God grant paradise to all the lil ones killed, and give strength and cure to all the survivors.. Aameen!
