Basic Arabic - Lesson 3 (Vowels)
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
If you could mention I still did not included some examples of Arabic words and we started merely on how to pronounce properly, how to write in stand alone form and today what the vowels looks like and how it will be uttered. By next lesson I might provide examples so you could start reading some basic Arabic words. There are short and long vowels in Arabic:
1. Short Vowels – they can be indicated by marks above and below letters.
1.1 Fatha – mark that found on top of letter and stands for vowel “a” (and is pronounced like a in hat).
1.2 Dammah - mark that found on top of letter and stands for vowel “u” (and is pronounced like u in pull).
1.3 Kasrah - mark that found bellow the letter and stands for vowel “i” (and is pronounced like i in tin)
Here is an example for the letter ba:
2. Long Vowels – they can be written or followed after the letters and pronounce longer than the short vowels. Take note that the letters alif, waw, and ya are used for this.
1.1 pronounced aa
1.2 pronounced uu
1.3 pronounced ii
Here is an example for the letter ra:
Next Lesson: How each letter is written at the beginning, middle, and end.
