'Half of aircraft pilots fall asleep at the controls'

Please check the source...

What about half drunk and those having fun in the cockpits :(

CA, Takeoff is not done by Auto Pilot, its the PIC (Pilot in Command), who takes off the A/C, as its a Critical Phase of Flight, & when it comes to Landing, Yes A/C can Auto Land & even Flare considering the Airfield is Equipt with CAT IIIB ILS.

FYI, Autopilot is only activated after 2000 feet AGL...

and Good point canadian.

Pilots are just compliance officers to ensure to switch on and off auto pilot systems and act manually incase of hijacks ;D

The Most importantly to introduce themselves and welcome all the passsengers on board.

I believe technology has made the flight process automated from takeoff to landing.

the pilots are mainly there to reassure passengers, and in case something goes wrong, like if they accidentally spill booze on the auto pilot and it malfunctions.

By FlyingAce• 27 Nov 2012 12:41

Tah, During the Cruise Phase of the Flight, Pilots are Monitoring the Systems on the A/C, One of the Pilots would be on the Radios & the other one would be flying the A/C...

'Pilots at risk of losing jobs'

due to Automation in the passenger flights, the only option left for commercial pilots to join Air force now. At Least we will be safe.

This is what happens when you have all these fancy gadgets and flying aids. Do away with them and make the pilots earn their salary :o)

We already unmanned aircraft for surveillance and attacking purpose, probably unmanned aircraft for passengers soon?

By Victory_278692• 20 Nov 2012 14:29

Driverless cars are already on the US roads.

Soon no pilots would be required. Fully automatic version of Air planes loaded with Air navigation sattelite systems and airports map;

life would be better with no manual interventions.

..and all this time I thought that only Indian pilots were the ones who slept at the controls. Now it looks they are in good company.

Death is always looming around us all..how we are gonna die is pre decreed anyways. just gotta make most of our life and keep our limbs as safe as possible both from being harmed and harming others.

That said em pilots need stronger coffees!

The industry considers auto pilots are safer for take off, landings and cruising. But passengers feel safer with someone sitting (sleeping) in the cockpit.

Oh and the Pilot's Union (of course)

We have to keep trust and faith in God and then on co-pilots :D

tahsin: you say it does not happen with qatar and emirates..your proof/facts please

turbohampster: you say it does happen on qatar and emirates planes..your proof/facts too please

separately, you have a 1 in 5 chance of dying due to heart disease, 1 in 100 to a car crash and 1 in 20000 to an air crash..those are 2009 numbers and the safety record has only improved since then..with those numbers, those pilots can sleep all they want while i doze too in the back:-)
