DOHA: The Pakistani embassy here will begin issuing machine-printed passports by the year-end, the country’s ambassador to Qatar, Mohamed Asghar Afridi, announced yesterday.

Addressing fellow nationals on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations at the mission premises, the envoy said the staff to manage the new and fully computerized system was being trained in Islamabad and will soon be here.

The system is already in place and overseas Pakistanis here can hope to get machine-printed and readable passports by the end of the current year. Talking of trade between his country and Qatar, the ambassador briefly said it rose 15 percent last year over 2007.
