Pakistan Telecom growing fast
In an exclusive interview with The News, [Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority] said the cell phone charges which are currently Rs 3 to Rs 5 per minute would come down to Rs 1.50 to Rs 2 per minute. The PTA chairman said that in the next two years, number of mobile connections would be enhanced from 5.5 million to 15 million, which were only 0.5 million before three years.
He said wireless local loop services, a modern technology best suited to the prevailing environment of Pakistan would be launched in the next year as a result of which tariff would be reduced for local and long distance calls in the country. Introduction of this new service, he added would create a healthy competition between the private and public sector telecom service providers…
The GSM Association, a global trade association representing more than 680 mobile operators, awarded Pakistan its prestigious Government Leadership Award-2006 on Monday. The congress was being attended by mobile industry CEOs and government ministers from across the world. Pakistan was chosen as the most progressive economy in establishing a thriving mobile communications sector in the past three years.
