Market for local farm produce opens today :

Qatar braces for another milestone as authorities plan to inaugurate today a special market for farm products — vegetables and fruits — produced in the country, in a significant step towards commercialisation of the sector.
Officials at the Ministry of Environment and Hassad Food said the initiative is aimed at catering to the marketing needs of growers producing edible items to meet the needs of Qatar’s population.
To be named Al-Mazrouah Farm, the market is designed to be a huge selling yard in the Umm Salal area off Al-Shamal Road, where growers would be able to bring their produce and sell it without the involvement of middlemen, a usual practice in the past.
Hassad Food — the official arm for the marketing of edible stuff — would co-ordinate with the Ministry of Environment for the project, being seen as lifeline for Qatar’s hitherto irregular farm sector.
The ministry on Monday announced the opening of the market, with hopes the project would help commercialise and institutionalise what currently is a ‘very expensive’ hobby for some wealthy individuals.
With food prices rising sky-high in the international market in recent years, Qatar’s latest venture is seen as an attempt to seek self-sufficiency in farm production to a great extent.
