Passport 6 months validity rule

Hi everyone,

When it comes to passports, some countries has a 6-month validity rule. It is in place so that if the un-expecting traveller needs to stay for a period of up to 6 months his/her passport would be valid to leave the country.

My passport is expiring in May 2014 and I'm travelling back to the Philippines this 1st week of March.

While my passport is still valid at the time of my travel to Manila, a Philippine embassy staff advised me to renew my passport here in Doha because I will not be allowed to leave.

I don't understand why I will be refused to exit when I'm going back to the Philippines with a still valid Philippine passport.

I don't want to renew my passport in the Philippine Embassy here in Doha because it takes a long time to process and cost a lot more. I want to renew my passport in Manila.

Is she right in saying I will be held or not be allowed to exit by immigration officer at Doha airport?

Sorry for this very late reply, I was too busy to login. But for the benefit of others who from now could get in the same situation, I would say I had no problems at all, cruised thru Qatar Airways check-in counter and the immigration (no questions), arrived in Manila, then renewed my passport the following working day. 20 days later, I'm back in Doha with my new and old passport (with the still valid Qatar visa). So yeah, we don't have to have a (at least) 6-month valid passport if we are coming home to the Philippines.

Thanks everyone. Wirehead, my only issue is returning to Phils, not leaving. I will renew my passport there the 1st working day after my arrival. Based on my experience in DFA Manila, renewal takes only 3 hours tops and I get my new passport in 1 week. Now, it should be much faster as there are more passport processing centers with the opening of their satellite offices (in Malls, how convenient is that?). So, I should have no problem leaving Phils.

That's complete rubbish! The six month rule only applies when you are entering a country of which you are not a national. You cannot be prevented from leaving for your own country as long as your passport is valid, even if you travelled on the last day of its validity. Your passport is proof of your nationality and your right to enter and reside in your own country. The embassy member if staff doesn't know what she's talking about.

they might allow you to leave doha, but the immigration officials in the philippines might not allow you to leave the philippines if your passport validity's less than six months.

i'm not entirely sure if it takes a lot longer to process here. i got mine in two weeks when i renewed and everything was faster. this is way better than wasting an entire day at the dfa. getting a passport renewed in the philippines takes a lot longer and you'd need to set up an appointment sometimes months ahead. yes it is more expensive here, but are you sure you want to go through hell at the dfa? seriously? but if you're leaving for good then by all means get your passport renewed in manila. or if you're eligible to avail of the courtesy lane.

one option for you would be to get an extension on the validity of your passport. it would be faster

Never heard of it being an issue when exiting the country to return to one's own.
