Pacman to be president at 42 - Arum
MANILA, Philippines – "I tell you, Pacquiao will become the president of the Philippines when he reaches 42."
Top Rank promotions chief Bob Arum made the assertion on Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao's future in politics.
In an interview with Examiner.com, Arum relayed his wish to the boxing champion, saying that it is a part of his "metamorphosis" to become Philippine president.
"[H]e is 'a work in progress' conceivably learning the arts and wiles of politics and I believe he is going to be very successful in what he does and in what he will do as a politician, to the best of the Philippines," he said.
Arum added that he will be more than delighted if the "extremely intelligent" Sarangani congressman actually becomes President in 10 years .
"Having the lineage to live longer than a hundred years, I believe that will happen in my lifetime and I would humbly take that as my joy for the Philippines," he said.
After landing a seat in Congress in the last elections, Pacquiao has since been rumored to be aspiring for Malacañang next.
In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" last November, however, the "People's Champion" refused to comment on such possibility, saying that "it’s that far away."
Some legislators have also stated their opinion regarding the issue.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said last November that although he lauds Pacquiao's triumphs in boxing, he "doubts" if the boxer can really handle the job.
Dasmariñas City Rep. Elpidio Barzaga Jr., chairman of the House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms, said Pacquiao is too young and will have to wait for 12 more years before he is qualified to run for President.
Pacquiao is set to clash with American boxer "Sugar" Shane Mosley in May in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Arum said he will intensely promote the fight, even reportedly asking close friend, Senate Majority leader Harry Reid of the United States, to arrange a meeting between President Barrack Obama and Pacquiao.
Pacquiao endorsed Reid when the senator was running for re-election.
